Headspace Mari is a perfect version of Mari and is also Sunny’s perception of Mari. When loved ones die, people tend to remember only their best qualities. This is why Sunny sees Mari as this wonderful and cheerful person rather than a perfectionist who put a lot of pressure on him
Speaking of the child-like aspect, notice how there's what sounds like a xylophone, duet-ing with the piano. Sunny has one (the one he puts away in the boxes when doing the house chores), presumably gifted by the family for Sunny to play /learn some music with his sister. Now I'm sad 🥲
We can’t always spare or flee in Undertale, we can’t do it to Undyne the Undying and we can’t do it to Sans and we can’t do it to Asgore or Flowey after we beat Sans, and it’s for the same reason: the child we control has come too far and come to believe that they are a demon. I love how this song sounds a lot like "Playing Forever" as if Sunny is just deluding himself into thinking that Mari is there, and able to still talk to him despite the obvious truth that she very much isn't....
The DETAILS, MAN!!! I love the way Omori and Basil become Angry for a split second before turning into Afraid young Sunny and Basil, which are both completely new Afraid sprites, I should say. But yeah, that angry part perfectly resembles Sunny before he...
if i'm not wrong you saw the same video as me cuz is the only one where you can see the fight, i'm pretty sure the angry emotion was because of Basil's Vent follow up because Basil's Follow-ups are giving both Omori & Basil an Emotion (Comfort applies Happy, Mull applies Sad & Vent applies Anger)
This isn't a true representation of Mari guys, it's a figment of Sunny's ideas and perception of his older sister. Remember that Sunny didn’t fight with her for no reason, she was putting a lot of pressure on him as a perfectionist and made him feel cornered. But because Sunny carries so much guilt and trauma over what happened, as the years go by he sees Mari as a complete innocent, a perfect entity of grace on the planet who Sunny and Basil then ruthlessly cut down for no reason. And if your takeaway here is "Mari was literally perfect and only wanted to help us, but OMORI and Basil are attacking her :(((", then you clearly haven't been paying attention to the game's story and themes *Edit:* Fellas, you're kinda getting into victim blaming territory... Mari didn't *deserve* to die just for being a perfectionist. I'm just trying to say she wasn't perfect skdhdosjd
@@g-knux The funny and sad thing is that I'm not even an Omori fan, I've never played the game or seen a full playthrough. I wouldn't even call myself all that smart or perceptive. But even I was able to pick up on this basic fact, just by paying attention to secondhand internet discussions surrounding the game's story (as it was unavoidable for a time). Hell, just seeing that she's rendered with that purple hue that's indicative of Sunny's fictionalized friends in the dream world should be an obvious indicator that this version of Mari isn't real. You dont even need to be smart, you just need to have basic critical thinking skills that you learn when you're like in the first grade lol
This “boss” theme feels so innocent and happy, unlike the angered, unhappy bad tempered boss themes, this one feels like a cold winter day in a warm cabin with your friends, drinking hot cocoa and smiling together.. A truly wonderful masterpiece of a game. I love Omori.
I sat there in my chair for 20+ minutes because I refused to attack her. I didn’t want to. When I finally did she smiled and then healed the whole party and that’s as just salt in the wound
The dock scene in the true route + the Branch Coral's dialogue about Sunny's grief "cursing [Mari] with an undying soul" and "it is her nature to leave and protect" imply that Mari's ghost is the one who added this "boss fight." Sunny is in a terribly fragile state. She heals and calms him down to prepare him to face his Truth. But, as always, he cracks under pressure and runs away.
Everyone here is like "Man, I feel bad for fighting Mari. She's so sweet and innocent, and all she does is give Omori and Basil fruit to enjoy." But notice that whenever she uses her fruit picnic "attack", it's impossible for you to avoid it. Because of this, I like to imagine that Mari's fruit picnic "attack", in reality, is her grabbing the boys by the neck, and *forcefully* shoving fruit down their throats with a passive-aggressive smile. And the boys are more scared of her than anything else they faced in Boss Rush. Basil (in tears): "MARI PLEASE STOP I DONT WANT ANYMORE MELONS, I DONT WANT MORE MELONS I BEG YOU" Mari (very softly): "Then you shouldn't have fucking hung my corpse from the tree. Open wide, you little _shit_ ." Basil: *terrified choking noises*
When I got to this part, the background gave me PTSD of Perfectheart and I suddenly went "Aw fuck, I am SCREWED." It didn't help that it started off so easy, with Mari not even attacking. It felt like she was preparing you for something (heh). For the first few turns, I kept saying to myself: "Alright, when does the twist come into play? Where's the part where she'll catch me off guard?" A couple turns later, it happened. I was ready for it, and wasn't frightened at all at first. Then I realized the context of the situation...
Everyone in the comments talking about what the background means etc and meanwhile me on the verge of tears with the unreal amount of nostalgia this is giving me - songs like this make me think of happier times when I was a little kid so this song just made my heart melt. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
I wanna see a Mari-modded fight that includes a final bossfight instead of "SOMETHING" that comes after you kill her in the first phase. One that constantly puts AFRAID on him, and attacks that come in the form of his own team turning on him as they find out the truth - which is what Sunny fears the most. Then he has to run for his life even in headspace.
Yesterday my little cousin looked at the screen of my when i was listening to this and said: "She's so pretty. When I grow up, I wanna be like her." Trust me buddy. It's not worth it.
I (an only child) said that if I had siblings I'd strive to be a big sis like mari and then the realisation hit spoilers!!!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - so did the broken violin and stairs
The way this battle played out is how Sunny views what happened; Omori even says as much in the final boss fight! (Of course it was actually a stupid accident caused by Sunny and Mari both being immature kids, but guilt doesn't see such nuance.)
Hero love her and you killed her Aubrey love her and you killed her Kel love her and you killed her Basil love her and you killed her You love her and you killed her EVERYONE LOVE HER AND YOU KILLED HER
I have a feeling I hear lyrics of this theme. Something about sweet and peaceful. I mean for real, I feel like I hear lyrics, but words are unclear, but I feel what it is all about and I can't help, but feel so nice
I went into this thinking "oh dear it's perfect heart all over again," then she gave out fruit; what a battle. Makes me wish Basil and Omori could have gone on more excursions...
I think that the music is incredibly well designed in this game. This song is a happy waltz, using instruments that sound very cheerful. However, it's also sneakily nostalgic and melancholy. The final duet is the same way! It SOUNDS happy, but there's just more to it! This song specifically, the instruments remind me of toy pianos that I played with as a child- I think a lot of people would recognize this sound for the same reason. It plays into innocence and nostalgia. Pure bliss. The melody is playful, but still uses a lot of minor notes and a downward scale progression, which brings in the tinge of sadness. The absolute best way to describe this song is bittersweet, and it really translates even to people who lack context. Sorry for the long reply but this really interested me to think about. Good brain food yum yum yum yum.
All of the tragic and twisted lore of the game aside, this theme reminds me a lot of a warm picnic on a autumn day especially with the basket Mari is holding, like it's a silent gesture of her inviting you. Pretty good song tho :>
My theory is that this mari is the same MARI from the docks, but since this is hikkomori route, she doesn't show up there, so the other time spirit mari can remind sunny of the truth is here, in the boss rush, sure he cannot go back, but she can still ask if he remembers, evene if there is no remembrance of that other than the transformation
the way the vines from basil's attack looked like ropes to reference basil hanging Mari was a really interesting and small detail. OMOCAT was really smart with that idea
I legit just finished boss rush with Basil a few hours ago and I’ve heard that Mari is the worst boss in the entire game. So once I finally defeated the trio, I saw Mari and when this song played, at first I thought that it was like a “looks can be deceiving” thing. But when she wasn’t attacking, I knew that something was wrong… And the second phase proved me right…
The music is so sad. It makes you truly miss her. She doesn't even hurt you. And then it triggers Sunny's trauma and it turns into the most unsettling thing into the game.

