Shortly before the events of Cataclysm, an exiled noble had retaken Durnholde Keep and its surrounding area, declaring himself de facto King of Lordaeron as told in the preceding campaign Lordaeron's Legacy. After retaking a slice of the former Kingdom he has now styled himself as King Candor, a move which has proven unpopular with many in the Alliance. In this period of great unrest there are many heroes and villains trying to survive, claim power, or just do what they believe is right.

Hey folks Footman16/Besregar here the campaign maker here to offer some more insights behind the scenes and hopefully respond to some comments!
So first off, yes King Candor is Heisenberg from Breaking Bad, which also partly explains the bad audio quality to his lines since they're extracted from the TV show audio and so might have some weird compression/background noise going on.
The whole idea of this mission was a split focus, with one group fighting their way down the central lane (as Jay did towards the end) with lots of encounters and opportunities to gain free units if you explore down the side alleys whilst another group defends the base. The Forsaken and Horde attacks basically serve as an invisible timer as they will eventually overcome your allies and you will lose the mission and I did extensive testing on the attack waves and how long it takes them to break through so if you don't aid them at all you have around 30 minutes. That said part of the idea is that you can divert some resources to their defence to help give you more time; if you aid the outlying bases you will get more time but if you invest too many resources in them you will fall behind as you need to maintain progress towards the enemy Val'kyr Aradne at the end. In this way I sought to create a cool mission where the player can influence their time as well as try lots of different strategies and this map was tested with lots of different strategies in mind such as mass gunships vs mass devotees vs helping your allies vs rushing down the central lane etc so when people talk of "map-maker" syndrome and one single "correct" way of playing it does make me a little sad as I did earnestly try to create missions with different ways to play and win.
In this map where I can see the fundamental mistake is in the intro cutscene the whole idea of the map is not conveyed explicitly enough. When I get round to updating the campaign based on Jay's great playthrough I'll definitely seek to make the intro more explicitly i.e. (Thassarian will say we will hold the sides, Candor will say I must fight my way through the central lane whilst defending but can't waste forces on the side lanes etc) and I also might make the unit powering the forcefield more uniform as I see Jay got a little confused when what I mean to convey was that you should try and kill everything along the central path and not everything on the map as the Forsaken bases are designed to be impenetrable.
In my philosophy and part of my ideas for missions is that the player should not get "comfortable" the player should always be kept on their toes (in certain missions) and have to make choices in terms of how they want to play. If a player is able to get comfortable then the mission becomes too easy in my view and that sweet spot between easy and frustrating i.e. satisfying challenge hasn't been reached. I realise now that Lordaeron's Legacy set a bad example in terms of towering where as Lordaeron's Destiny tries to put an emphasis on both defending with towers and units whilst simultaneously exploring and completing objectives such as in this mission and in the Plague Cauldron mission. I see people asking about expansions a lot and in some of my missions expansions are provided however, if you give the player an expansion it is difficult to tune the difficulty around it since you don't know when the player will take the expansion or how many resources the player will have and you fall into the real map-maker syndrome of where the player MUST take the expansion early otherwise find themselves severely outmatched with not enough resources. Part of my inspiration was missions like "The Culling" where you can't sit in your base and you don't get the chance to get "comfortable" or " stable" instead you have to be constantly moving out trying to complete the main objective whilst also defending your base, I see now that perhaps there are certain elements of the maps that could be tweaked or altered to try and make this more clear and to make the player feel more at ease pushing out and keeping a pace rather than feeling like they have to play defensively which will guarantee defeat such as in this mission.
Also yeah the side objective in this mission probably does seem a little off and I should probably change it, reduce the number of the Val'kyr and have maybe all of them except one or two on the main path and also have it so when one dies a map wide stun gets applied to the Forsaken would maybe be a more useful reward as it would extend the invisible timer of the Forsaken attacks.
Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed Jay's playthrough so far and his insights into how some people might approach and play the maps and I'll hope to implement some of the comments and feedback I've received so far on these videos. Keep up the great work Jay and I look forward to seeing the next part!
    All the best,
    Footman16

Imagine if Candor wasn't OP or if he didn't have the healing item...
I imagine "mapmaker syndrome" also happens if one other person tests the map over and over until he/she doesn't remember how it was before knowing everything

To be fair to the map: In the intro KING Candor did say that he will attack through the CENTRAL path, the one you went to at the end there.
Also since you never went to check I wonder if the Horde coming from the west has a base or is it just spawned? If they have a base you could destroy it and make life a lot easier.

    • @Neyuun
      @Neyuun 4 дні тому +4

No base, just spawn in. You can also mitigate that by just making a bunch of towers right on the spawn point though.

Am I crazy or does Candor sound a LOT like Walter White from Breaking Bad? Like when he's really into the Heisenberg voice.

What a crazy mission, everyone channel your inner Arkain energy to give strength to Big J \o/
By the way are those horde attacks spawned? If they have a base, maybe an early Candor strike force could take them out of the picture given how much both heroes can accomplish on their own

Based on the few times you selected the allied Gunships; I am pretty sure that the note about Gunships geting masonry upgrades instead of melee(heavy) armor upgrade is wrong( melee since when you checked your own they did not have any armor one when you had leather armor); the tooltip of gunships also does not say that. So this probably a mistake in the note.
I also guess that the gyrocopter upgrades could be useful since you summon normal gyrocopter with timed life, but they are gyrocoptors so probably not. You understand far more about WC3 units than myself.
Also at the beginning the positions of the main and optionals are pinged once( should probably be done once a minute or three), based on that you could kinda guess where your were supposed to go. Which is something a viewer sees and has the time to notice but a played probably not at the beginning of a new map when they are trying to orient themselves.
And I understood the intro as "some structure in vicintiy of the walls is responsible for them(of course on your not on their side), we do not know which of those structures close to the force walls exactly." This should totally be more clear, since that was originally more a guess than any knowledge.

I totally think this map needs a rework. It is very unreasonable to hold all of this off with just one gold mine and no ability to cut off attack waves from the horde

This campaign looks fun, but it's clear the map maker expects you to do very precise thing in a specific order, and if you don't your severely punished for it. Plus they need to give you more gold mines

This is a pretty tough map with a lot of things happening at once! And hearing Jay's commentary get more deranged as the map goes on is really entertaining!
To be fair to the mapmaker, Candor did say in the starting cutscene that he would attack through the middle. Otherwise yeah it seems this map was designed to be completed in a very specific way that is not immediately clear.
I think the way the map is intended to be completed is that you defend against the Horde reinforcements, while you race your way up through the middle before the Undead can take down the allied bases. But most players would probably do what Jay did and just spam towers everywhere first, without realising you can more or less attack the middle immediately with 1 or more of your Heroes since you do get allied reinforcements as you push your way up.

After Lordaeron fell, the last surviving alliance leader, Grand Marshal Garithos was a human supremacist and hated elves.
His actions and the growing desperation of the elves without the sunwell, lead them to break away from the alliance, forming the blood elves allied with the horde.
Not all elves though as you can see elves with Candor

I love jays vids, but I never understand why he doesn't scout. Like, just send some of those summoned fighters to get an idea of the strengths of enemy bases. Like, how strong is the horde base in the NW? Are there deathbases like the ine in the north where your not supposed to push.

you have air yet all you do is classic ground battle, that is the main hint, take down air first, take down the south as you have shinny sign from start at the place to go first, not the northern undead base but the south east base
