    Sorry for the lack of fish in the past two videos, folks! Heh. Here is video number one of my collaboration with Tim Galati and First State Fishing. And just a *"FYI"* -- a 28 inch Walleye is equivalent to ~8lbs and 10 years old!!! Ain't that crazy?! Make sure to always release the trophies to preserve the genetics!!! As Lee Wulff once said: _"The finest gift you can give to any fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"_ Release the big ones, and eat what is in-between! Selective harvest at its best!

      I know it sounds terrible and i know catch and release strengthens the bloodline and means more trophy fish but, to be completely honest i probably would have eaten it. Hate me if you want, just being honest. I would have filleted that sucker up , dug out the cheek meat and turned the rest into stew.

    • @mangaosuman
      @mangaosuman 6 років тому

      @beast man It really depends on the body of water. In lake Erie dnr have said to take out walleye 26 inches plus. Me personally if it was 30+ i'd put it back. Now out of a local reservoir, I wouldn't take anything out 24 inches or bigger.

    • @beastman2513
      @beastman2513 6 років тому

      mangaosuman ,true. I fish oneida lake and theres tons of walleye there . If i caught that fish there it would have been dinner, but depending on how many walleye ( or any fish) are in the body of water im fishing does play a factor in whether i keep it or not.

    Leo, you are TOTALLY RIGHT!! At this time of year, it's important to let the big females go and lay their eggs. From everything I've ever read and heard, the males outnumber them at least 2 to 1. "Selective Harvest" is VERY important - both at this time of year, and at ANY time of year. Well Done, friend!!

    Nice catches! For future reference don't hold a fish up by the gills if you plan on releasing it, especially the big ones. They aren't made to be supported like that. Instead support with both hands holding under the bottom.

    Leo, I have a general fish question that came to mind when the giant walleye was caught. Are all fish species indeterminate in size, i.e, they keep on growing as they get older, or some species are determinate and others indeterminate. If it is an either / or, what makes the difference in the DNA? I'm just curious.

    It seems to me that on all of these channels (not to pick on yours) the fish stay out of the water inordinately long. The process of posing, taking pictures, etc, while great for the camera, isn't great for the fish. Why not find a system where the fish is never out of the water more than five seconds? It just seems that what has now become a ritual on every youtube fishing channel isn't in the best interest of the fish, and by extension, in the best interest of the sport. Just a thought...

    • @extremephillyfishing
      @extremephillyfishing  6 років тому +3

      In a perfect fishing world, every catch would be released in the water. And all anglers would practice selective harvest; and also wet their hands before handling any fish. Folks would be knowledgeable about environmental conservation and aquatic sustainability. And everyone would be able to identify the different Species that they catch, and know about their levels of sensitivity and mortality ratio after being handled. Sadly, the world is not as perfect! And that applies especially in the filming+wildlife industry. As far as one records, photos, or even archives a sample from a specific body of water, that fish will irrefutably suffer more than usual! However, even though fish handling practices are not perfect, that is not to say that the traumatizing experience will not benefit the fish in the future. As far as the handling is kept to a minimum and the fish is released before it reaches anoxia levels, it will eventually become stronger in the future (the Nietzsche mentality).
      Mind you...I am not using this argument as an excuse for us UA-camr anglers. I am just saying that if one is TRULY concerned about fish and wildlife, then it is better to not mess with them at all. It is better to not fish for them at all. It is better to not hook them and give them a traumatizing experience, on top of giving them extra lactic acid build in their bodies. If one fishes already, and on top of that -- the same films...?! All you can do is do your best to minimize losses.
      By the way...I touched upon this topic just recently in one of my videos (the Florida recap one). And I do encourage EVERYONE out there to be a better angler than I am, especially when it comes to safe fish handling.

      Damn...A Nietzsche reference. Gotta appreciate that! And the point on fishing in general is well taken. Not fishing at all would be the ideal solution. I fish and therefore am part of the problem. But I have noticed across the channels that there comes a moment where I start to cringe because the fish has simply been out of the water for what to me seems an awfully long time. In your case, I particularly appreciate the documentation (Latin names, specific identification techniques, etc.) and I know that demands more handling to achieve. But I guess I'd like everyone producing these channels (that I watch more than I should because I enjoy the vicarious catching) could find a way to get the "money shot" faster and the fish back in the water in under, say twenty seconds. We could also talk about the edited out gut hooks :) but that's for another time... Anyway, as always, thanks for engaging intelligently with your viewers. You do a great job and you are without a doubt the most interesting channel out there.
