This is one of the reasons why my next TV will be a monitor. No more smart TVs. You can easily put a dongle.

    • @masejoer
      @masejoer 2 роки тому +82

Yep, that's how I've essentially used "tv" since the late 90's - (ht)pc (or dvr functionality like sagetv), consoles etc hooked to tv. For the most part firmware updates are also unnecessary - I'd imagine most of these "ads" won't display without being connected to the internet, which is unnecessary for a monitor.
Give me a good display (low input lag, ghosting, contrast, DC or high-pwm rate dimming, etc), and I can do the rest myself. Hoping for a reasonable basic display if/when we get microLED in affordable sizes and prices.
Samsung service menu (accessible from old remotes, or IR-blasters on phones) "may" be able to disable this ad function.

Most of the time you'll pay at least twice as much money for a monitor and buying beyond perhaps 50" isn't really even possible. Plus, there's nothing saying that monitor manufacturers won't pull their own shenanigans at an moment.
I propose that more people just rake the manufacturers over the coals via social media at every possible opportunity. For whatever reason, it seems that Twitter pretty much rules everything today.

Especially since most dongles are way faster than the craptactic processors/software most smart TVs actually run. But if you use a dongle, it doesn’t actually need to be a monitor to skip the smart tv interface.

Ah, antivirus software, another entire business that sales snake oil. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Samsung just put out that statement because they get money from McAfee or one of the others to advertise buying their snake oil software for their TVs.
If someone doesn’t know, antivirus software isn’t particularly well or securely designed (which I find ironic) regularly breaks the security of other software (e.g. browsers) and often opens your system up with more attack vectors (mostly bugs in the parsing of files that can lead to remote code execution attacks). Of course it also runs with elevated privileges so the attackers code will execute with system level privileges. Feeling safer already?

Worked at an office max. Some printers have long ink lines that get purged between power cycles/calibration/whatever. Printheads need to be run once a week to keep from clogging. When you start any print a bit of ink gets pushed out to clear the pores and it's likely too much. Inside the cartridge the ink is kept in bags, which may be necessary but it's usual to open them and recover 15-30% of the capacity. Ebay resellers do this, the manufacturer certainly does this when you recycle your old ink.
Go back 10-20 years and it's more likely you'll open a printer and find multiple motors and non proprietary components that you don't need their software to use. It's extremely cost optimized now and printers can be broken down into a heap of plastic, some metal rods, and a motor, essentially waste for the landfill. I would compare it to old CRTs that get trashed at record rates.

Someone I my family bought a Samsung TV less than an year ago. Now they needed to move not to far away, but in another country. Their current TV provider doesn't use a set top box, but an app for Samsung TV store. Now the fun part: because they bought the physical TV in another country, they cannot access the store to download the app to watch regular, local TV channels. Resetting to factory defaults didn't help. Samsung says you basically can't use their store on a TV from another country.

I recently bought a new TV here in New Zealand. Judged things "just right" and got a 4K 55-inch "dumb" set for about US$250 -- just before the prices skyrocketed as a result of the chip shortage. It is not at all smart and in my setup it acts as just a dumb monitor. I don't watch broadcast TV (life is far too short). Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime are handled by my Chromecast (no ads) and my large archive of ripped DVD/BluRay disks are handled by a Rasberry Pi running Kodi. A BluRay player takes care of the few disks I've yet to rip.
No ads to be seen anywhere... and because I've ripped most of my DVDs/BluRay disks I don't even get that annoying crap they add to those disks... you know _"you wouldn't download a handbag..."_ etc. The only annoying thing is that Amazon Prime keeps advertising its own content before it plays a video *I* have decided to watch. They are prepared to throw away our rights without having the slightest understanding of how, historically, our rights were hard fought won. I also agree about advertising: I hate it. I allow very little advertising into my life in any form. But most people are moronic zombies who don't even think about issues like this. They just consume. And, if you really don't want to, if anything goes wrong, it doesn't give you an error code. It demands that you install the application to get the error code via the application.

So they need ALL my mobile traffic routed through their servers to set up a dashcam? Eff that. That's why I keep my old phones and use one with nothing personal on it just for this purpose. And uninstall the app immediately after as well. Hell, the McDonald's app requires access to your contacts. Immediate uninstall. When I was a kid, I have seen this Dutch series called (translated) "Let the fish watch TV" ("Laat de Vissen maar TV Kijken") where the story line was utterly absurd. In the story, it was compulsory to watch TV all day long. So you had even a small TV mounted on your bike, etc. (this was mid '80s) Kids had to find ways to cheat so they could do kids stuff like playing outside etc. Just to fool the grown-ups into believing they were watching TV as they should.

In the meanwhile this is the reason I'm more than willing to pay money to ad blockers. Isn't it ironic? But you gotta fight fire with fire, and I'd much rather support an open source project that tries to reverse engineer ads, so that they can block it on your devices. That's right to repair.

My current TVs have only been connected to the internet while checking for firmware updates a few times.. No ads other than what comes from TV stations over cable, and those I skip with my DVR.
I do streaming via A Roku box, which doesn't insert ads anywhere (yet).

The pervasive spread of ads to every device we own is one of the reasons I decided to "build" my own router/gateway out of an old PC. With a custom OS and plenty of processing power I can run my own adblocker software on it, even set very specific rules to block certain devices to reach certain websites.
To a Samsung TV, the domain which services her ads is simply offline. I might not get the UI real state back, but they're not getting my data either.
Eventually most routers will have "adblock" functionality/options built into them. All it is needed is for one company to start doing it for the competition to follow.

You can build a pfSense router out of a micro ITX board and an x86 processor that supports AES NI instructions or just buy a Netgate appliance. piHole as the name implies you can just run on a Raspberry Pi.

A bit like how I remember downloading Microsofts official minesweeper game from their store, in an operating system that I payed them for, for a game that was available in xp... only to find adds in it. That was one of the final straws before I came to Linux.

What's crazy is how many dystopian Futures show us just constantly berated with ads no matter where we go...
I was at Chili's one day and from where I was sitting you could see the whole row of their automated Waiters across the line and anyone that wasn't being used for playing games was just pushing ads.
It just reminds me of how we're just quickly running into this dystopian future of monetization of every part of our existence.

It's going to get to a point where you will need a subscription for each household member to use the bathroom in your own house.
People will buy a new home with biometric toilet scans.
However, if Auntie Jemima comes to visit for a few days, you'll end up paying a $3.99 Toilet Rental fee, as she is not part of the household.

The biggest problem is that these mega corporations will always have enough money to drive competitors without these business models out of business or straight up buy them. There is no free market competition that stops this. Until your representatives actually ENFORCE the laws these things will keep happening. There are already plenty of privacy laws, but they are not enforced as they should be. I haven't used my TV in almost 3 years. Maybe it is worth money since it comes without Ads.
