I managed to grow by posting weekly animations by ultizing a 2-3 month backlog of animations I planned out. They're not as high quality as other animations out there due to the fact I have a very tight schedule to work with, but I manage to grow in that aspect. I also agree that merchandise is one of the best ways for these channels to make revenue. I recently sold tshirts on my channel a few weeks ago and I made 10x more money there then Patreon or Adesene in a single month. I'm planning on intergrating it as a major aspect of my brand. But for those who aren't crazy like me, I think another way animators and artists can grow on UA-cam is by using livestreaming since UA-cam wants to compete against Twitch and often promote livestreams before actual video content. Just hang in there. Being an artist or animator on youtube is tough. Thanks for the video Roberto.
I’ve been putting out animations online for around 5 years. I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time. For me it’s easy to get so lost in the process of creation that I forget about the business aspect. I’m going to rethink how I operate. Thank you.
Golden advice, as usual. The hardest part is executing these principles. Still struggling with consistency since big projects suck away all the time. But like any good habit the hardest part is getting started, then the momentum builds naturally.

Exactly! Back in the old days, there was almost no way to get distribution and no way to promote without at least some upfront cash. But today the potential is almost boundless if you can tap into something people want.
All too many artists feel like they should only focus on making art and neglect the business aspect of it. Artists can be stubborn, myself included. So I think that's one of the major obstacles getting in the way of being successful in a creative field. Thanks for making great videos, Roberto!

Yup-yup, I've been saying this for a couple of years- cartoons were the 22 minute commercials for all of the related merch! And you can look at Star Wars as another example- what's *your* version of all the action figures, shampoo, and Halloween costumes? Artists can make prints, crowd fund books, art toys, etc.!

Hey, I came across you from following the rabbit-trail of Kevin and Josh (I used to listen to Big Illustration Party Time in the studio!) and I've been meaning to check-out more of your content. The big idea that I'm hot on is that unless you're a top tier illustrator, being a jobbing illustrator out-and-out sucks- I've seen this throughout the years, throughout the multitude of desperate Facebook posts from friends that are (just barely) in the business- and from my experiences (and from what I've observed) in the gallery scene, that wasn't much better. Based on that, I'm not even going to try and elbow my way into the illustration industry proper.

Great advice and love your videos. the question I have regarding selling items on Instagram with your characters faces on it, I feel like in order for you to be able to get any sales regarding anything you first have to build your brand to give people a reason to even want to purchase the items. Would say focus first on creating content for Instagram/facebook/youtube to grow an audience before trying to sell stuff on Instagram/facebook/ and patron. Or should you still maybe link out to a store even if you don't have an audience yet and you are in the process of growing?
+Recokh exactly. Building your brand is essential. Link it up so that it's always there so that the option is on the table and it doesn't come out of nowhere.
Yup, you can't sell anything to anyone unless they give a crap first and if you can't build the momentum there, the market might not care about what you're doing. First learn everything you can about how to effectively market your work (like I just quickly looked through your Instagram and all of the hashtags were as if you're marketing to artists/creators- figure-out a cluster of hashtags that basically creates a portrait of the person that you think's going to be into your animations. You should always question the source, so just an FYI, I built up the Nerdarchy account to 3.2k-ish (no longer managing it) and Easy Roller Dice to 4k+, both in under 3 years and without using bots) and if after all of your best efforts you still can't get anything to catch on, it maybe time to reassess and come up with a new project.
wow, amazing, in the past year I started following some instagram accounts ( in my native language) about marketing and that really opened a new perspective for me.. my other step that I should solve is how to pick a niche, and also I am more interested about topic rather than sticking to just photography or filmmaking or animation or illustration.

Thank you for helping with the business aspect of spreading a person's name or brand who is a creative artist Mr. Roberto. I'm creating art and animation ahead of time, even if they're short. Since whenever you start on a platform, you cannot expect to make profits right away. I'm hoping to do gifs or animations ahead of time, that way I could try and build a consistent schedule of posting about every two weeks since it will still be a consistency. So though I won't have anything right now, I do have a job to help sustain myself. And I'm giving myself one year till New Year's to create as much as I can to give myself a head start on to the next year of New Year's and build up better strategies to save time in creating.

I'm also looking into launching my own website,getting a domain and how to link that to an existing site(wordpress,tumblr etc). Or making one from scratch. Or how to start up your own webshop, how to claim your own brand name, tax etc. I'm missing a little guidance. But i'm happy with your channel because you cover subjects a little deeper. You are correct though there is so much more now than 15 years ago. But i still feel a little lost with so much info. I don't know where to start.

very inspiring, I'll try to think up some concepts for a few characters and shorts, I always end up over doing videos and characters so they drag on far too long and the characters become impossible to animate, sticking to 1 minute videos might make it easier. thanks for a good summer goal!
I REALLY need to see this. As an aspiring animator, I have this idea of "I don't want to upload unless it's final." It's the "perfectionist's mindset" that I have been trying to overcome. However, I have had thoughts of posting up say, rough animatics when I get them done. Maybe not to the WHOLE animation though. I think it would be good as a teaser to the final animation!

