MTD Snowblower Doesn't Move - HOW to FIX!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Step by Step Tutorial!
In today's video, we'll be looking at a YardMachines snowblower (MTD) that won't move forward or back!
The reason this happens is due to the roller bearings seizing up. These bearings are located inside the gears that mount on the drive axle.
If you contact MTD customer service & tell them you're experiencing this issue, they may send you an MTD Drive Repair Kit Part # 75305173A at no cost. However, this issue can still occur, as the new kit is identical to the old parts.
Once we drained the oil, flipped it up and removed the access panel, we can begin our disassembly.
Following the steps in this video, you'll be able to remove both the upper and lower axles, to gain access at the gear bearings.
You don't have to remove both gears, however, I recommend cleaning and lubricating both gears! As you'll see in the video, even though the upper gear still rotated on the shaft, once we removed it we could see it didn't have any lubrication inside of it (Meaning this issue would have happened again).
I also replaced both outer bearings for the lower axle as well.
Once everything was cleaned, we greased the bearings using Roller Bearing specific grease (It's super sticky and won't come out as easy).
We then reassemble everything, and lubricate both axles.
After these steps are completed, we use Oil and Grease remover to wipe down the friction wheel and drive disc, to ensure there is no slippage of the friction wheel when driving!
If you follow the steps in this video, this repair should take you anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete. You may also need a wide range of tools to complete this repair.

The roller bearings can be pressed out and replaced if they are too badly damaged. The roller bearing part numbers are SCE1211 (2 for the wider gear) and SCE1214 (1 for the narrow gear).
I've also heard you may need an SCE1212 and SCE1210 so please measure and research.
Cheaper than buying a Drive Repair Kit - MTD Part # 75305173A
This video just shows you how to repair the issue without replacing the gears. Thanks for watching everyone!
Great detailed video !!
Have you or anybody else found out for sure if the repair kit is available for free from MTD ?
Many people have said that if you call and complain, they will send you a $200 repair kit free of charge. This is due to it being a "silent recall". I however, have not done that, so I can't speak from my own experiences.
I am actually doing a Troybilt at the moment. The wheels are completely frozen fast although the machine has little if any rust. Tomm when the weather clears up I am going to take the old smoke wrench to the wheels and the puller.. I cannot believe how they are seized on that little shaft. I may attempt to also drill thru the wheels so I can use a steering wheel puller on the wheels to help in the issues. This is not the norm for these machines but a few of em have what seems like a black locktite not just holding the wheel bolts but the wheel itself. I seen a video of guy that ended up cutting the axle and machining out the wheel hubs. What a friggin drag wrecking both the axle and wheel hubs.
@diver dave Dave they do sell just the bearings I have em here if you need the bearings or the bearing numbers. It's about $75 total
I just called MTD. They do not have that as a recall, or warranty Would not send any parts.
Where were you the last 52 times I had to repair my machine??? Best explaination of the process I have ever heard.
Thanks for watching!
Just repaired my MTD blower with this same problem. Toughest part was getting the gear off the wheel axle even after removing the rust from the axle. Both bearings on both axles and one of the outside bearings seized all at the same time, 3 out of 4. Now they’re all greased and working again. Thx for this video great job!
Thanks for watching!
I am not The Most Mechanically Inclined Person, But at times I Can Be.
But Due to Your Incredibly thorough video, I followed you Steps 1 By 1 and Found the Lower Axle Bearing, which is the Exact One That was Seized in the Video.
I ended up removing it and Used a Old Family remedy to Remove the rust, Which I couldn’t believe it Worked because the Roller Bearings were All completely Seized with Solid Rust, But after 20-30 minutes of Soaking, I used an old Tooth Brush and Spent about 5 Minutes Brushing the Rust Out and it Completely took all the Rust off and The Roller Bearing Rolled Just Like Brand New!!!!
I Greased Everything Back Up And Reassembled the Unit Step by Step and it Actually Moves and Works better than Brand New!!!!
It Cost me Less Than $10 for Brake Cleaner and Marine Grease and a Gun!!
It Took Me About 3 Hours to complete and SINCERELY WANT TO THANK YOU!!!
I Appreciate the time you put into your video, Because It Was Priceless to Me.
Keep up the Great Work
Thanks, Rich
Cheers Rich, glad you got it fixed up!
Excellent video from start to finish.
