Lesley was fighting the patriarchy way back when! I was just a little girl and I had two older sisters, and I remember how this song made us feel. It was different than anything else.
1963 !!!! Girls just didn't talk this way to guys back then! This song is still great!!!! As for the 50's sound and look ~ things didn't change as fast then as they do today. The sound and look of the 50's continued into the 1960's ~ that changed around the time of the Beatles "invasion" ~
Shawn, your reactions always put me in a great mood!! 😁I LOVE LESLIE GORE!! One of my favorite female artists. My favorite songs from her are: "SUNSHINE, LOLLIPOPS, and RAINBOWS", and "CALIFORNIA NIGHTS". "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn to Cry", and "Maybe I Know", are all so catchy. I'm super happy you enjoyed this song!! 🎶🎶💙🎶🎶
I was a little girl when Lesley Gore was on the radio. My older cousin Jo used to sing her songs all over the house. I have great memories of those days. "California Nights" is my favorite. Also, check out "Its My Party" and "Judy's Turn To Cry." These are the songs I know best, and they are 🔥🔥
A box arrived at my home when I was 9 years old. It was filled with 45 singles all of the same song called "It's My Party" by Lesley Gore. It was co-written by Uncle and produced by Quincy Jones. It went on to be a huge hit. The sequel was Judy's Turn to Cry.
I am an aussie woman who grew up listening to all this great music! I was a teenager in the 70's and really love listening to all sorts of music. I too appreciate good music. Try to listen to some Australian artists they were absolutely great. Little River Band, Sherbert, Russell Morris, Brian Cadd. I really like you and your reactions and the way you really take the time to go through the songs. It's great how you appreciate this beautiful music of the 60's 70's and the 80's best 3 decades for music in my opinion. So much diversity and artists being creative and doing their own thing. They were'nt worried about being unique!

More of her songs ~ ~ ~ She's a Fool, It's My Party, California Nights, Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows, Judy's turn to Cry ~ the list goes on and on ~ ~ ~
Leslie Gore was a huge star in her teens, but she quit to go to college, and when she tried to come back after graduating, the whole music business had changed(British Invasion, Motown) and her career never recovered.
Lesley continued her education while continuing her career. It's My Party hit the charts in 1963. In the fall of 1963, Lesley entered her senior year of high school. She graduated in June 1964. In the fall of 1964, she entered Sarah Lawrence College. She graduated college in 1968. She limited her personal appearances and recording sessions to holidays and summer breaks. The music scene had changed and Lesley found it difficult to get hits when she graduated. She had good producers but nothing clicked. Her last top 20 hit was California Nights in 1967. She recorded Wedding Bell Blues however the 5th Dimension version hit the charts first.
She has other songs from the '60's. I remember two that are a sequel of sorts. The first one is the first song I ever heard by her, and that's "It's My Party". Followed by the sequel, "Judy's Turn to Cry". Great voice. Thanks for letting us listen with you, and God bless you!
Lesley Gore, was an American singer, songwriter & actress. At the age of 16, she recorded "It's My Party" in 1963. She followed it up with many more hits including "Judy's Turn to Cry", "That's The Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know", "Look Of Love", "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows" etc. Sadly she died in 2015.
Leslie Gorr :’ 1. It’s My Party ( and I’ll cry if I want to) 2. It’s Judy’s Turn To Cry * do in this order the second song is a sequel to the first one!!👍
'it's my party' was one of the early 60's monster hits and is most likely still recognizable by about 99% of the people even if you were not from that era. she was a star. from the first line you will say 'oh yeah i've heard that one before '.
It always makes me laugh when I hear someone say they have never heard of an artist, or heard them, when it's someone I've known all my life, since the 60's, and know all their songs, lol. I saw Lesley in a concert in the park in NJ in 2005, she was wonderful, she signed autographs afterwards and was so warm and lovely to everyone, I got to speak to her for a minute. A lovely lady, truly missed.
This was Leslie all grown up. My favorite song of hers. Saw her, the Beach Boys and the Beatles on closed circuit at the movie theater(that was a thing in the '60s. Was also the only way to watch the Indianapolis 500 too) way back when. Nice triple bill.
Check out the concert: T.A.M.I. Show. Lesley is featured and is singing "live": Maybe I Know; You Don't Own Me; You Didn't Look 'Round; Hey Now; It's My Party; Judy's Turn To Cry.
Great fun reaction! I agree with the others who suggested to listen to “It’s my party”….& then “It’s Judy’s turn to cry” You will love the story telling! 🙂 Thanks Shawn!
Taylor uses this song as a countdown to open her concerts as a dis to her former label as she fights back to rerecord her first 6 albums so that she owns her own masters.
Hey Shawn you need to listen to a lot more of her hits they are all bangers, great music and singer of the 60's. "It's my party" and "She's a fool" "Judy's turn to cry" plus loads more hits. Please keep listening to her hits they are great and you won't be disappointed.
I was 11-12 and loved her. As I learned in my adulthood, she was deprived of lots of money. Not everyone lived as you described. I was a latch key kid always. No housewife mommy. She was wearing fashion from her era. Strike 3. You still are fabulous
This song was produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Check his wiki for his many credits -- including TV theme songs like "Sanford and Son." He has produced songs and albums for many of the greatest, including Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, and Michael Jackson (OFF THE WALL, THRILLER and BAD albums). He's still around at 91.
lesley gore made an appearance on the batman t.v. series should take a look singing of my fave song california nights great singer quincy jones i think discover her but produced many of her hits !
Quincy Jones produced Lesley's recordings from 1963 through mid-1965 when he left Mercury to go to the West Coast. He also produced a few tracks on her California Nights album in 1967. Later, he produced her album Love Me By Name in 1975.
Check out "Cook with Fire" by Heart. The studio version is the best version. They made it sound live, but it isn't. Also, check out "Don't Let it Bring you Down." The best version is on the LP "4 Way Street" by CSNY. Neil tells a joke before the song and the reaction from the audience is hilarious (it's a live version).
Margo Price does a great cover. She performed it at a FarmAid I was working. And the song was featured in The First Wives Club. Which is a fantastic movie to check out.
Lesley also had a cameo appearance in the movie "The Girls On The Beach". Here she lip-synced the songs Leave Me Alone; It's Gotta Be You' and I Don't Wanna Be A Loser. All songs from her 1964 album, Boys, Boys, Boys.
Shawn, nice oldie. Suggest: ....You belong to me" by Gene Vincent......"Kingston market" "Jamaica farewell" by Harry Belefonte...."Ferry cross the Mersey" by Gerry and Pacemakers
Yeah, Shawn, you got it basically right, but this was truly a bold statement in 1963.. as the “modern feminist movement” really started about 10 years later. What I love is that the music combines some of the traditional “doo-wap” tone of the late 50s, but the mood is SERIOUS… Just the chord progression says ‘listen, mister, I mean it..”. Not quite threatening, but strong and determined. Fantastic song, and though I was just a 10-year old kid, this song did make the radio, got heard, and was popular. I was just too young to now report on how it was ‘taken’ by young men and women at the time.
Here's another song by an artist that you've reacted to before and I thought you might like to listen to this tune with Shana, if interested. "Mark Knopfler - What It Is (La noche abierta, 02.11.2000)" (by the channel: Mark Knopfler) --This song was written and recorded by Knopfler. It is from his second solo album called "Sailing To Philadelphia" released in 2000. You might want to consider going back and checking out some of the Dire Strait songs that you've reacted to, but Shana hasn't heard or maybe she knows but has never seen the video. Either way, I enjoyed rocking with you. Thanks for sharing.
Other commenters have said this, but it is not to be understated. Those lyrics were shocking in the context of where society was when this song came out.I know this because I was there, lol.
I was there too, 16 years old. But I didn't find it shocking at all. I knew plenty of girls who used the exact same phrase on their boyfriends. I can understand though how some girls might have seen it as symbolic of the broader issue of other suppressions of woman by men, which undeniably existed. I just don't remember anyone I knew thinking of it as much more than a breakup song, and I certainly didn't ever hear anyone calling it shocking or revolutionary at the time.
Sorry “Sal” but the beautiful Leslie Gore” Who I idolized for so many years when I was younger and now I am 72 years old but the bad news is she has been married to another girl for over 30 years now!!! Yes it broke my heart!!.,💔💔💔💔😢😢😢
you should do a reaction with your wife, and if you like live versions there is good one that's black and white is actually live which is rare for the sixties. Dusty Springfield did a decent cover, another female powerhouse voice of the sixties
Yes, she was. However she had stated many times that she didn't feel the need to flaunt it peoples' faces at the time. Everybody she worked with knew it. She officially came out in 2005 when she recorded her album Ever Since.