Well, im trying to reverse engineering the animation industry a little and untill ill be able to afford that ill give my knowledge for free (id consider merch more than anything else). What i mean by that is growing the industry which will gives more work and better commisions. How to attract more people if they have to pay for the quality knowledge? I belive i can make money in different way like offering courses for companies for better money than just random people that wants to start
Awesome advice! I'm so excited to start my YT channel and use a more strategic approach in my content creation. Totally agree on the importance of building a brand and not relying on a single platform (which I see a lot of artists do). The only thing I can't really figure out yet is what kind of content to share in a newsletter since I pretty much share everything already in some way. I once had a small mailing list promoting my comic but eventually I stopped working on that comic so I stopped sending newsletters too. As with everything, sending newsletters consistently is important (I did once a month). I'll probably sign up to other artists' mailing lists (if I find any that have that LOL) and see what they post. Anyway, thank you so much for all the videos you make!

this was terrific. just what i needed and confirms the approach i have been taking recently Robert. I have some long tutorials that i have cut up into mini segments to use as multiple videos and working on batching. If you work full time you have to be organized. i would also like to add that if many of you have full time jobs that take up all your free time....look to make a change. get a job that enables you to spend your free time doing what you love and reduce netflix and cabke tv consumption.

I was of the previous mindset that I could just focus on Google ad sense and everything will work out after that. But the with the Coppa - apocalypse on the horizon, youtube may not be viable to me as an Animator. Thanks for this video, I've been a working artist for almost 20 years. At the end of the week, after a lot of planning, I'm going to finally start filming myself making all my paintings and drawings from here on out and your videos have been very helpful in making this latest step. It seems like I hear a lot of beginning UA-camrs lament about not having ideas for videos, but as an artist content is pouring out of you all the time, I just see it as a matter of recording it and presenting it in an interesting way. Also, the brick and mortar art gallery system has been in a rapid decline for decades, these online platforms really seem to be the best way to get your art out to people which has always been my main goal, quitting the day job is a not too distant second. *Artists*: PLEASE GET A WEBSITE AND BLOG. Eventually, GET AN EMAIL LIST. All-caps feels like I'm screaming at you, I know. But please trust me on this. I don't know if I'm following the wrong people, but many, many, many artists don't have this. Especially for those on dA and FurAffinity. A website automatically makes you look more professional, boosting your perceived value and gives you, your brand, and your work a consistent home base that you control to refer to. Start off with Wordpress or Wix if you have to, just get something. Please. Blogging ~ Use this opportunity to share your experiences, your knowledge, the STORIES behind your pieces. The INSPIRATION behind your piece, works in progresses. Make your work look better than "just a pretty picture", give meaning to your pieces! Share your process, share your inspirations, share what makes you an artist. I can't tell you how frustrating it is looking for artists with blogs and websites to collaborate with and to follow. Selling ~ I see so many people on Etsy and Amazon Handmade. This isn't bad, per se, but creators have limited to no control on how to conduct their business. Handmade may decide your prices and restrict outside contact with your buyers to ensure they are Amazon's customers, not yours. This means no email lists, no ways in contacting them, no building customer relationships. When shipping, your products are placed in Amazon Handmade branding, not yours. Etsy has an... interesting algorithm that can restrict your ability to be found, drowning you out to other creatives. They will also potentially side with customers during disputes, and may terminate your account, or freeze your shop for any reason. Get your own website. Your fans (and business) will thank you. ;) *Animators*: If you want to follow someone who's doing it right, Bloop Animation is one to take a look at. www.bloopanimation.com/ He uses his email list to share his process with creating a short animations. I'm a stop motion animator, and just want to make money telling stories through stop motion. I looked at my YT analytics and noticed my "age demographic" ranges from 12-25 year olds. The majority being young teens and older, how do I make my content, IE my stop motion animation shows/ short films, appealing to all ages? Lastly this was very helpful thank you very much for making this.
I agreed with what you said. And this is the direction that i am heading in with my future rebrand. My current hurdle now is to find the best way to promote the brand on facebook. I dont mind spending money on promoted post on FB but is there a better way to do this? Have you covered this in one of your previous videos? I'll look again trough your backlog Thanks in advance
+Sketchflix I use organic post 99% of the time and doing photos and videos is working more than linking UA-cam videos embedded. I later threw super small snouts of money at it in Instagram and Facebook to see if it could boost it. It helped a little.
Should you create a separate channel for behind the scenes of animation and I am a beginner so I don't have any cartoons. Should I focus on just creating animated shorts based off one character posting on all social platforms possible and create ebooks based off the character and wait to do a full blown cartoon show when I have more people