Greatest how to video I have ever found on UA-cam! I am always learning how to fix things because most people would throw something out that they don't know how to fix, I would rather figure out how to fix it. I was really just wondering what would cause a snow blower wheel to seize and I found your video. I had only planned on watching a few minutes to get an idea for the repair but I ended up watching all 33 minutes of your video. Extremely informative, you took it nice and slow but not so slow that it was painful to watch, I really wish all UA-cam videos could be like yours. You definitely just got another subscriber, thanks so much for the info :)
Hey thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching! New vids every week!
TY EP! What we have here is one of the most professional "how to" videos carefully detailing how to accomplish a difficult task into a walk in the park. You have knocked it out of the park! My Yardman (aka MTD) drive just stopped working. Ironically, I changed the drive belt when I replaced both auger belts (belts worked but were 20 years old!) just a few weeks ago. I hold down the drive handle, and nothing happens. Changing gears does not change this experience. Any guesses as to what is wrong? Anyway, I have yet to determine the cause and found this video in preparation for what I may be dealing with. The *worse* part of this video is the guilt I have for not realizing all the preventative maintenance I should have been doing within the gear housing. In my defense, I give her new plug, oil, and lube the items _outside_ of the gear housing every year. I was afraid of breaking what isn't broke by removing the gear cover lol - cheers!
Thanks for the kind words Chris, sounds like you have a friction wheel issue, it's possible that the cable just needs adjustment.
Check out my latest vid on that: ua-cam.com/video/BqPES4-84JE/v-deo.html
Hope this helps!
How about doing a video on how those gears interact with each other. For the life of me I couldn’t figure it out watching this video. Really enjoy your channel and your professionalism.
Thanks for watching CircleP!
You’re very thorough! Nice fix! I just picked up a Yardman for $80.OO because of the axle bearings being rusted on the axle. Had to use a cutting wheel on my dremel to get them off. It takes awhile de-rusting the various parts, but it’s an enjoyable hobby. I give them to family and friends.
Thanks for watching!
Great step-by-step instructional video. Your directions helped me with the bearings in the large dual gear located on the lower drive axle. The bearings on the end were fine. It was the roller bearings in the large gear that locked up my wheels from turning. Removed it, sprayed the bearings with silicone spray to lubricate them and then applied grease. Reassembled, Bob's your uncle! Thanks for this. Saved me a lot of my own trouble shooting. Cheers!!
Thanks for watching!
My same problem on the upper gear. Yard Machines 5.5 hp. $50 at a yard sale.
Unfortunately I ripped the whole thing apart first and it took the whole day to figure it out. That same night I was googling the gear assembly to purchase when I came upon your video. I wish I saw the video first. Would have saved a lot of time and head scratching. But now I will clean and lube bearings and save the cash. Great video. Stay safe.
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding and concise tutorial, well done young man. This is now on my spring to do list.
Thanks for taking me to school! I really enjoyed the detail of your presentation and how well you relate the information. I really admire your attention to detail and sharing your reasoning for all that you do. You aren't sanctimonious at all, just a professional who has set excellence as his standard. Now it's time for me to get wrenching on my neighbour's '93 Ariens! (May have to head to CT if I find roller bearings, eh?)
PS. ultrajealous of your ultrasonic cleaner... talk about right tool for the right job!
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the kind words!
Looks like my maintenance work pays off. My bloweris now 22 years old and working like a charm.
I fired up my old ass snowthrower the other day.
It's been sitting for two years and it wouldn't move.
It finally moved after being on for almost ten minutes.
Crazy thing is, it's the same exact snowthrower as what's in this video.
I can't wait to try this fix this coming Spring. It only snows, like really snow, around 5 times here and probably need the snowthrower once or twice a year, but man, it's a lifesaver.
Thanks for watching!
@@EliminatorPerformance the fastest gear, I think it's 6th, doesn't even turn the wheels.
I can't wait to open it up and see what's up with it.
Excellent! I have a craftsman snowblower a little bit older than this one. I have been in it a couple of times over the years, most recently to replace the carburetor. I have been paying a lot more attention to it's maintenance lately because I don't think a new one would give me the kind of service this one has. This video has given me the idea that I should take the bottom cover off and inspect the insides. It's been awhile. Thanks again!
Thanks for watching!
Same here. Thk god i can tough put the balance of winter. Dont want or need to drag the machine inside
Excellent Video! I think i have the same problem with my Toro 824xl. You gave me a great way to find out and fix it if it is a seized bearing. The toro looks somewhat similar in design. The drive is locked up just like yours. Thanks and this is the only youtube that i could find that addresses this problem.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video and instructions. Easy to follow and very detailed. Great job! Thanks!