Exactly, this song was ahead of its time but foreshadowed the woman's movement several years later.
Lesley also did hit record “It’s My Party ( and I’ll cry if I want to)”.
When the women's movement was young, Lesley putting whispers into the women's consciousness. Thank You
Love it. Back in the day we wanted to be her as she was our hero. Glad you picked this, Shawn. Blessings all.
Now you need to check the Klaus Nomi cover of this. A good description would be other worldly?
I have always liked those first few notes. Plus her fantastic voice. Now take a listen to her other hits--like "It's my Party."
It's My Party is her biggest hit. (Judy's Turn to Cry is the follow-up to it.)
Judy's Turn To Cry hit the #5 spot on Billboard in 1963.
Check out Dusty Springfield 😊

Lesley and her amazing eyes!

Fun Trivia: Joan Jett covered this on her "Bad Reputation" LP.....My other favorite Leslie Gore songs are "Maybe I Know" and "She's A Fool".
Gutsy song for that time. Now you have to react to Helen Reddy and her song I Am Woman.
Such a great song!!! She was ahead of her time!!! This should’ve been a conscious anthem for us women!!!
I was 10 when this came out and it had a huge influence on me when I started dating.

Definitely.
This song says SO MUCH!! LOVE LESLIE GORE!! THANKS, SHAWN!!!

Recently, Ann Wilson of Heart recorded a modern cover of the song with Warren Haynes on guitar. It really rocks and is well worth a listen.
This song was produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Check his wiki for his many credits -- including TV theme songs like "Sanford and Son." She and her brother co-wrote numerous songs for the 1980 movie "Fame". Great movie, BTW. Haven't seen any reactions to it.
Yes, Lesley wrote Out Here On My Own, which Irene Cara had a big hit with.
Margo Price does a great cover. She performed it at a FarmAid I was working. And the song was featured in The First Wives Club. Which is a fantastic movie to check out.
There's a cello artist called Rasputina who does a cool version of this song.
Whoa! Rasputina! Flashback to Buffy the Vampire Slayer...
Checkout Connie Francis song (and the movie) „Where the Boys Are“. I believe it came out in 1960…. Has that „big band“ sound. Cheers
Connie also recorded a disco version of Where The Boys Are.

A classic Women's Lib song. For a more humorous song of the same vane, Wanda Jackson's "My Big Iron Skillet".
There were a million (country) songs sung by men with lyrics similar to these. But for a woman to sing a song like this was highly unusual.
Yeah, Shawn, you got it basically right, but this was truly a bold statement in 1963.. as the “modern feminist movement” really started about 10 years later. The '50s, as you correctly described them, lasted until at least 1964, so you're not wrong that these lyrics were ahead of its time.
