  • Changing the color of your interior can be done in several ways, and in this video, I show you how to paint vinyl and leather. With just a few bucks for a can of paint, painting your seats, door panels, or other interior pieces can be pretty simple. By following a few simple tips and tricks, the final product can look good and last a long time. On the contrary, if some of these are not followed, it will look like a pile of trash and not last long at all.
Changing the color of carpet or cloth (velour) seats can be done with a Dye like RIT, which can be sponged or sprayed on. However, for this occasion, we're dealing with changing the color of a Leather that will be treated the same way as we do the vinyl.
First, make sure the surface you are treating/painting is free of dirt, debris, and contaminants. Warm water and dish soap is always a great general cleaner. Once clean, ensure that the surface is thoroughly dried. Be sure to tape off any areas that you don't want to be painted. As a final prep before painting, wipe the entire area with a Wax & Grease Remover (this can be purchased at a paint supplier), or you can use Isopropyl Alcohol as well.
Now that you're ready for paint, I can't stress enough that you have to use light coats. You'll be tempted to cover everything with paint right out of the gate like I did, but don't do it. Make the first coat a very light dust coat. You're literally just building tack coats for the next coats to stick to. In fact, it may be 3+ coats before all the area is covered. Let the coats dry to a uniform color before applying the next coat. We applied at least 3 coats to this convertible top cover, and we achieved great uniform coverage and something that will last for years without rubbing off.
The reason I recommend the Dupli Color brand is because it etches the material you're working with well. It is one of few manufactures that is an acetone dye which allows it to bite into the vinyl surface well.

*It all depends on prep! Especially if you add Adhesive promoter*

I also have a '68 DeVille convertible, and I used the dupicolor vinyl/fabric paint on my dash and door panels. It looked great at first but after about a year the door panels started to chip. The dash still looks great 4 years later, but I think the door panels have chipped because of use. I think this paint is great for parts that wont be touched, like a dashboard, but when people lean on the door panels and lightly press on them when they get in and out of the car, the paint is a little too brittle and starts to come off the panel. Just my two cents. Always lookin out for another caddy owner. Keep up the good work.

Smooth even strokes brother. No offense but that’s exactly how your NOT supposed to spray paint 😅 search a few “how to spray paint” videos and then apply that to every painting project do.
