    After having our DC (Corn Plant) for about 30 years, a few months ago my Wife decided to start watering it...without telling me! So when I saw the leaf tips and edges turning brown I commented to her. She said she had been watering it...alot! So now I'm in the process of trying to dry them out. These plants have lived for at least 30 years and have traveled with us through many States, Canada, and Alaska. I'm retired Military and we were stationed in Alaska for 4 years. We drove to Alaska back in 1996 from southern New Mexico and had to carry the "Mother" plant in our Van to keep it alive. Our heater was kicked loose in Canada when the night temp dropped to 27 below 0! I don't know when the heater went off inside the Van but it was super cold inside....but our Corn plant lived. And stills today! These plants can take a lot of abuse and still flourish. But not too much water........

      Mr51Caveman wow I’ve been searching on how to take care of mine my son gave it to me for Mother’s Day this year and since then the leafs have turned brown at the ends how often shon\ild I water this plant please and thanks any other tips let me know 😊

      @@universezero2590 I've found that the Corn plants seem to like indirect light. They will sometimes look not so great in the Wintertime but come back during Spring and Summer. A little organic fertilizer a couple times a year. For the first time after about 30 years I bought a moisture meter. It states the level for these type plants should be between 2 and 3. I think 2 is adequate. But without a meter a good watering about every week and a half, 10 days or so is good. Just make sure you have good drainage. (And dont let the soil get soaked and stay like that!) Hope this helps!

      Mr51Caveman that’s great thanks so much I’m wondering should I cut the entire leaf off or just cut the brown spots at the ends

    • @Mr51Caveman
      @Mr51Caveman 4 роки тому +2

      @@universezero2590 We usually just cut the tips. If the stalk is thick and healthy you could cut the entire leaf. Sometimes it's strange. Our plants will go on growing spurts producing really nice green leaf's. Leaves. Not sure which of those are correct! Maybe both? Idk. Anyway I have made several new plants from my "Mother" plant. At one time she was almost 7 ft tall and super bushy. We had to cut her down to fit in the Van for the trip from New Mexico to Alaska. Sometimes when I cut a stalk I just stick it in some soil and it will grow a whole new plant. We have "Mom" and another junior and both are about 4 ft tall now. They do like humidity. I have a Pothos (Sp?) that was my Wife's grandmothers when she was young. So guessing it's probably 50 or 60 years old and we have cut and made more juniors than I can count. It's also been around the world! Lots of people are now (hopefully) continuing that Plants linage. We have "Mom" and a junior of hers.

    Thank you alot for doing a video about this beautiful draceana, it's the nicest one in my opinion. I have mine now I think over 3 years. Sadly it didn't grow slot, more like so slow you can't see a difference. But I looks stunning always, because I bought as a big crown without a stem. The leaves are like 80 cm long, so I takes alot of space already. So, I would like it to grow faster, maybe I need change the position, and I will change the soil to a mix of non organic volcanic rock system with low self watering potential very airy. I hope that helps. But it's not that easy to change where it stands, because I don't have the space everywhere for it. Its to widely. But I do love it sooo much, it was my dream to get one without a stem but a big one. So I will take your tips and try something for my inviroment here.

      I absolutely love mine! It's 8 feet tall. Took about 3yrs only. It grows this incredibly beautiful white stemmed flower that smells up your entire house. It isn't too strong either, which is crazy. It's just perfect! Unfortunately, my daughter drowned it and I was able to save it, but it hasn't produced a flower yet. But that was less than a year ago, so we'll see. I'm highly suggesting them. I have a good 50-60 plants in my home. A decent amount of tropical trees. It's a bit of an obsession I suppose, but a good one🤷‍♀️

    I absolutely appreciate the info you’ve provided about the Dracaena Massangeana! One of my stems had two areas that had leaves and they each “died” off within a few weeks of each other. The leaves quickly turned yellow and brown and the part that connects to the stem became soft and basically broke right off. I’m afraid that stem has root rot now. Is there any way to salvage it and how? Can I do this without hurting the other two healthy stems? And should I do this immediately? It’s still winter here in Washington DC, but I’m afraid if I wait too long it’ll be too late.
    Thank you SO much for your help! So glad I came across your channel!

    Thanks for the overview on the Dracaena. I’m quite surprised that this is one of easiest plants to care for yet there are so many problems that can happen.
    I bought mine later in summer and have right always transplanted into bigger pot. Now I’m thinking this might not have been good choice since pot size much larger than old one. The plant is showing number of leaves turning yellow then brown. These don’t appear to be mechanical as in some cases they start near middle of leaf. I could attach pictures. I always now water plant from filtered pitcher to resolve chlorine and fluoride issue but not sure if filter taking 100% of chemicals away. At some point I have over watered the plant and that could have been the cause. Now I’m watering every two weeks.
    Do you think issue is water contamination or over watering? Perhaps I need to use bottled water going forward. Thanks for the help.

I repotted it as it had too much water. It has been with me for about 2 months now. I find that many of the leaves are turning yellow gradually. This is a gradual process but I can see at least 8 leaves turning yellow currently. Can you please suggest, what I should do. Thanks again

    Thank you for such a thorough video! This was great! I do have this plant at home. And I am worried about it. I’ve had her for one year and I recently repotted it in January and gave her potting mix from Miracle Grow. She sits by an east window behind a white curtain so her light is filtered. Lately she has been getting brown spots and the leaf tips are browning and I’m not sure if it’s the soil I used. I think I may have over watered. Is there anything I can do to save it? Just the tips are brown. Any help?

    • @danid6171
      @danid6171 4 роки тому +5

      Most potting mixes, including those from Miracle Grow, are quite dense so they hold on to moisture for too long. For all houseplants (except maybe moisture-loving ferns), it's best to always add an aerating ingredient (like perlite or pumice) to the potting mix to improve the drainage. If you re-pot it and include at least 25% perlite, you should notice that the pot dries out more quickly than before, which is healthier for the plant than sitting for weeks in soggy soil. During repotting, if you notice any soft black roots, rot may have started so these must be removed.
      In addition, you can try moving it to a brighter position (west or south) because east light is the lowest light level after north. More light means the plant will use more water, again reducing the time it is sitting in wet soil. Of course, if you choose a south-facing window, it is crucial to filter any direct light from touching the leaves.

      @@danid6171 Thank you so much for the reply! This helps very much. I can tell that the soil is a little too moist. I checked the roots and it is okay, but I will try and find perlite to helps with drainage for this plant. I didn't know that the East windows were the second lowest light, that's fascinating. I love this plant, so thank you for helping!

      As always, any pot with no drainage holes is a death trap for any plant. Unless it's a cashpot, just for show, with an interior pot for drainage. Cheers

    Hi I have a corn plant indoors. In one stem, there are 2 stalks that went limp recently but the leaves are healthy. Is this normal?

    Very informational. But one question I thought brown color was due to sun and yellow means too much watering? I just purchased one!

      If you can(weather), spritz the leaves with peroxide(over and under); and then hose it down with water, on shower setting(gentle). Pour cinnamon on the surface, and work it in about 1/4 inch to an inch; and add cinnamon on top of the soil for good measure. Worse case scenario, use diatomaceous earth. Cheers
