- The S&W model 12 is the alloy frame version of the model 10 Military & Police revolver. Chambered for 38 Special. They were made with either a 2 inch or 4 inch barrel in blue or nickel finish. This one is blue with a 2 inch barrel.
Shout out for The Glock Brothers.

Man oh man have I developed a sweet spot for older smith & wessons having made the decision to aquire myself a 12-2 after watching your video. She's got a bit of Holster wear after being used as a service weapon for a retired Houston detective, other than that it's still a beautiful piece with a ton of life left in it and will make a great addition to my collection of smiths as they certainly don't make em like they use to
Local shop has another one just like this one except in nickel. So far I`ve resisted. :-)
I bought one for a month ago. Had it to the range. I love it. It's awesome little revolver with enormous potential.
My revolver has Swedish army mark. It has been used by Swedish airforce pilots.
You should do a video with it sometime.
I've learned a lot about old guns from watching your videos over the years Shep! Appreciate you sharing all your videos and knowledge!
Thanks.
Ditto ..shep is a fav of mine, always consistently interesting and knowledgable,,..
Always thought the Model 12 was a pretty cool idea, thanks for sharing yours! It's great to see you uploading again.
Now that I`m retired I have time for UA-cam again.
I've never had or fired one of the "light weight" Smith & Wesson's. The only "snubby" I have is a Model 15-2 I've had for a while. Thanks for the video, Shep! It's always nice to see a Smith & Wesson !
The 15 snubs are awesome! I have a dash 3.
Thanks.
The Model 12 is gradually moving up in collectability. Some variants are showing up online on various auction sites pushing $1000. Must be a desirable gun, especially the nickel ones.
All the older S&Ws are going up in price. But don`t pay too much attention to the asking prices on site like gunbroker. Look at the auctions where they have actually sold instead of just being offered. That gives a much better picture of the true current value. Collectible guns are like anything else collectible. They are worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay. Not what Blue Book claims (which is often low) or what the seller is asking (which is often high).
That’s a fine looking revolver! And you’re right, you don’t see those often.
I`ve never seen but 3 of them.
I always have an eye out for a model 12 snub. I haven’t seen a square butt model 12, they’re usually round butt in a snub. Thanks for sharing, sir.
They made both square and round butt. Same on the model 10.
Nice gun, Smith & Wesson should start making this gun again.
Thanks
You and that Model 12 were really in sync, Shep! Good shooting! I wish Model 12's were more common, I think one would be a good handgun for an aunt of mine that is looking to get a revolver, but wants a light weight one.
The model 12 is not very common. Unless you got really lucky and ran across one at a gun show, you would probably have to resort to buying one online at gunbroker.com.
If she wouldn`t mind a smaller gun, the model 37 and 637 are a lot easier to find.
@@1957Shep I don't know if she's really serious about getting one, though I wish she would. The one she has looked at getting the most is a new 642. But with the virus & now the ammo shortage she kind of put it on the back burner.
I have one that's a dash 2 Circa was 1963-65 in 98% condition who ever owned it probably kept it in a safe. I absolutely love it, it came with the box with all the original paper work. I have shot it , and do carry it every so often in an Azula owb leather holster. I forgot to mention it does have the flat latch which is pretty neat being that it's the only flat latch s&w i own. I really enjoy it, what a great piece of Americana with such great history 🇺🇸
You should do a video with it sometime.
Neat little snubnose. Thanks for sharing your firearms with us.
Thanks.
That's a cool older smith , been trying to go to a local gun shop that usually gets in some older smith's.They only letting 2 people in the store at one time , and they busy on weekends and I'm busy through the week. I've purchased a model 15-2 4 inch and a model 38-2 that I use for summer carry at times. Another shop has a model 60 no dash with box and everything but they want $600
$600 might be a bit high for a nice model 60 right now. But in a couple of years it probably won`t be. Prices keep going up on Smiths and Colts with no end in sight. Used to be just the N Frame Smiths and the Colt Pythons & Diamondbacks that were going up in price so much. But now it`s just about anything made before 1990 (and especially anything made before 1980) that says S&W or Colt on it. Even really nice model 10 S&Ws go for $500 Plus and a beater model 10 will go for almost $300.
@@1957Shep saw on armslist guy about 45 miles away has a decent model 36 for $330 and a model 66-2 think he saying it 2 3/4 or 3 inch barrel for $700. All our gun shows have been canceled so far since early march and the next one is coming in September unless it gets canceled also . Thanks for the videos have a good day
Try offering $550 cash. Never hurts to make the offer.
@@3ducs I had been waiting for a local gun show , last year a older gentleman had 4 older smith's in orginal boxes at decent prices, different barrel lengths and finish. But at the time I was looking for something else , and a week before this yeas show everything got canceled and locked down.
I like this revolver..
Thanks.
So my parents got this as a gift for my first handgun! Definitely has some recoil, I was really just looking for something I can carry and I'm not yet set on this. Great for my bedside though!
Putting rubber grips on it would help with the felt recoil a little. But you can`t cheat basic physics. A heavier gun will soak up more of the recoil, but that will also make it harder to carry. Everything is a trade off.
Nice video. It’s on my radar. Thank you.
