  • Hi Buddies,
So you have a pet bird,
most parakeet owners will have difficulties with taming and making their birds trust them
OR taking them outside the cage
and sometimes even bringing them back into the cage without losing their bird's trust.

I let out my budgies even though they are not fully tamed. I don’t chase them to get back into their cage, I let them fly around and chill in my room for as long as they want to. If they get hungry or they want to go back into their cage, they will fly in by themselves. 😊

I haven't watched the video yet so he might have already mentioned this, but if you can't get 2 cages then it might be best to get one bird, train it, then get another bird. After the first bird is trained you can let it out of its cage for while your training the second bird, but still constantly supervising it. If the birds are in the same cage they will distract each other, and if you get them at the same time it will take much longer, bc they might gang together and decide you can't be trusted, but if you get one at a time then there will be a already trusting/tamed bird helping convince the untrained bird that your safe.
It is still either way much better to get 2 cages, incase one of them might be suffering and it might need to be in quarantine.
This is coming from someone who has no bird but who has done *hours* of researching, and talking with a bird owner about the subject.

Thank you for your very good and educative video! My pet canary birds go back to their cage mostly immediately when I ask them to. I have trained them to go back to cage since they were young by asking them to go back by saying to them "to cage", or "cage" or both by asking them "to cage" and showing by hand motion them to go to the cage. I think this method might also work for budgies, but it has to be taught to them when they are young. My canaries follow hand motion signs along with talked requests by me, which I use with them daily when communicating with them.

I’ve trained 3 budgies now that where all aviary raised and I never kept them inside their cages till they were tame. I used the method that you showed by putting millet in the cage and then I would step away so the birds could fly in without fearing me. It worked every time. Now my budgies are tame and have learned recall but if your budgie isn’t tame you can use this method. Don’t keep the poor little bird confined in a tiny cage until it have learned to trust you. You can do a lot of off hands training till the bird gets comfortable around you

I also have 3 budgies that live in an aviary! I did it a similar way, just kind of hanging around in the cage but away from them for a month or 2, until eventually they got comfortable to take food out of my hand (were treated bad in previous home and weren't very trusting of people which is why it took so long). Now they don't even need to see food to sit on my hand or shoulder, and they trust me heaps (I still give them treats when they step up). When I had to put one in a cage because he was sick, I let him sit on one hand eating a treat and gently picked him up with the other. He didn't particularly like it, but after a few times of doing it irregularly he doesn't mind too much anymore :)

I've had my pet parakeet, Flapjack, since December of 2022. This is my first time owning a bird and the only pets I have taken care of are cats, fish, and rats. Currently, it's just three cats and Flapjack. Even though I've never had a bird there are some things as a pet owner you pick up on such as giving them space in the begining. I got Flapjack from a pet store so I knew it would be tough and take longer than usual to gain their trust and yet I still worry.
I've tried to keep myself calm and that with time and effort some day Flapjack and I can be best buds, but I'm starting to worry and I freak out over the thought of failure. But I don't want to give up on trying I'm just really bad at doing the whole once every day thing.
I have made a few mistakes like letting Flapjack out of their cage I will admit, I'm not proud of it, and, not on purpose, making them freak out and fly around in their cage. I feel like everything I do makes it worse.
As of this moment, I can hand-feed them by holding a small piece of spray millet in my fingers or even some seeds. I understand a few body language cues such as puffed feathers or standing on one foot.
I'm a sophomore in high school who is usually burnt out from school when I get home. I try my best with talking to Flapjack but I never know what to say, my mind goes blank. Other times I'm ranting to Flapjack. I sing to them sometimes or read a book, although I haven't done that for a few months.
I've made sure Flapjack has everything they need in a cage.
Some other things I want to mention either because I don't know what it means or if it might help are that Flapjack would bite at his hammock (that's what I call it might be called something else) made of seagrass. Flapjack used to bite through them so much I had to keep getting more but then they stopped for a while and started again recently.
(Flapjack also lives in my room with me)
Flapjack sometimes will stand on their perch and flap their wings a lot. I also have a black sheet that goes around to cage for when it's time to go to bed.
Compared to when I first got Flapjack to now, there is a huge difference. I just was hoping anyone who knew more about birds could help with my problem. I hope to be able to pet and hold Flapjack.
Have I already lost Flapjack's trust for good? I deeply appreciate any advice/help.

I relate to what you are going through. She’s my first bird and I feel like I keep making mistakes and that the potential for trust is gone. I hope we both can gain their trust though!

    • @BlueSun57
      @BlueSun57 11 місяців тому +3

I totally relate, I’m also a sophomore and a bird owner I used to have two budgies, but one of them, Tweety, passed away recently. Tweety trusted me enough to sit on my finger and relaxed when I sat by their cage. Sweety (my other budgie) and I don’t have a relationship yet. She is very shy and nervous and has had some traumatic experiences of being let out of the cage by accident.
Recently I’ve started to train her now that she is so lonely, and I’ve just been sitting by her cage until she relaxes. Eventually I plan to place my hand on top of the cage, and then once she is used to that I will start to put my hand inside.
It is difficult to train a bird after worrying that you have broken its trust, but I think that since parakeets are so social and need love, they will bond over time if we are willing to have patience. Hope this helps and good luck with Flapjack 👍👍

Separating your birds ONLY while taming is a smart move, that's how they won't distract each other and you'll get results much faster.
Just don't forget to put them back together after each session of taming.

I have 4 rescue budgies and Surprise when I mistook an egg ready to hatch for a dis and the next morning a food bowl chirped at me (we replaced all food bowls with silo feeders). Well my oldest Sunny (7-9 years old) came to us after being in 3 other homes and cannot fly we assume from poor food and being kept her whole life in a small finch cage. She finally learned that me picking her up wasn’t going to kill her ad we hang out whenever she feels like it(I have also made ladders and bridges for her to get anywhere she wants to and is never trapped on the floor. My other three rescues came together after their owner died, Mr. Sinatra, Ava and Marilyn, and are still fearful of being touched or handled but they are free to explore and fly around and always return to their cage. Sinatra flies the most the 2 ladies both have maroon eyes like my cockatiel and seem to have similar eye issues, Ava's seem better than Marilyn's, Marilyn rarely leaves the cage unless they startle her, once on the floor Marilyn tries to fly back to cage but has no lift. I think this is because she’s a pudgie budgie and because of not being able to see well to exercise and the fact Sinatra likes to feed her all the time she has become a chonker. I let all of them just do their thing and they are happy, chirpy little birds, now then baby Surprise(not even 6 months old yet, he’s Sinatra and Ava's baby) is a total jerk, lol. He's the one I figured I’d have the best chance of befriending but thus far he’s had other plans, he’s pretty and vocal and a terror to my 2 cockatiels who are terrified of him, I think he moves to fast for my red eyed one to follow so she’s actually less bothered by him. I’ve tried step up which he does if he feels like it, he doesn’t seem to have any treat he'll eat from my hand and he’s just so much fun to watch going about his budgie business. I give my birds a quiet time daily mid afternoon, the only one who isn’t in his cage at quiet and sleep time is the little stinker Surprise, for him it’s a process to be followed daily, first turn off 2 of three lights, next turn on classical music followed by chase him from one side of the cage to the other at least 3 times while asking him sweetly to get in his cage, then you have to use a scolding tone telling him to stop being a jerk….then he climbs into the cage like he was planning to the whole time.(at which time I tell him he's a good baby bird and such a handsome fellow, turn off last light and go to my room.). Budgies are such little characters.

It has not ate anything besides a little millet, but I'm hoping it will warm up to me soon!

They get on it and the non clipped one's stay on it as well.
