    Log, you might be the best guitar teacher on earth. I've been playing for 25 years. Have had a handful of teachers. Have watched countless hours of instructional videos. I have had the privilege of going to clinics hosted by the absolute greats like Guthrie Govan, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons but no one delivers these concepts in the concise way that you do. I ran into your power up 21 videos over the summer and now it's my daily warm up. You have given new life to the way I approach theory on this instrument that I love so much. Thank you.

      There aren’t many people who both play and teach at that level. Guthrie Trapp from Artistworks is close, but he’s more general in his explanations and heavier on the inspirational examples. Definitely less breakdown and explanation of theory.

    Really spoke to me when you mentioned people that come back to understand the basics 20 years later. I've always been involved with music, but never started to understand theory until about 2 years ago in my 30s.

    I learned this by memorizing a chart showing all the keys and the 1-7 chords for each key. However, there’s a lot of people that have issues with numbers.
    I like the CAGED system for chord shapes and learning scales. It makes so much more sense and compartmentalizes with patterns the scale forms with a logical foundation

    Thanks for refreshing my memory about the "Chord Shapes" on strings 5-4-2 being exactly the same as the "Chord Shapes" on strings 4-3-1. (Immediately picks up guitar and enjoys playing through various scales with 3 note chord shapes. Having too much fun!) Expanding on your idea - the "Power Chord Shapes" on strings 5-4 & 4-3 are exactly the same - the "Sixth Interval Shapes" on strings 4-2 & 3-1 are exactly the same! Thanks again for your Insightful Guitar Fingerboard Lesson.

      It is a shame that it's such a common mentally in the guitar world. I have met so many players who have been playing for decades that have a lesson with me and immediately regret not learning it in their early years.
      It's literally the answer to all of the sounds they want, but from the way it's generally taught (especially with the needlessly complex terminology) so many people avoid it early on.

    I must agree with the TERRIBLE MISTAKE of not focussing on this lesson which caused me personally a lifetime (56yrs) of confidence destroying confusion and waste of potential.
    (I am now 68 yrs old and have been "playing" since age 12 "self taught" )
    I never understood or focussed on these foundational principles that I'm learning right now in this lesson despite years watching many videos and learning songs by ear.
    This is a huge breakthrough for me and I see I must work this material until it is my nature (mind and muscle memory) to think and play accordingly.
    Thank you so much for your message to me today directing me to this lesson (and the diminished lesson originally).
    Such a talented player and teacher regardless of any student's years played at any level.
    God bless you!
    Your humble student, AS🙏🙌🫶🫶

I'm dead set on knowing where all the notes are before learning songs. This lesson is perfect for me now. I know all the major and minor triad shapes and major/minor pentatonic scales. Honestly dude, learning songs can be extremely useful if you learn a handful of tunes while learning theory. Generally this stuff comes second, but there’s no right or wrong. Just saying, learning songs brings a plethora of basic skill and knowledge to the table. Timing, feel, groove… the music!

    • @LoGsounds
      @LoGsounds  Рік тому +2

      This is honestly the way. The absolute best thing you can do is learn all of the tools to the point where you are relatively comfortable at popping them down on the fretboard, and then immediately start noticing them in songs. This transforms the tools into actual moves and tactics you can use in actual playing. The biggest problem I experience is people doing too much of one and not enough of the other, so too much theory study without enough practical use, or too much practical use (aka learning songs) and not enough study. Basically how it is in every art form, you can learn all the tools you want but they're nothing until you use them in practice. You can learn a particular move in a martial art, but it's nothing until you spar with someone. Or you can learn the exact proportions for ingredients when you're making a cake, but it's nothing until you actually sit down and make the cake.

    • @stevenmonte7397

      @@krill684 I get that now. What I am finding is that knowing theory helps me see the fretboard better and makes learning songs much faster. Last August, I didn’t even know the names of the strings. As I balance out learning with practice, it’s getting better.

      @@LoGsounds As I learn the guitar, my goal is to uncover the songs (like your PBE lessons on Patreon). I really understand the role learning songs plays in becoming better. There really IS a method to my madness. On my journey, I feel I’m just starting to get it. Mixing theory with songs is making it so much easier to remember songs. I know I have a long way to go. Like I said, I’m just 10-11 months into this. (Now back to your PBE lessons on the E string. I’m on the second lesson now.)

    AH-HA! It's "Low Gee" I didn't think it was LOG, like "Ren & Stimpy's - *ANATOMICALLY CORRECT LOG*... HAHAHA. I didn't remember hearing that in your Shorts Videos.
    Love your attention to detail and, clear and concise description of your lesson subject matter. That was always something that I paid special attention to with my students. Explaining exactly what needed to be conveyed, without over-explaining or giving off-topic and/or too much information that was not necessary at the time and ultimately overwhelmed, confused and/or frustrated students.
    You are one of my favorite guitar UA-camrs and I have recommended you to all of my old students. I think my favorite thing is that you take an approach like I do to playing with an emphasis on knowing what, when, where, why, how music theory works for you and once you have a practical innerstanding of how the chords of a key are built off of/within the scale, how the patterns fit together, the way the chords work in relation to each other and how you can make them more interesting by coloring them with neighboring notes(inside or outside of the scale), passing tones, transitioning between chords emphasizing common notes, chord voicings and scale/mode runs... I've watched all of your shorts and I think that you have the best practical application content on YT.
    I just wanted to thank you and encourage you to keep up the phenomenal work!!!
    It's rare, but you've reminded me of things that I had learned a long time ago and hadn't thought about exactly in that same way in years. And you've even made me see things in ways that unlocked more creativity within my playing that has inspired me to break out of some of the patterns that I had gotten comfortable in and needed to break out of my comfort zone.
    I love it & truly appreciate your work!!!
    Thank you my brother