@@bruhpoop5168
"Can you really call that living?"
Headspace Mari is a perfect version of Mari and is also Sunny’s perception of Mari. When loved ones die, people tend to remember only their best qualities. This is why Sunny sees Mari as this wonderful and cheerful person rather than a perfectionist who put a lot of pressure on him
And also because her death was Sunny’s fault so he turns that into “Mari was perfect and I’m a monster” (see also: fear Polaroids)
Mari boss battle ost sounds so calm and childlike , bcs mari is a sweet person to everyone

This has to be the most heartwrenching Boss Fight. MARI doesn't fight, she just keeps healing us. And we cannot spare her or flee like in Undertale.
We can’t always spare or flee in Undertale, we can’t do it to Undyne the Undying and we can’t do it to Sans and we can’t do it to Asgore or Flowey after we beat Sans, and it’s for the same reason: the child we control has come too far and come to believe that they are a demon. Ironically, Sunny and Mari’s fight could have sorely used the Undertale ACT menu and then we wouldn’t be in a no spare situation. But both kids were stressed out and so couldn’t use any of their skills so the only option was to FIGHT!
this battle physically pains me, especially how she doesn’t even throw hands and just gives you fruit. such a mari thing to do :sob:
Everybody gangsta until you realize the OST is like her theme and My time’s instrumental merged
doesnt really contain much of my time except for the weird flute parts and music box. the little 'dun chord chord' is also in duet, not just my time. the 'dun chord chord' seems to be in the key of "By Your Side", not duet nor my time. ive never listened for the 'dun chord chord' in normal by your side tho so yeah. sorry for the bad explaination, i dont know the proper terms
soo after buying the console edition, I have to go to the hikiomori route to hear this, and man it sucks to go on that route again after completing the true end. it sucks. it hurts, and this fight is the worse of it all
she's right there, smiling at you, and just like teasing you, she won't fight back.
and just like a sister, she'll help you, even if you hurt her
the hikiomori rote is like"yeah sure we're going to forget all of these and move on!"
but no, the guilt is still there.
and also , I hope this is a real boss fight, the the plot is like
if you choose run away from Mari here, you won't move on, and stay in this fantasy called "dream World "
if you fight Mari here, you'll break the fantasy and go on to reality
but still, this game is still the best rpg game I've ever played, and it still makes me cry

I thought Mari's fight was an actual fight, with her unique ability in this boss rush as an emotion resetter, hindering your ability to take advantage of the emotion triangle.

