I agreed with my husband not to buy a TV when we got married 13 years ago. 4 kids later, we still don't hve one. Kids go weeks without watching anything. When they do, we watch a documentary or a fun educational show online together as a family. Even our homeschooling is 95% offline. They also play outside daily for hours at a time (rain or shine, just dress for the wather). They play in the rain, make mud sculptures, play with bugs, garden, bike, run, etc. This is the best way to live and we are better for it.

Your children are TRULY BLESSED to have you as their parent! This sounds like my childhood in the late 1960's. Every day was indeed filled with adventure and imagination! I wouldn't swap it for today's 'digital indoor' childhood that I see so many kids trapped in, for anything in the world.

    Read Fiction.
    Especially the Classics!
I have learned more about parenting and character from the classics than from personal development books.
There's something magical about watching fictional characters doing something good that motivates one to positive change, and equally impactful watching a character do wrong and feeling the disdain for such behavior motivates one to remain upright.

I always make it a point to always give a smile and a cheerful greeting because I want people to know I’m glad to see them. I do this on the phone at work as well. A coworker and a caller both expressed appreciation for that this past week. Also this week, a coworker I only know through email sent me a message just to say hi and that she enjoyed our cheerful email interactions in the past and wondered how I was doing!

  • @greg_216

One of the major ways I "buy" more experiences is by working fewer hours. The time that I'm not working is costing me lost income, so I really am buying that time, but that time is what allows me to have those experiences: taking off a nice day to go kayaking or biking, or taking a weekday trip to an amusement park, or taking a long weekend trip to visit friends out of state.
This can be very hard to do for folks who exist in an overworked corporate culture. For example, many Americans only get 2 weeks of paid vacation -- if anything at all -- and many also have budgets that are too stretched to take any unpaid time off. One of the things that minimalism helps with is cutting spending, and once you do that, options open up for working less.
Now, it can be a hard conversation to have with an employer because they're so unused to having it. But unpaid time off is not an unreasonable request and a good employer will grant that for a good employee. So, when you get to that point, why not ask your employer for another 2, 4, 6 weeks of unpaid time off each year? It's not for everyone, but it's one way to "buy more experiences" by buying back your time.

We don't have a TV, and most people look at us like we are crazy. My parents have 4 TV's in their home 🤦🤦🤦🤦. I love movies and TV shows, I worked in the film industry for almost 15 years and I don't think that people need to have a TV and hundreds of channels, there is so much bad TV out there 😜😜😜😜😜. Be intentional with what you watch. I like to read both fiction and nonfiction and I am a big fan of walking and listening to audiobooks, this morning after dropping my daughter off at school I went on a walk and listened to a book. I have also stopped making excuses to not go for my walk, rain, shine, cold weather, dress appropriately and just get outside.😊

Video games have been my favorite hobby nearly my entire life, so I’ll never give them up, but I also only play a few hours a week nowadays, and I only ever play games that make me feel relaxed and give me a good story.

I hadn't read much fiction, or novels-stories in my past. After something lite up inside me when he talked about reading fiction, I want to a local library, found a novel to "try" and ended up loving it! 💕📖
I was completely surprised by the change I could feel in me once I began., from the first day, a settling, and relief of some stress! I set my alarm to 30 minutes of reading, along with tea or coffee, and it was wonderful! It's like I could get away on a mini-vacation "escape" during that quiet "private" time, for myself.
Also his mentioning getting outside-I'll read outside if I can. I'm in an apartment, but there is a bench that I have been able to sit on to read.
❤❤📖📖Anyone not used to this, I highly recommend the reading a novel-fiction- for yourself, daily if possible. Once you start, I think you'll covet that time and experience, and want to it daily, or as often as you can. A couple days ago I stayed out for ~1.5 hours reading, which is something I've never done in my life before!

These suggestions will fulfill and combine the first three, and the second through fourth, if you like to read under the shade tree.
Reading is good, but fiction for me is like tv. If you homeschool, a biography or an autobiography are great teachers of history. Other beneficial reading, like Joshua's books, can be chosen according to your interests.
Exercise is on my list of rewards when I finish a task. Depending on time allowed and the weather, I want to step outside for air, take deep breaths, and either go for a walk or do an outdoor task with a time limit. Sweep or shovel the deck, the walk, and the driveway; or rake up a pile or two of leaves; weed a flowerbed or potted plant and water any or all of the plants. I have found that weeds are easier to pull out with their shallow roots if the soil is wet, so water first.

Yes, going on FB only twice a month has been refreshing. I rarely read non-fiction anymore. After 9-11, I switched to fiction to help me deal with my emotions.

I love smiling, I smile at people who walk by me but I realized they can’t see me smile because of the mask. 😂😂

Or take the mask off! It's not effective to ward off viruses but it is doing a great job of isolating us from each other. Take it off, smile at people, and let them see it!

I do not own a tv. Did not grow up with one. As a family, we had a tv, but only 1 for the house, a small one-- scary when people's heads are bigger than mine. Used rentals, CDs, and it was portable to go into a sick room. Tv went off with someone. Do stream and keep current on a small pad. 📺 📲