This is a great video, When I took it apart I found that the key on the main axle some how moved and chipped the axle and I had to replace the entire axle $165.00 I am waiting for it. the simtom was the blower won't move forword but will move back. These instruction were very helpful I may not have tackled this without them.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video work showing every detail of the repair
Thanks for watching hdman!
Learning more about them every day
Thank You’ll
Thank you so much for that tutorial. I have a similar machine I believe. a Craftsman. My problem is stays in gear and I see it has a broken spring on the bottom that pulls the plate down so to not engage. Your video helps me a lot. I think mine is about ready for some maintenance.
Great TUTO, mine ( Yard Work Canadian Tire) just seized in the middle of the job and we just had 25 centimeters of snow great...
Will tackle this on january 2 2020.
Thanks for sharing, regards fom Montreal, Quebec.
Happy new year.
Anytime, if the video helps ya out, consider giving me a Google review? It'd help me out big time, thanks for watching!
@@EliminatorPerformance My pleasure,its done.
Thanks again,regards.
This video is so good I believe it may be mankind’s greatest achievement lol! Very well done!
Thanks for watching!
Great Video, I have done this with success many times, wd40 and Carb. cleaned, repeat till all the rust is gone, Then use engine oil followed by grease and you are done. I never had a repeat for years and years.
Thanks for watching!
AVE does a good job of explaining sprag clutches.
Fantastic detail!! This video was critical to giving me the confidence to try and complete this repair, (successfully). Thanks so much for your efforts in creating and sharing this fix.
Nitrile gloves allow you to do this all by hand without getting the grease on your skin. Also, emery cloth works well in place of wire wheel and files.
Yep 👍
Absolutely one of the best produced and informative snowblower repair videos on UA-cam. Thank you very much for your professional work.
Thanks for watching B Baker!
Great video, my bearings are seized I’m going to have to cut them out, I tried heating them up, no luck lol
Very though and clear video 👍👍👍
Super helpful video. Top notch.
Great job, very informative and detailed with all those little tricks. Tks
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your help.
Thanks very much good learning
Very well done.....
Thanx Mike....
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the video, it solved my problem👍
Im reached 7:51 and although mine has a different problem. However by explanation of how it works I can see that I probably need a new belt. Thanks, good video.
Thanks for watching!
you just solved my problem ,,,will do same when warm enough outside
Thanks for watching Kenneth, glad I was able to help!
excellent , smart presentation , thank you

The best way to move an MTD snow blower in Canada is to park it at the end of your driveway and leave it there.
That's a good one. I just picked up an MTD from a neighbor today. He said take it ,it doesn't run. So got it home and in about half an hour got it running. Still a few repairs to be made but a good deal for free.
Only someone lacking any mechanical knowledge would say this about an MTD.
Glad I found this video. Very helpful.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I would have replaced the rubber drive wheel as long as it was at this stage of dis-assembly.
Thanks for watching!
Well done, Thank you..
Thanks for watching Mark!
Thanks you very helpful for me 😊
I hate this snowblower! Have to fix this issue every other year. Last time I replace the needle bearing with a nice japanese sealed bearing with the same ID OD. Hopefully lasts a bit longer.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Smearing grease on everything you think needs it is a great way to create a load of low-speed grinding paste in a lot of places that won't appreciate it.
Thanks for the help much appreciated.
Thanks for watching!
I like to take a picture of stuff before i remove parts..lol 😏 Awesome videos..I nothing about snowblower s..
you covered it all!
Thanks for watching!
thanks so much for the video.. very helpful. only took about 30 min to have it all taken apart and cleaned up and bearings renewed all greased up and good to go now... like and sub'd
Awesome, thanks for watching!
@@EliminatorPerformance lol think i did something wrong.. when i push it forward it moves find but i can hear the gears hitting , also no reverse ? not sure if it had reverse before i took it apart or not ... but im almost certain i have everything back in proper... going to work my 3 days shifts and take it apart again monday... main thing is that everything moves freely now. i will rewatch video when i take it apart to make sure everything is where it should be
Wowo awesome my mechanic wish can find one in Rochester NY. I have Troy built 10 horse Power the gear shaft move into Higher gear because of Vibration I bought it used but it blows snow good.
Wow you did a beautiful job on this video, Move over Donyboy
Thanks man!
You can get those bearings at any bearing supply house. Press out the old, press in the new. Done. No need for new gears unless they are worn out.
Great video quality that could have been half as long without the constant repetition of what you were doing as we were actually watching you do it. I kept waiting for you to clean the drive disc while it was totally exposed with the drive train removed, especially after you had gone into extreme details about the special grease you were using that doesn't run, drip, or sag, which would have eliminated any chance of it getting onto the drive disc after cleaning. Maybe next time. LOL. Keep up the good work, EP.
