  • When we invest it's wise to avoid making hasty decisions as they can often result in costly mistakes. So it's useful to have a checklist of criteria that funds or stocks have to satisfy before they make it into our portfolio. In this video, I go through my checklist of criteria for choosing funds for my portfolio and outline the requirements they must meet.

    Trouble with your bonds is that over recent years UK gilts have offered significant negative returns with a standard deviation that is nearly comparable to many stocks. Yes, there would be a weak negative correlation with stocks, but since that would represent a loss in value would it really be a diversification step worth applying to your portfolio?

      Don't be a marketing strategy for luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Tag Heuer without having your money give birth to more money (I recommend ''The Richest Man In Babylon'') Rather, you can move to wealth by reducing expenses and increasing savings or investments. As far as I'm concerned, its ideal to consult a reliable financial advisor for such objectives...

    Another great video! I have a quick question on fees....I’m looking to drip feed money currently held in cash in a Vanguard ISA (UK). From what I can tell the transaction cost are a very small percentage of the trade eg for VEVE the charge is 0.03%. Therefore, am I correct in saying that the size and frequency of each transaction is irrelevant as I will pay the say fees regardless? Thanks in advance

    • @Pensioncraft
      @Pensioncraft  Рік тому

      Hi Flintridge on some platforms if you save regularly you don't pay any transaction fees. On Vanguard's platform you don't pay transaction fees on any transactions except if you trade on a quoted price for an ETF. But if you're paying 0.03% that's very small. Hopefully the platform you're on is low fee overall? Thanks, Ramin

    The asset return graph is critical.
    It shows every asset outpacing inflation. How can this be?
    Think of double entry accounting, whereby every liability is matched to every asset. One cannot exceed the other.
    So all global assets must match all money supply. This is because currency is the measure of all value and instrument of all transactions. Ultimately, currency represents a promise to pay. It is the liability against the asset.
    Do they match? Have we equilibrium? Because the actual valuations suggest assets often exceed money base and supply, which exposes a liquidity issue in any scenario where investors rapidly and collectively attempt to realise the value of their assets into currency. There simply isn't enough to cover all the liabilities and transfer assets into cash. There isn't enough to keep the promise.
    This is the precipitation of a financial crisis.
    It seems possible that assets, collectively, are mostly overvalued compared to the money supply they are valued in. This phenomena is caused by speculation. The reality is exposed once fear enters the mind of investors, then the lenders of last resort have to plug the gap.

    I don't like this 'currency' consideration you do, Ramin. I remember doing a comment on one of your videos along the lines of "so I'd have been a genius to invest in Zimbabwe because the currently tanked - and therefore my Zim $ holdings would have looked stellar?". Sure, that's a reductio ad absurdem - but the point remains: if I'm holding in a weakening currency a) I'll notice that when travelling during my retirement b) I'll notice that in the price of imported goods while living in the UK. The cost of my haircut might not be affected but at lot will..... At very least, I think you should moderate your enthusiasm for the paper performance of investments when read in weakening currency

      I started a few weeks ago using Trading 212, it's a great tool indeed. The caveat to keep in mind though, and that's the reason I would not make it my main broker account and will keep Degiro, is that it's fractional shares investments and you cannot transfer them to another account. For now it's a closed environment. I hope they manage to open it in the future!

    • @edwyatt8810
      @edwyatt8810 Рік тому +1

      I wonder if the 3% gain in gold is a bit misleading as the chart went back to 1870. Gains since 1970 would be much higher from a low price of £68 per ounce to a high of £1644

    • @tastypymp1287
      @tastypymp1287 Рік тому

      @Ed Wyatt It's all misleading. Real returns are important, because essentially investors are looking to beat inflation and then the risk free rate (if it's higher than inflation).
      It doesn't matter about gold from 1970. Value is merely a comparison against other items of value. How gold performed against inflation and other asset classes from 1970 is the important metric.

    Equities aren't 'inflation busting'. They are inflation!! Financial alchemy, the science of turning actual inflation in prices due to money supply, into growth in an asset class.
