  • No Edits Deluge Session
Today I wanted to show you how I typically use the Deluge to sketch out song ideas. I figured the best way to do this was to not make any edits in the video, demonstrating everything in real time. While this approach to a video was a little more nerve-wracking and frustrating than I originally anticipated, I feel like it shows a very real slice of the creating process, and hopefully might help others set appropriate expectations when working with gear! Enjoy the video :)

im a drummer myself and we think very very very similar when it comes to music making involving rhythms. one of the reasons i enjoy this channel so much, id like to find someone to jam with in person with these. I feel like 2 or more on MPCs and groove boxes could be epic.

That's the thing about having so many pieces of gear, it's hard to learn them all haha (I have the same problem). Deluge is one of my favs, I'm currently building a live set on it so I'm finally getting to learn it a lot better.

Yeah haha, the Deluge requires a LOT of time to memorize everything. Luckily just using it for sketching is relatively simple!

@@FreeBeat the majority of the shortcuts are written on the panel so it's not bad at all. One of those Overlay things could definitely help you.

The Deluge as a whole is probably not to be stored inside 1 human head 😅. I don’t know the looper, for instance, it is incredibly confusing to me with the red and purple modes. But the synth and the sequencer are burned in my muscle memory. Recently I have sampled sounds from my Minifreak directly on the Deluge, and the best resource for how to sample is YOUR tutorial so if you want to sample instruments into it I highly recommend to go watch your own video!

Hahaha that's so funny, I've come back to that video several times to learn from myself! I'm glad to know that there's still parts of the Deluge that you don't understand, you always seem to have just the info I'm looking for lol.

Ha, I had to remember where to find the arp option last night too. It's fast to work with once you have the muscle memory, but it can be a pain to search for everything.

Yeah absolutely haha. I felt so silly looking for the arp, in the back of my head I knew it had a full section, I just couldn't see it for the life of me haha.

Nice concept. Yeah i have the same problem with too many gear haha. That's why i started to write it down in a book.

Love the deluge, but it's really hard to remember everything. I ordered a panel from Oversynth to help, but I think that unless I spend 10+ hours a week on it (which I don't) I will just forget 90%. 🤷‍♂

Honestly the Play doesn't excite me too much. I'm much more of a compositional musician, and the play seems to be a lot more generative. I do plan on trying it some day!

Also for percussion kits check if the sample playback is Loop, Cut, or Once. Once ignores the envelope Release and plays the sample in its entirety every time it's triggered.

It's an incredibly complex and intricate piece of gear. The basic jamming functions are fairly simple, but there is a lot more it can do if you're willing to dive deep!

It is a deep dive; I’ve got the new version with the OLED screen though and, having that showing more clearly what is happening is much better than the old screen. I have the sense that, though it’s a steep learning curve, the power you can unleash with it is all worth the commitment.