What about putting in tub of white vinegar and letting them soak and use marine grease on them if they clean up good ???
Yes marine grease works good too just make sure it stays soft at low temps!
So when you installed the plastic flanged bushing on the left side you put it on from the inside of the box and pushed the shaft through but on the right side you put the bushing in from the outside. Is this the correct way to do it or does it not matter? When I changed the plastic bushings in my same machine they were original and both inserted from the outside. I’m just curious if there is a reason for doing it that way? Thanks
Is Phil Wood bearing grease heavy enough for these bearings?
Great video... Thanks. BobC
Thanks for watching Bob!
Snow blowers with rubber tires on them are always always getting stuck again and again . This will happen about every 10 to 15 seconds and then you have to use your entire body weight to overcome the weight of the blower and also the weight of the snow . The rubber tires will helplessly be going around and around . What you really need is a rubber track type snow blower . You will be so so so much farther ahead with those rubber tracks as apposed to round rubber tires because the contact patch is much larger on the rubber track than the tire .
Hey Great Video! I have one tire on but the other will go half way on and wont fit in please help know what I am doing wrong. Thanks
Try rotating it or using some lubrication, they can get rusted after not being removed for a while!
Nice to have the ultrasonic cleaner but an easier way to eliminate the rust and clean the rollers is to soak them in Toilet bowl cleaner..you know the stuff in the funny neck bottles? blue in colour or green..just let the stuff do its magic for 15 minutes, rinse clean and grease..like new!
Never thought of that, could try it out, thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching!
Thank you SO much! Great video. Both my gear bearings were seized. Cleaned them both up, packed them and I am good to go. Thanks again.
Anytime, thanks for watching!
I have a Yard Machine snow blower. I want to easily move it to my shed. Don't know how to unlock wheels to move it properly.Lawrence Humphries
my neighbor just parked one it the end of his driveway, the wheels don't rotate. Can it be saved?
Sure can! Slide it home and grease it up!
Lack of maintenance my ass! Poor freakin design! No home owner is going to grease that as part of maintenance!
Yeah it really is a shame, the views picked up on this video recently, so I'm assuming many people are having this issue.
Will only get worse as time goes on and these snowblowers age.
No one ever oils those bearings until they do that
Well I'm kind of grateful lol this video is picking up more and more views, but it's helping a lot of people out too so it's a win win!
I don't think white lithium spray grease on those gears will help those bearings much. Crappy design
The chute crank handle on my Yardworks 30 inch 365cc powermore (10 year old)is way too low.Don't know what kind of engineers designed that but the guy must have been short.I can barely reach it. I was thinking of welding a piece of rod to make it longer. Yardworks model 31AH65KH515
my snowblower the reverse 1st gear doesn't move, 2nd gear moves very slow. All forward gears are working fine. Any suggestion? thanks
Adjust your shifter rod/cable to make the friction wheel move over more. Simple fix!
Adjust your cables and lubricate pivot points. May need a new wheel drive belt. Check the owners manual for exact instructions. The rubber wheel moving over the spinning friction plate decides speed and direction.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving &;thanks again.. . 🦃🦃🥧🥧🌲🌲🦌
Good video but when stating part numbers instead of saying "O" use the word "zero" for numbers. Just a suggestion to remove confusion.
Solid advice, thanks for the constructive criticism!

if i go through all that work ill replace all the bushing and bearing and not have to worry about it.
These were fine once cleaned and greased!
i flipped mine upright and gas started leaking out of it.. placed it back down , no leak. assuming something in the bowl like an o-ring ?

How do you adjust drive cable on a Honda HS 55 when I put drive handle down it pop's in 3rd gear, only way can do sec and first gear is to man handle it up.Same for reverse gear.help.
can one uses CLR rust remover on parts
Yeah should be ok, not sure if it would get it all off 1st time, but worth the try! I use that stuff on rusted metal Fuel tanks, to get the rut out.
Would you happen to know what part number or size those 2 needle bearings are inside that gear?
From what I've seen, you can't order just the roller bearings, you need to order the whole gear itself. I'll post a link.
Also, you can order the entire Drive Rebuild Kit: Part Number 753-05173A
www.ereplacementparts.com/gear-assembly-1644t-p-319236.html
Thanks for the info. Excellent instructive video!
I've fixed this same issue numerous times on my snowblower.
