this really has some much rollover for other creative fields. I find is especially relatable as an architecture student. I have managed to secure both jobs and numerous interviews and connections by showing passion and approaching a company with the mindset of doing an unpaid internship. I have no doubt these connection can lead somewhere when I graduate from my studies.

This was EXACTLY what I needed today. I was feeling so suffocated at my job today, and a little helpless on how I could build my business to be sustainable. Definitely going to start Doing more with my local business association in order to at least know the business owners and get a connection
This is definitely fantastic advice - I got lucky having a GD job lined up after college, but in some ways I feel that it has also stunted my growth. Starting off "hungry" always makes you work harder - and you hone your skills more. This is advice that I can also use as a "seasoned" designer. Thanks for the tips, Roberto. Been binge watching/listening to your videos while designing today. Appreciate the hard work you put behind these videos.
One of my first freelance jobs came from reaching out to a local start up sneaker boutique that I visited shortly after it opened. I went to ask if they needed someone to create graphics for them and 3 years later we're still working together. Around the time I started to work with them I created my channel where I draw sneakers. Which means I can quickly advertise the clothes I design at the beginning of my videos to increase sales!
I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos, they have been very helpful for me as an upcoming youtuber. I love how in depth you go and how much you seem to care, and am very thankful that you do what you do:)

That was my first part time (professional) graphics job, and it was *that* job that became full time and gave me a name and opened doors in marketing . . . that became my full career. ...actual fact!

I'm 23 and starting my 3rd year in my GD major in the fall. I had no highschool experience which made me feel nervous, but right now I'm shadowing and working on projects with the GD Dept for my college so I can learn and grow. I've started becoming a graphic designer in the last couple of years. I've always had an interest in media arts but never really knew what I wanted to do until recently. Since I've had enough of working for fast food companies, thought I would change careers. I'm in my second year of a bachelor media arts degree. I decided to study as I don't have much design experience. Your tips have helped me to start figuring out where I want to go.

Great video Roberto! Want to know what is your advice for older designers who want to make a career change from their current occupation that has noting to do with design to a design career. I can see how the advice in this video could apply to a older designer, but I would appreciate your take on how to transition to a creative field as a older adult. Thanks! Nick
I think it can apply to a lot of fields this is great advice. In Japan it is normal to live with your family until marriage . I remember Texan in Tokyo gave the same advice about building relationships and get a foot in the door with a free project 👍🏽

This video needs to be played in every university, high school, middle school, and yes even every elementary school's art program and/or art computer lab. The sooner they start getting real world experience the better their career will be and the faster it will jump off. If I had it to do all over again I wouldn’t have gotten a degree but would’ve taught myself with books and Lynda.com and just invested in equipment and software, locked myself in a room and learned it till I was a pro.

I used Photoshop mainly to make funny pictures of me and my friends, and i went from there to now where i design t shirt art. now i would not call myself a graphic designer, as most of my skill is basic, but i love what i do and i want to continue in that direction. Since i am just 19, is it still early to start this as a career or should i work up to expand my knowledge?
also, is photoshop enough or should i try to learn any other programs?

hey. i kind of fell into graphic design and i think your advice is pretty consistent with my accidental success. i started working for this company just doing sales, on my own i dabble with photoshop, and i realized their logo wasn't as strong as it could have been. i went home and just put together some designs i thought were cool and they ended up using a few. since then I've had 2 other companies approach me to do graphic designs for them. Ive been following you for a minute but more for the branding stuff, do you have any books on graphic design that you'd recommend for someone trying to beef up their skill set?

Roberto, I had one little constructive criticism - can you use the term pro bono as opposed to “free work”? Its a semantics issue, I know, but we Creatives have been so undervalued and dogged out in the professional world, those little small nuances can really make a difference in someone’s psyche.
Re: Free Gigs-- My policy has always been to never work for free unless I offer or I am working for a nonprofit. By doing this, I've basically got nobody to blame but myself when things go south with the project, and I've got more freedom to choose projects that I think are solid portfolio pieces.
Hello Roberto, first thank you for your time and effort. As you asked for: I have some serious questions for you:
I'm tier zero point five in skill, have a poor machine and make in a U$3,5/hour in a full time job in my third world country (where a single guy just made the currency lose almost a third of it's value with one scam, the last month scam of the nation...).
I've no High School, diploma formation, and I'm almost your age.Having learned english by osmosis, my tactics is modeling people like you to thrive and succeed (maybe get the hell out of here will be a milestone...).
I learned the very basics of Photoshop and Illustrator but my "design" (its crap yet I admit) still looks cheap. And now that you (wisely I think...) have prohibited us to cross the Fiverr bridge like Gandalf once blocked Balrog, I feel kind of lost in the Freelas Tirith Dungeons of Doom.
People here wait all happens by the government or God, I do believe in the power of sweat and hard work, but this only hard work behavior make difficult to do smart work, which you seems to be master. What strategies do you recommend for a low resource amateur evolve to professional?
I think I'm not dumb just uneducated, I have good ideas and creativity but, like a monkey lacking the knowledge to make fire, my design results are still quite sh* er..., messy. But being that bad there's lots of room for evolving.

i'm 17 and a spark of interest in becoming a graphic designer . ever since i was i was around 8 years old i had lot of experience with lettering to graffiti how would i be able to transition myself in order practice and prepare for a graphic design .
How many pieces should I have in my graphc design porfolio? I was thining 30 pieces. Where do I go for some ideas to add into my portfolio?
Poor design is everywhere, I would look at the facebook pages of friends, look at your neighborhood as well. Like coffee shops, mom and pop operations etc that are in need of new or spiffyed up logos.
doing spec work is stupid if you don't do your homework. I did spec to both get the practice and build my resume. so spec is good if you are carefull with who and what you're doing. you pay a lot for school so doing a few spec work is a lot cheaper and more beneficial

Good morning Roberto, I am a "seasoned" woman and I Freelance with my Graphic Design. I have listened to your UA-cam video titled Career Advice: What If I Was Getting Started as a Graphic Designer Today and I have a question. I have 3 Associates Degrees and two are in Graphic Design. In the work force, if I don't have a "Bachelors" degree it's frowned upon. Do you think it's mandatory to necessarily go and get my 4th degree?
Who is actually frowning upon it? Your money is better spent networking and getting past the "filter" if you're worried

It's pretty competitive, if your work isn't chosen then you still have a conceptual piece of work you can add to your portfolio.

What do you mean, $299 for 30 designs? If you're a designer you simply sign up and look for work on that site. The $299 is if you're looking for others to design your app, website, etc. If you feel like you're ready to start freelancing go for it. That's a really good way to gain confidence and experience.
