Join me, a self proclaimed Portnoy Fanboy, as I dive head first into the Mangini Era of Dreamt Theater. While I do thoroughly enjoy the first two albums with Mangini... Portnoy IS King!!! I've always felt that Mangini was just too damn mechanical. Especially combined with Petrucci's ultra metronomic approach. It just seemed to suck the life out of the music for me. So, I am taking this time to dig into the Mangini Era and try to entertain a new perspective.

Enigma Machine and Breaking all Illusions are my favorite songs from the Mangini era. Including Illumination Theory and Pale Blue Dot.
Enigma Machine absolutely kicks ASS!! I’m SO looking forward to getting back to self titled. I think Jordan’s instrumental section in Illumination Theory might just be the absolute most beautiful piece of music ever recorded. It literally brings tears to my eyes.

There´s a little bit of a myth on the drum parts for this album. Petrucci actually programmed midi drums for MM to follow, but it is not like John Petrucci himself sat down and programmed each dot of the trillions required to replicate the drumming on this album. It was just a guide for, you know, where the double kicks should go, where are the half/double time parts, etc.
That seems viable. Thank you for your comment. Please Like, Subscribe, and hit the Notification’s Bell if you haven’t already!!
ADTOE is one of my fav mangini albums even tho there’s not a lot. Outcry is definitely one to look at if you haven’t already 🗣️
I’ve listened to all of ADTOE and Self Titled quite a lot and really do enjoy them both. I’ll be doing every song on every album. Thank you for your comment. Please Like, Subscribe, and hit the Notification’s Bell if you haven’t already.
The entire audition series was filmed to justify the choice of Mangini. But those series actually only left a doubt on my mind: What if one of the more improvisational guys like Virgil Donati or Thomas Mann were picked, or one with a more relaxed and fun attitude when playing such as Marco Minneman... how would they act with little room for freedom given to Mangini? Both musically and personally, how would they react and what would be the result?
How can you say the entire audition was filmed to justify their choice? The decision to film the audition was obviously made before they chose Mangini. I’d say that they filmed the auditions to be able to share the entire experience with the fans.
I’d like to have seen Thomas Lang write a song with DT. That could be cool! Then again, it would be cool to see with any of the other guys as well.

It's all taste, isn't it? I don't think there's any doubt that Mangini is a much better technician than Portnoy. It's really a question of whose feel you like more. Personally, I find Dream Theatre so clinical in general that I don't think it makes much difference. As a drummer, I'd rather listen to Mangini.

I think the reason this album feels great is because Images and Words was the primary influence. All the songs are structured exactly like their counterpart on I&W. Break down the songs by sections. The correlation is irrefutable.
Hmm… perhaps I should do a video on that exact topic?!? That would be an interesting dive. I’ll keep that in mind as I complete the rest of this album. Thank you for your comment. Please Like, Subscribe, and hit the Notification’s Bell if you haven’t already!!
They did not Mangini express himself until selftitled. And did not let him be a part of the writing process until DoT which is DT's best album from Mangini era IMO

The robot/mechanical thing is not only humorous but also getting old. Mangini's technical skill, and precision, is beyond anything we can imagine. Doesn't matter that Mangini didn't write any of the parts on Turn Of Events. He still constructed the notes. That is writing. Common sense. However, there's no doubt that it was a critical transition for the band after the mess Portnoy left. Dreamtheater took a step backwards by firing Mangini for Portnoy. I give Portnoy a year and they'll be right back where they were thirteen years ago. The same boring has been BS he was putting out. I hope that Portnoy never attempts to reproduce anything Mangini recorded. I'm going to miss Mangini's solos and the experience of watching the best drummer in the history of music. Thank you Mangini for thirteen excellent years. He made this band better, and it's a shame he's gone. Hopefully to bigger and better things.
