Yeah honestly I’m sure it was a tough decision to choose for 2008 and 2009. The recession really changed things and Michael Jackson’s death was the only thing talked about for the rest of 2009. I know obama getting elected was very significant but when I was a kid, all everyone talked about in 2009 was Michael Jackson.

I’ll never forget the stock market crash of 2008. My dad lost his job of 21 years (1988-2009) & we lived off his unemployment & under-the-table construction work. It was the most depressing time of my childhood. I was born in 1993 & I was about to get my license. It was supposed to be a happy time of my life, but I was so so sad for my dad but we eventually got back on our feet. It took a couple years, but dad got back on his feet. But I’ll never ever forget that time in my life. We almost lost our home, but didn’t because dad was being paid under-the-table by his construction boss, who offered him that job out of pure pity. My dad was not one to break laws & work/get paid illegally (off the books) but desperate times called for desperate measures. It is still to this day the only time I can think of my dad breaking his moral code as an honest hardworking man.

The same could be said for many of the years.

I am also a Connecticut resident (born and raised here) and I lived in Newtown as a young kid 1994 -1996. My mother had just gotten divorced from my dad and was dating a man who had a daughter my same age. I only have one biological brother, so it was cool having a sister for that period of time. We lived together for a year and half, but we lost touch after our parents broke up. When the Sandy Hook tragedy happened (I went to the other elementary called Middlegate) I went on Facebook and found my "sister". We chatted for a while, and then decided that we should reunite and bring some good vibes/karma to Newtown. It was a wonderful reunion, and we both paid our respects and prayed for the children.

I remember every single one of these. One of personal note was 2008. I had JUST started working as a secretary for a financial advisor that June; a few months later I thought that I would have to look for another job, as we were a very small company (just my boss and me); but I watched in awe as my boss kept his cool and consoled our clients. While, yes, they lost some money, due to my boss' quick thinking they didn't lose as much as they could have. I still work for him, and I'll always remember that. Once, recently, it came up in conversation, and he confessed to me that he was scared spitless at the time!

My mom remembers my grandma frantically calling her from Mexico and asking if we were okay. Thankfully we were fine but you can see how much 9/11 still impacts New York and it’s people. Years later one of my moms bosses had a son who was a fire fighter working on 9/11 who had died because of the toxic dust. Today as a college student, I walk past the 9/11 memorial every time I go to school and there’s not a day where there’s not at least one person there. To this day we have a moment of silence every September 11th. I was only a baby when it happened but hearing all the stories from people around me really makes me feel what they went through. I also recently went to watch the Broadway show “Come From Away” which is based around 9/11 and it is beautiful, I definitely sobbed while watching it.

So in 06, we get a train bombing in Mumbai that kills over 200, a stampede during a festival in Mecca that kills well over 300, and the biggest breaking news is……Pluto being demoted? Pretty sure they just waited for the regular broadcast to announce that. (Also I grew up learning that there were nine planets in OUR solar system, but an unknown number of other planets outside of it.)

tbh it isnt the biggest news because of pluto, but because this changed astrological and space science for years to come!

This list should be called "biggest news of each year in USA".

This clip brings back memories. I was born in 1998 so I was just 4 when 9/11 happened. I remember my dad telling me that planes flew into buildings and getting mad at me when I said that was cool. I also remember the columbia space crash. That was the first time I learned about air friction with solid bodies .

You would’ve been 3 at most. Idek how you remember any of that since I was also born in 1998 and so were all my classmates and none of us remembered

@@tay2944 You do realize that scientifically 3 years of age is when on average people start building cognitive ability, correct? This has been proven by the American Physiological Association and Child Development Organization. Also, your memory must be pathetic. I know many people who could remember stuff when they were three, such as a 1959 Boomer remembering the JFK assassination. I'm born in 1992 and I can tell you that I have a 1998 sister who does remember 911.

As a Brit, I'd say this list is a bit too focused on American news. The 7/7 bombings in London in 2005 should really be up there, they're only not because this list is valuing American news more than anywhere else
