  • Here's another John Fahey song, from his album, Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death, which is called, the 101 Is A Hard Road to Travel. For the lesson, the song is split into its two halves. The first half plods along with its sequence of somewhat challenging chords (when it comes to fretting), while the second half is the polar opposite, with only double-stop chords, but faster-paced picking patterns.

Well, I appreciate you doing this particular piece. Your method of instruction is helpful. That whole album of his is wonderful. Been listening to it since about 1970 and have gradually learned several of my favorites from it. While I hate barres, I'm sure gonna dig into it.

A commenter pointed out a crucial yet overlooked way of playing this song. It’s noted that Fahey likely plays the initial piece in open-C positioning, but using a capo to play it, and then uses audio editing to make the time-gap between both parts (which this assumes were recorded separately) less noticeable. That would certainly help reduce the amount of barres necessary, making it more accessible from a playability standpoint more generally also

For part 1, couldn't you just capo 2d fret and play it in C shapes? It's a lot easier that way. If you're doing it so you can play it live together with part 2 in the right key, it makes sense, but I wouldn't be surprised if Fahey just recorded the 2 parts separately. What do you think?