I love how this song sounds a lot like "Playing Forever" as if Sunny is just deluding himself into thinking that Mari is there, and able to still talk to him despite the obvious truth that she very much isn't....
genius! i didnt make that connection at first but yeah in terms of the songs...cheoreoghrophy?? (my spelling is awesome) it sounds familiar
Just letting you know, Basils Vines have the texture of Rope during this fight.
oh...
The fact that the background view is like heaven explains it all.
So I noticed something while listening to this. The piano in the background plays the exact same notes as MY TIME at a different speed and pitch
Its a waltz
its a different key. final duet uses it aswell, i call it 'dun chord chord'
Wait really? oh.
Ohhh... thats the angers about..
Regardless, using Vent is a perfect way to transition phases
This isn't a true representation of Mari guys, it's a figment of Sunny's ideas and perception of his older sister. Remember that Sunny didn’t fight with her for no reason, she was putting a lot of pressure on him as a perfectionist and made him feel cornered. But because Sunny carries so much guilt and trauma over what happened, as the years go by he sees Mari as a complete innocent, a perfect entity of grace on the planet who Sunny and Basil then ruthlessly cut down for no reason. And if your takeaway here is "Mari was literally perfect and only wanted to help us, but OMORI and Basil are attacking her :(((", then you clearly haven't been paying attention to the game's story and themes
*Edit:* Fellas, you're kinda getting into victim blaming territory... Mari didn't *deserve* to die just for being a perfectionist. I'm just trying to say she wasn't perfect skdhdosjd
Wow an actual smart omori fan
this is what ive been thinking about but no one agreed with me so i thought i was dumb
In conclusion, Headspace Mari is made out to be perfect to hide the fact that Realworld Mari was a perfectionist.
@@pickles4613 i thought it was just cuz sunny felt so bad about killing mari that his image of her slowly morphed into absolute perfection

Omori is a masterpiece fr. The symbolism on this “fight” and the end is both sad and amazing
In the beginning it sounds a little like my time, and then there’s the by your side leitmotif too. Awesome job Bo en
Basil (in tears): "MARI PLEASE STOP I DONT WANT ANYMORE MELONS, I DONT WANT MORE MELONS I BEG YOU"

This song activated my fight or flight response and I didn't even know what was going to happen
When I got to this part, the background gave me PTSD of Perfectheart and I suddenly went "Aw fuck, I am SCREWED."
It didn't help that it started off so easy, with Mari not even attacking. It felt like she was preparing you for something (heh). For the first few turns, I kept saying to myself: "Alright, when does the twist come into play? Where's the part where she'll catch me off guard?"
A couple turns later, it happened.

Lmao you’re right
As somebody who has never played Omori and only knows the basic plot...
why am I crying?
Because you know the basic plot
imagine if the ultimate was sunny pushing mari down the stairs lmao

I cannot be the only person who hears the start of My Time during some segments, can I?
The piano notes are very identical to my time's yeah
The hikikomiri route is such a cruel joke, and one Sunny played on himself.
the music has the same vibe as “its just a burning memory but its happy”
All of the tragic and twisted lore of the game aside, this theme reminds me a lot of a warm picnic on a autumn day especially with the basket Mari is holding, like it's a silent gesture of her inviting you. Pretty good song tho :>
can't listen to this without feeling miserable
My theory is that this mari is the same MARI from the docks, but since this is hikkomori route, she doesn't show up there, so the other time spirit mari can remind sunny of the truth is here, in the boss rush, sure he cannot go back, but she can still ask if he remembers, evene if there is no remembrance of that other than the transformation
the way the vines from basil's attack looked like ropes to reference basil hanging Mari was a really interesting and small detail. OMOCAT was really smart with that idea
>Basil can't move
>Basil somehow moves and uses photograph
"the sun shined brighter when she was here"
I legit just finished boss rush with Basil a few hours ago and I’ve heard that Mari is the worst boss in the entire game. So once I finally defeated the trio, I saw Mari and when this song played, at first I thought that it was like a “looks can be deceiving” thing. But when she wasn’t attacking, I knew that something was wrong…
And the second phase proved me right…
She really hit you with that emotional damage
This theme is making me cry.
Irony of her sprite and backround with this cheerful music it hurts more of such events
I love how you can hear the start of My Time at the end
Her boss theme reminds me of an series called 'The Good Place' for some reason 😭 I wish this was on spotify..
The music is so sad. It makes you truly miss her. She doesn't even hurt you. And then it triggers Sunny's trauma and it turns into the most unsettling thing into the game.
This music is Heartwretching
She wasn't actually perfect but it's still so sad
I was expecting mari to be an actual threat..