For some reason, I was getting so caught up in making money off UA-cam, it didn't really occur to me that UA-cam could be just a piece in the brand and business from the beginning, instead of adding some products and stuff later on if things go well. Well, im trying to reverse engineering the animation industry a little and untill ill be able to afford that ill give my knowledge for free (id consider merch more than anything else). What i mean by that is growing the industry which will gives more work and better commisions. How to attract more people if they have to pay for the quality knowledge? I belive i can make money in different way like offering courses for companies for better money than just random people that wants to start
Awesome advice! I'm so excited to start my YT channel and use a more strategic approach in my content creation. Totally agree on the importance of building a brand and not relying on a single platform (which I see a lot of artists do). The only thing I can't really figure out yet is what kind of content to share in a newsletter since I pretty much share everything already in some way. I once had a small mailing list promoting my comic but eventually I stopped working on that comic so I stopped sending newsletters too. As with everything, sending newsletters consistently is important (I did once a month). I'll probably sign up to other artists' mailing lists (if I find any that have that LOL) and see what they post. Anyway, thank you so much for all the videos you make!
Great advice I definitely see that you have to be creative with everything you do not just your passion whatever may be technically working smarter and not harder even though is not going to be easy .thanks for this type of video Roberto !

this was terrific. just what i needed and confirms the approach i have been taking recently Robert. I have some long tutorials that i have cut up into mini segments to use as multiple videos and working on batching. If you work full time you have to be organized. i would also like to add that if many of you have full time jobs that take up all your free time....look to make a change. get a job that enables you to spend your free time doing what you love and reduce netflix and cabke tv consumption.

I was of the previous mindset that I could just focus on Google ad sense and everything will work out after that. But the with the Coppa - apocalypse on the horizon, youtube may not be viable to me as an Animator. Thanks for this video, I've been a working artist for almost 20 years. At the end of the week, after a lot of planning, I'm going to finally start filming myself making all my paintings and drawings from here on out and your videos have been very helpful in making this latest step. It seems like I hear a lot of beginning UA-camrs lament about not having ideas for videos, but as an artist content is pouring out of you all the time, I just see it as a matter of recording it and presenting it in an interesting way. Also, the brick and mortar art gallery system has been in a rapid decline for decades, these online platforms really seem to be the best way to get your art out to people which has always been my main goal, quitting the day job is a not too distant second. *Artists*: PLEASE GET A WEBSITE AND BLOG. Eventually, GET AN EMAIL LIST.
All-caps feels like I'm screaming at you, I know. But please trust me on this. I don't know if I'm following the wrong people, but many, many, many artists don't have this. Especially for those on dA and FurAffinity. A website automatically makes you look more professional, boosting your perceived value and gives you, your brand, and your work a consistent home base that you control to refer to. Start off with Wordpress or Wix if you have to, just get something. Please.
Blogging ~ Use this opportunity to share your experiences, your knowledge, the STORIES behind your pieces. The INSPIRATION behind your piece, works in progresses. Make your work look better than "just a pretty picture", give meaning to your pieces! Share your process, share your inspirations, share what makes you an artist. I can't tell you how frustrating it is looking for artists with blogs and websites to collaborate with and to follow.
Selling ~ I see so many people on Etsy and Amazon Handmade. This isn't bad, per se, but creators have limited to no control on how to conduct their business. Handmade may decide your prices and restrict outside contact with your buyers to ensure they are Amazon's customers, not yours. This means no email lists, no ways in contacting them, no building customer relationships. When shipping, your products are placed in Amazon Handmade branding, not yours.
Etsy has an... interesting algorithm that can restrict your ability to be found, drowning you out to other creatives. They will also potentially side with customers during disputes, and may terminate your account, or freeze your shop for any reason.
Get your own website. Your fans (and business) will thank you. ;)

Join his email list and follow the content, value and insights he's providing. Do something similar, and make it *better*.

I'm a stop motion animator, and just want to make money telling stories through stop motion. I looked at my YT analytics and noticed my "age demographic" ranges from 12-25 year olds. The majority being young teens and older, how do I make my content, IE my stop motion animation shows/ short films, appealing to all ages?

I agreed with what you said. And this is the direction that i am heading in with my future rebrand. My current hurdle now is to find the best way to promote the brand on facebook. I dont mind spending money on promoted post on FB but is there a better way to do this? Have you covered this in one of your previous videos? I'll look again trough your backlog Thanks in advance
+Sketchflix I use organic post 99% of the time and doing photos and videos is working more than linking UA-cam videos embedded. I later threw super small snouts of money at it in Instagram and Facebook to see if it could boost it. It helped a little.

Should you create a separate channel for behind the scenes of animation and I am a beginner so I don't have any cartoons. Should I focus on just creating animated shorts based off one character posting on all social platforms possible and create ebooks based off the character and wait to do a full blown cartoon show when I have more people

That was great! Really helpful advice! For some reason, I was getting so caught up in making money off UA-cam, it didn't really occur to me that UA-cam could be just a piece in the brand and business from the beginning, instead of adding some products and stuff later on if things go well. I have to build the brand from the start. But I honestly don't know where to begin with this. How do I get people to even know I exist? Thank you.
I think this applies to other types of creators too. Focus on merchandise to get extra sales, and have bts content.
