- People with bipolar disorder are four to six times more likely to die prematurely compared to those without a psychiatric disorder. (In comparison, smokers are two to three times more likely to have a shortened lifespan.) There are several contributing factors, including things like metabolic dysfunction, as well consequences of lifestyle choices influenced by disease burden Science needs to urgently investigate these extremely poor outcomes in search of more effective interventions that will enhance quality of life for people with bipolar disorder. Emerging evidence and clinical experience indicate that ketogenic and metabolic therapies may have a central role in addressing this concerning trend.
Dr. Bret Scher interviews Dr. Melvin McInnis, Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression at University of Michigan, on these pressing topics. Dr. McInnis is working on a pilot trial that will look at a “ketogenic mimicking diet,” augmenting a low carb diet with exogenous ketones in bipolar disorder. Could this address unwanted metabolic dysfunction in this population? We applaud Dr. McInnins and his team for asking the question.

Thank you for this episode! My mom graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, so I've had a soft spot for the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program for years - they have a great e-letter and it's the perfect time to sign up for news about the new study they're doing!
If you're interested in the ketogenic diet for bipolar, I invite you to watch our new podcast "Our Healing Journey with Metabolic Psychiatry" with co-hosts Dyane, a vegan, and Michael, an omnivore. We love using the ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder, and we just had the brilliant Dr. Georgia Ede as our 1st guest; our next guest is the amazing Dr. Erin L. Bellamy, founder of Integrative Ketogenic Research and Therapies!
Very interesting that the mere fact that the meds themselves add to metabolic malfunction.
I agree with the idea that keto should be used in favour of meds and patients should have access to a keto nutritionist.
Its an option that does not have the side efffects of sone of the heavily prescribed drugs..
Just cutting down on high processed carb seed oils is a place to start.
I'd like nothing more than for insurance to pay for everything.
When will people learn that insurance does t pay for anything. Policy holders do.
Excellent the more research the better - I think some patients would benefit a lot from cutting carbs down to 20 and then adding some supplemental ketones to bump things up a bit. But let's see what the research shows!
I appreciate your excellent explanations
Psychiatric drugs shorten/reduce lifespan. As far as why never medicated psychosis having shorter life spans if as much -remains a good question, though often more likely to recover from psychosis too if never medicated in first place.
I love those videos. Informations on point everytime. Thanks for sharing this, the world needs to learn about this type of content!
We would have it somewhat easier without Antipsychotics . Thanks!
Any studies on keto and PTSD?
We aren't aware of any published studies, but there was this one registered with clinicaltrials.gov that we hope to hear about soon. classic.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05415982
@@metabolicmindI’d actually like to partake in this study
Is anyone having problems with the volume for this video?
Read Georgia Ede's book if you can't cut out carbs. Cheap. No need to create a food consulting industry. The medical empire is the exact opposite of whst we need. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.". Love how he puts it in terms of "empowering people.". Well intended, inevitably bad results.
Genuine question - what magic spell does Ede's book cast that makes giving up carbs easier?
@@jasonharrison5765 she encourages a gradual transition to eliminating/reducing carbs. She argues there are different types of diets and it is not a one-size-fits-all. She addresses the issue subtly but clearly while not losing site of the goal.
RIP Supersize this Guy. Have a Milkshake and a Cheeseburger. Moratorium on self help isle for a while.
Greetings! Thank you so much for copying the concept of my video. 🤦♂️
What's that saying? Great minds think alike? I'm glad we are both covering this crucial topic. Would you like to join us on our channel to delve into it further?
Will ketosis enhance sleep? I was initially sleeping really well but now my insomnia has returned with a vengeance and worsened
Some people experience disrupted sleep when they transition into ketosis. Here's an article that may have some helpful information. perfectketo.com/keto-insomnia/