Thanks for taking time to watch.
My wife has one with a round butt. It's her cold weather EDC. She carries it in a vintage Jacksss (pre-Galco) shoulder holster.
They are nice little revolvers.
Thanks Unc ! Needed this vid joe
Thanks for taking time to watch.
classic, simple, best quality n performance, beauty .. but more gentle when quick draw .. familiar in asian hand that i love it .. 👍😁
Thanks for watching.
I was offered a nice one like yours recently but passed, I spent so much in shops last year I need to pay my bills down. Sorta wish I'd gotten it though...
That one is very nice!
It`s important to get out of debt. Once you are debt free, you won`t have to pass up so many good offers.
@@1957Shep All my debt is from NOT passing up on good offers! And some not so good offers on guns I just had to have...
It sure looks like New, Nice job on the video even in the heat 🙂👍
Bought it at an auction a few years ago. More than 40 years old and I doubt it had a full box of shells fired through it. And I don`t think I`ve put 100 rounds through it since I got it.
I don't know why Smith & Wesson is wasting their time reintroducing obscure guns like the Model 14 and such when they could reintroduce this. These 2 inch K frames really are a sweet spot, being large enough to handle but small enough to conceal easily. The Model 12 is almost as light as the small five-shooters.
Probably just as well that they didn`t. The S&W repro guns were kind of a let down. The dull finish almost looks like someone coated them in soot. The grips are wood, but they look more like some kind of plastic. Saw one of the new model 29s up at Skunk River Arms last week. Wasn`t impressed at all.
@@1957Shep What do you think of the Model 19 classic? Gun Blue 490 sure sung their praises.
It's a very nice weapon I have one myself in 4 in
You should do a video with it sometime.
You shot it well... Another enjoyable video....
Thanks.
I bought one a few years ago. Ended up selling it, wish I'd kept it.
That`s why I never sell or trade anymore. Always end up regretting it.
Nice collection
Thank you
Are the cylinder and barrel made of steel and the frame alloy? I can't believe I've never heard of these! I love my S&W 642 and my 2" S&W 10. I'm on the hunt for one now.
Only the frame is alloy. The cylinder is steel. Back in the 50s they made something similar for the US Air Force that had an alloy cylinder and frame called the Air Crewman. But those proved to be not very durable and even a little dangerous. Very few of those still exist as most were destroyed by S&W or the Air Force.
The model 12 with the steel cylinder are safe and durable, but they were not intended for +P ammo. Since this video was made I have added another one to the collection. Same as this one, but with nickel finish.
The model 12 is not nearly as common as the basic model 10 Military & Police, but not that hard to find. You have probably seen them in gun shops or gun shows and just assumed they were model 10s.
They look exactly the same except that the finish will be kind of dull on that alloy frame. You will only notice the difference when you pick it up and see how much lighter weight it is.
Lion Quest fitness would love this revolver!👍🏾😀❤️🇺🇸
Guess I don`t understand the reference. But thanks for taking the time to watch.
@1957Shep He's a fella on utube that reviews nothing but revolvers, look him up really nice guy
3:36 "there we go !" I read the model stamp as 12-3, which is more desirable. The -1 and -2 frames were thinner frames than the standard K frame specs in the other guns. Smith remedied this dimensional oversight with the -3 change.
It is a dash 2
@@1957Shep Shep, with respect I'm not busting balls you're a good guy and you have the actual revolver but in the video at frame 3:36 it sure looks like a 12dash3. ! Maybe one of your buddies could give it a look, I think the -3 s are more valuable and useful. S%W corrected the undersized frame dimensions of the -1-2 s for parts compatibility with all the other K s.. Wonderful guns. Happy Mothers day tomorrow.
@@richardkluesek4301 Yes his is very clearly a dash 3
It's clearly a -3 on the frame, but the -3 also used the narrow frame. And it wasn't an "oversight", it was S&W trying to go for maximum weight reduction. S&W didn't go to standard K-frame dimensions until the -4.(1984).
Nice six gun, Shep :-). Does the alloy hold up okay with dissimilar metals and the recoil forces?
It should, as long as you stay away from high pressure loads. None of the older K Frames were intended for Plus P ammo.
Its a shame that S&W only offer airweight j frames today and no k frames.
The old S&Ws are better quality than what they make today anyway.
@@1957Shep Maybe gut the model 12 is not +p rated. Also the frame is slimmer so you cant get other grips for them.
I really like this gun.. How i can buy this gun..
If you can`t find one locally, there are almost always a few for sale on gunbroker.com
I prefer a 6 inch for shooting, and if it was legal to carry a 4 inch for carry, because it's faster to draw and lighter
Something to like about all of them. And barrel length comes mostly down to personal preference.
Does anyone know if this the smallest six shot .38 spl that S&W ever made ?
The K Frame 38s like the model 10, 12, and 64 are the smallest common 6 shot revolvers S&W made. The model 73 built on the C Frame was smaller (about the same frame size as a Colt Detective Special) but those are exceptionally rare. All but a very few model 73s were destroyed by the factory after they failed testing by S&W.
Any idea where I can find a center pin for one
?
+p
No. Don`t use +P ammo.