      Haha yep, Low-Gee. It's a play on my last name that my drummer came up with.
      Glad you enjoy the content, my goal is to present all the information as simply as possible, because it is actually very simple. Somewhere down the line musicians decided to make all of these musical concepts way more convoluted and technical sounding than they should be, therefore many musicians get stuck in the intermediate stage because they don't know how to interpret all of the needless terminology. At the end of the day it's just notes and chords and how they work on top of each other, and how you want to play them rhythmically. Thanks again for watching!

    Yes, I have made this “catastrophic mistake” for many years and while it is easy to fool people with a flashy riff that I memorized, I always shy away from playing in bands or public settings because it won’t take long for people to realize I don’t know what I’m doing. I have heard people say they don’t need music
    theory but I disagree. Very good point to illustrate.

    • @LoGsounds
      @LoGsounds  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment.
      The problem with people saying they don't need music theory is while they're saying that, they are actively using widely established theory concepts every moment in their playing. This type of person will simply think they are "playing what they feel, or playing with emotion", when what they're really doing is playing a mixture of sounds that they've heard before which are definitively rooted in basic concepts. They're just choosing to not understand why the sounds they are playing sound the way they do, and why they are being used in the way they are.
      It would be like a chef choosing to not learn why certain ingredients work the way they do because they think it will taint their "creativity". When in reality, actually understanding why everything works the way it does is the best way to expand your creativity.

      @@LoGsounds That’s true. I totally agree. I love analogies; I liken it to driving around aimlessly in a car while ignoring the GPS. You might eventually get where you’re going but it’s doubtful. Music “Theory” is the map. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s helping a lot of people free the songs trapped in their heads.

    I worked on playing guitar all my life, got serious during COVID and Tomos lesson on this, playing the scale on one string changed everything lol. At first I was like why is he doing that ! Also playing melodies on one string ? I used to think it was wrong to practice that way oh well largely self taught, thank you !

    • @fattyz1
      @fattyz1 7 місяців тому

      Wait there’s more ! The most important video I ever seen except for tomos video on singing the major scale out loud. I thought he was kidding. Most important thing you can possibly see is the thing that meets you where you’re at. This is how to transition between scales and chords and hearing things with your ear in my opinion. Just getting to where you can understand there’s a difference is so difficult. Matters is not knowing that c is the one and D or whatever it is is the two, it’s being able to hear it.
      Thank you so much again and again.

    This humbled me to not be so eager to attack more complicated musical concepts that I end up over looking what is right in front of me. What I also got from this was how to start creating pedal point exercises. Thanks!

    • @LoGsounds
      @LoGsounds  Рік тому

      Thanks I appreciate this comment! It's such a common thing for people to jump right to the "complicated" or "flashy" stuff (me when I was younger), while skipping the core fundamentals. However, skipping the core fundamentals is actually why something can look complicated in the first place.
      In reality, if you have the core structures of music down solid, nothing is necessarily complicated. Things can be faster or flashier, or maybe using sounds that are less common, but nothing will be necessarily more complicated or harder to comprehend.
      Cmaj9 shouldn't be harder to comprehend than a plain C Maj chord, it's just more notes. However if you don't understand how music works, it's very easy to look at one of those chords as harder to understand than the other.

    • @nuke97
      @nuke97 Рік тому

      @@LoGsounds Yes , its true that its very common for most to do that. Its tough getting a point across in text for me. I know theory but when it comes to the subject of chord melody I have chased the concept by purchasing numerous books that end up making the subject so complicated plus the wording tends to be so bland it felt hopeless. You come along and provided something so to the point it made me equally upset as it made me happy lol. Why didn't I think of this before when I know the theory??
      What I meant before is that some how I end up taking a complicated route thinking it's the correct text book way to learn a concept but sometimes the answers can be right in front of you, plus a little imagination goes a long way musically.
      Either way I'm grateful and humbled.

    Hi ! the part "Expand on It" is very instructive. I used to consider the melody note as the tonic of the chord. But it can be the 3rd or the 5th or any note from any matching chord. This will be a good food for though for me and another way to harmonizing melody.
    Thanks !

    • @LoGsounds
      @LoGsounds  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! If it helps, always think of vocal melodies as your reference, they are always a mixture of notes and rarely just the root (tonic) of the chord.

    Amazing lesson. I learned the Nashville numbering system going to bluegrass jams. It's required knowledge in that sort of thing. However, your application of chord melody and modulating of the chords is something I'm going to work on. Thanks.

    • @LoGsounds
      @LoGsounds  2 роки тому +5

      It's interesting that it's known as the Nashville number system. Literally all musical scenarios that I've been in (many of them not country or in Nashville) speak like this, as well as in college for classical guitar.
      The Nashville players of course have their own way of charting using the numbers in a specific way, but using numbers in general is a universal thing that really everyone in the professional world uses. Thanks for watching!