I'm going to keep searching for those needle bearings and change those in the future instead of buying a whole new sprocket every time.
Thanks for watching! And you shouldn't have to replace the whole gear, as long as you can clean the rust and corrosion off the bearing, it should be fine to grease and reassemble!
I used an Ultrasonic cleaner to clean the 1, and the other 1 I just used brake cleaner I believe.
Do you know the average cost to have this work done at a repair shop?
Depends what their hourly rate is, it's at least a 2hr job and that's if the wheels come off easily and things aren't rusted solid. Plus parts if the bearing can't be salvaged like this one was.
For reference, I charge $60/hr in Ontario Canada.
where are you located
Hey this is a random question but there’s a guy on Craigslist giving this machine away has the issue you described do you think if I split the machine (remove the bucket ) would it fit in a 00 civic coupe ? I’m thinking the bucket in the trunk and I remove the passenger wheel and the motor wheels etc in where the seat was.. does this sound possible or should I just rent a truck
Probably not lol maybe if you too 2 trips?
Help!!! On my friction wheel, if the smallest gear is in place, the wheels won't turn. If I move it aside, then the wheels turn. Put back in place, it won't move again. All gears are complete with no teeth broken. I have wracked my brain and it doesn't make sense to me. What am I doing wrong? Every gear moves until that smallest gear is put back in place. Please advise...
Sounds like the bearing that the small gear meshes to could be seized? Hard to say without me seeing it, sorry I can't be of more help!
@@EliminatorPerformance I did exactly what your video showed.. it was the same bearing wheel as you have shown on here. It didnt make sense to me, so naturally, not liking to get beat by these machines, and not wanting to shovel the snow, I got the bearings unseized... single female and not alot of cash, I am a do-it-myselfer. Many thanks.. question tho.. I seem to have a washer left from the right side bearing area. It is normal to have/need a washer between the gear and the bearing? Its at 25:37 of your video.
@@kathy5939 sometimes they use bearing to take up extra "play" in the shaft. Think of it like limiting side to side movement. If you flip the machine up, and push/pull on the wheel from the side, see how much you can get it to move. You may or may not need it.
Well I owe you $20. Those pin bearings! Where do I send it

Thanks for the video. My machine had the same bearing problem. Watching the video made the repair a breeze.
Awesome, glad to hear it helped out. Thanks for watching Charles!
great video. my Troy bilt has the same issue, i pulled it apart and was able to get the needle bearing numbers off of my bearing races, they are usa made bearings and readily available, Wide gear uses SCE1211 bearing x2, thinner gear on the axle takes bearing SCE1214, hope this helps some people because MTD is really hosing people selling the whole gear, also the bearings easily come out with a press or just a hammer and bearing driver, the bearings price out at under 10 bucks each
good job guy-maintenance saves big headaches/$$$$$
I've got to do the same repair this year. It's 19 years old, and the bearings are finally toast. The video is one of the best "How-To" videos I have ever seen involving small engine repairs. Thank You, and wish me luck!

I have a MTD (Rebranded (Mastercraft)). 10 HP 28 inch. It has two gears with NO roller bearings. A very simple design. I can't understand why they made these transmissions so complicated?
Sweet video! You are very thorough. I have an older mtd. I love it. It was my dad's . It's in mint condition and it's a tank. I'll do your preventative maintenance to the axles soon because I've never done it. Thanks.

Terrific video! I would have been in a world of hurt without your guidance. One thing I'm still stumped by is there seems to be two holes on each side of the housing so the upper axel can be mounted in two different locations. My blower came with the axel mounted in the lower set of holes than what appears in this video. I'm not finding much online. Are you able to clarify why this is?
Some have different size wheels, use whatever holes that puts the machine in the proper position. If it looks wrong it probably is. I mean like the tilt of it.
As an FYI, you can press the bearings out of these gears and press new ones in, instead of replacing the entire gear assembly. The bearing numbers are on the side of the bearing. Usually needle/roller bearing seals wear out. This allows the grease to leak out and water & dirt in. So, cleaning & greasing buys time, but will fail again not too far down the road. Excellent video though, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I’m gonna open mine up this week as it seized and stopped moving while I was cleaning my snow tonight. Is it gonna be the same procedure with power steering as you showed here in this video?
Should be, most MTD snowblowers are built the same, my latest video I just worked on a 4x4 snowblower!
Very informative! Excellent work and nice that you left parts numbers! I don't have this model but I'm confident I got all the info I needed. Thanks! Keep up the great work!
These are my exact symptoms! I'll come back and report on if it works for me.
