Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
I lived in Kensington in 2007 my mom started using herion and she wasn’t even the type to do drugs she a smoke weed once in a blue moon but noting eles. We was going through a lot living there we barely had money to eat, house filed with thousands of roaches and rats, it was Definitely a struggle. Is like if you live in Kensington and you dont got it like that your gonna end up on drugs. Kensington was set up to failed from the beginning luckily I got out of that hell hole

It's ok to have some healthy fun like football, drugs shouldn't be the only issue.

Because America is a free country. One is free to make good choices and become a doctor or a fireman, or one can make terrible choices and deal and use drugs. These people literally do not want help, otherwise they would walk into the local NA meeting and start reading the NA book. It is illegal to force these people clean.
Growing up I witnessed way too much of this in Philly.
I lived there in the early 90s - it was relatively clean, well compared to this. Why are they all concentrated in this area, does anybody know? WHY KENSINGTON??? Is there some decriminalization zone?
@@trelaw1527 from what I understand, they call it an open air market. Maybe the users can basically use in that area with no caution. Not sure about the dealers. They may have to be discreet. It sucks regardless. These ppl had no idea they were gonna end up like this. It is ruining ppl so fast, the dealers I hope feel like shit bags. Its amazing how much money addicts can make in a day, compared to regular job workers. Damn.
It's for things like this that I love small towns!

I have lived in 3 small towns in my life. 650 people. 500 people and 14,000 people. The two smallest didn't have any homeless.
The larger one may have had a few but they were taken care of by local charities and government assistance.
Hidden away? That is the most ignorant thing I've ever read.
We are very concerned about the existence of drug crimes and we hope that the authorities can immediately deal with it

I really love the guys in the wheelchairs using their legs to move themselves along. Takes more strength than just actually walking. Bet they are getting some form of disability to pay for their addiction, pretending to need a wheelchair. Someone said to me the other day that people need to get a job, I responded that people actually need to get a conscience. That's the first step. And the national minimum wage should have been raised years ago. A living wage is not the minimum wage. You can't live on it. People are dying because of this.

It’s situations like this that show you the real side of the US government and police agencies. So you mean to tell me you have droves of people out here easily visible abusing drugs, yet you can’t manage to clean this up? Also, what about the drug dealers? You mean to tell me you can’t easily catch them in the act of selling this crap to someone, I mean they would have to stand out like a sore thumb as, as they will probably be the only person in that given area who can stand up straight. Fact is, they allow this to go on, yet will pick and pull, search, and split hairs in every other situation to find a reason to shoot and kill or arrest innocent people during simple interactions and traffics stops. Want to find someone to arrest and do some actual good?? GO HERE!
