I honestly had never seen a non-Brazilian drummer play samba like this guy. And I will tell you something, playing samba at this level is very difficult, even for good native professionals. It is not just about technique (exquisite, by the way), metrics, but pure musicality. This gentleman understood the whole thing.
How do you rate Tommy Igoe and Chuck Silverman? Do they play Samba the authentic way?
@@johnny6476 Honestly I don't know their work so I coudn’t give you a fair opinion. Instead, I would recommend you meeting (if you haven't already) another amazing American fellow who plays real samba: mr. Mark Walker. Killer drummer!

JH pulls out ALL the stops on this one! Incredible samba brush playing, ridiculous double push-pull (sooooo relaxed), hands soloing...not to mention instant switch brushes to sticks to hands to sticks. The cat has amazed me since I first saw him with Monty Alexander back in the 70s. Our university big band opened for them and Jeff played my psychedelic Camco blue moiré drums. He loved 'em so much he offered to buy them!
Rhythmatist indeed. this is what I would call a most concentrated dose of all the available techniques and means of expression, all packed in one performance. incredible. I'm going to quit.
I once read an interview where a guy said something like, "You know, I'm not crazy about drum solos, but I could listen to Buddy Rich drum all day long, by myself, in a dark room." I kind of feel that way about Jeff Hamilton. I'm not crazy about drum solos generally (and I'm a drummer), but Hamilton's feel is just unparalleled, and he's got such taste and style to go with his immense and effortless chops.
The difference between Jeff and Buddy is that Jeff plays drums solos that are actually a musical extension of the song, whereas Buddy plays the same flavor, intensity, and tempo no matter what musical piece is being performed. A Buddy Rich solo is basically a flash explosion that rarely has any relationship to the music being played. It's like a completely different record you can listen as an intermission in the actual piece of music, designed only to wow audiences with a fireworks display, then...back to the actual music, folks!
Yeah! That's because (just my opinion OK?) Jeff Hamilton's drumming is pure music. You feel that way, like his beat was almost a melodic instrument improvising. As for Buddy Rich… well, Buddy Rich was a force of nature, anything he did left us mesmerized.
How on earth 28 people dislike this man?

The solo is cool, loved the hand drumming, the samba comping is also amazing, how Jeff supports the melody and drives the rhythm from the snare drum comping. It’s almost like it’s both comping and part of the beat. And the beautiful changes in timbre throughout the song adds so much richness to the song.
