  • Author James Baldwin is taken on a tour of San Francisco by Orville Luster, Executive Director of Youth for Service. The tour takes them through the Hunters Point area, San Francisco's so-called "black ghetto," where 80 percent of the people are Negroes; through the Fillmore area, the "little Harlem"; and through the city's Western Addition redevelopment project - described by Mr. Baldwin as a "Negro removal" project. Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Luster talk to groups of Negroes from each area, as well as leaders of the Negro civic organizations and "action groups".

@Thierry Mugabo W'Ishema Uwilingiyimana Don’t forget that James Baldwin was the SAFER alternative to black intellectuals like Medgar Evers (assassinated), Fred Hampton (assassinated), Malcolm X (assassinated) and many more that you probably never heard of. When was the last time you saw a Black leader/Star that was catapulted to fame by western media even though they didn’t have an agenda to further undermine African culture?

….this whole entire video is the complete bomb, and is of immeasurable value ..but that last 3 minutes and 20 seconds of this video is all fire🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯!!! What a mind on fire Baldwin is! And what a sensational conversationalist! ..but a conversation with Baldwin is not merely and only great conversation, it’s also and is always at almost every moment an exercise in being educated and enlightened! He takes the most subtle thoughts of experience, thoughts seemingly impossible to express through the vehicle and medium of words, and with what seems to be the greatest ease and eloquence and the most profound but simplest terms gives them not only expression, but through their truths embodies them with breath, fire, power, and life!
What a treasure this man is… I won’t say was… thanks to the internet ..and books…..

I’m from San Francisco and this is the truth and hasn’t changed. See “the last black man in San Francisco.” I live in San Francisco and therefore i live in Oakland. u can run, you can “price” black people “out” (into ghettos, into jails, under your boot) you can avoid and live in privileged “peace” but you will still be tormented in your soul, sick, and wracked w “anxiety” until you let this in. if you live in America you owe a very real debt to black people who built, taught, and nourished this country under the unimaginable weight of total oppression and attempted genocide at every turn. time to pay up and know true peace ✊🏿❤️

His words are prevelant, even if ALL humans have lost the ability of eyesight. with racism, being blind is the cure to every argument put forth. At 23:00 this is some profound truth, funny thing is thats exactly what they are still doing in SF, tearing down the old building and building new boxes giving contracts to their friends to place black people into. IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT

This video is scary, outside of having Barack Obama as a president which Baldwin the Great predicted....you would think this was 2020. Not much has changed.

Why do people, like you, insist on reducing the progress made by black Americans in this country? Are we really just chess pieces on a board of white supremacy?

Going into the debt forgiveness process certainly isn’t the way to go! The key to success is an higher level of education yet like this video shows you get no employment opportunities thus leaving a high percentage of black students in debt poverty… deferred loans and forbearance… Systemic racism is still rampant and real…
