  • The Chrysler Building, designed by William Van Alen and completed in 1930, is an iconic Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, originally commissioned by Walter P. Chrysler as the headquarters for his automobile company. Standing at 1,046 feet, it was briefly the world's tallest building, known for its distinctive stainless steel spire inspired by Chrysler radiator caps. The building housed the Cloud Club, an exclusive dining club for the city's elite, on its 66th to 68th floors, which operated from 1930 until its closure in 1979. The Chrysler Building remains a symbol of 20th-century modernity and architectural innovation.

@@The-Friendly-Grizzly Amen, the buildings built today are horrific, bland glass boxes with random metal panels or even more gimmicky buildings that have weird designs for the sake of trying super hard to be "innovative" (different). The architecture profession is an embarrassment.

@@jonw999999 Don't bring up architects. I am retired from lighting energy conservation survey work. Architects are very good for putting lighting in places where you rent $1200 in scaffolding and erection thereof, then pay an IBEW man well over n hour of labor to change $30 worth of lamps ("bulbs"), or make it so that lamp ("bulb") replacement is in fact next to impossible because there is NO access.

If you like Art Deco, you might want to try watching a play through of “nobody wants to dye.” it almost seems like an exposé on architecture with a narrative, like Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame was for Gothic architecture.

I was fortunate to work in the Chrysler when they were finishing the new Cloud Club. A contractor brought us up to see it. I could stand next to the Eagles too. We weren't allowed to take pictures as the marketing group wanted to be the first to publish any pictures. I can tell you it is stunning. The lobby and elevators are exquisite and should be seen in person to be appreciated. Thanks.

From what I've heard, pictures were not allowed there. The only pictures I've seen were from either a construction worker or appraiser that was looking at the building when it was for sale I believe in the 80's. They managed to sneak a few pics of both the club and Walter Chrysler's personal penthouse at the very top. They're online somewhere. From what I remember, both areas were very ornate with copious amounts of dark wood, either natural walnut or stained oak. Both areas had been mothballed for a while so they didn't look lived in.

Main reason behind the market collapse was that as a result of the Fed increasing interest rates (the Fed should never have kept interest rates low to being with) and the stock margin loans were called by the banks. The specs had two choices: post more margin or liquidate. Margin clerks began liquidating accounts that did not post more margin. That is a margin call. Today computers do that work and there are no longer any margin clerks. And computers move a lot faster than humans.

The Chrysler building could be converted into a mixed use structure, with office space on the lower tiers, and hotel & residence spaces in the main tower. Each floor in the main tower could be split into up to 4 good sized residences, or several smaller hotel suites. I am a preservationist, but I do feel that it is time to move these grand old buildings into the modern era & give them new life for decades to come.

If the current owners were smart they'd lean into the buildings elite design and historical prominence by reopening the lucrative skydeck but with limited occupancy and higher prices since newer and taller decks would always win over this older and shorter one for all but a few history buffs... They should also convert the smaller upper floors to hotel and condo units because the market for those types of small but expensive micro apartments would probably strike a chord with owner/investors... I know I'd love to sip a cocktail from the top of that building one day...

Recent newspaper articles discuss the Chrysler's fall onto hard times, parts of it badly decayed and abandoned.
And there's no public "Cloud Club" dining and event venue ever mentioned in the press.
Its second iteration must have closed long ago. (Otherwise I'd make it a point to visit.)
