- Author James Baldwin is taken on a tour of San Francisco by Orville Luster, Executive Director of Youth for Service. The tour takes them through the Hunters Point area, San Francisco's so-called "black ghetto," where 80 percent of the people are Negroes; through the Fillmore area, the "little Harlem"; and through the city's Western Addition redevelopment project - described by Mr. Baldwin as a "Negro removal" project. Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Luster talk to groups of Negroes from each area, as well as leaders of the Negro civic organizations and "action groups".
"You can't pretend that you're not despised if you are."
James Baldwin had a bigger calling and more important things to do, but the guy had so much charisma he could had been a movie star.
Like a movie star means anything to the struggle.
@Thierry Mugabo W'Ishema Uwilingiyimana Don’t forget that James Baldwin was the SAFER alternative to black intellectuals like Medgar Evers (assassinated), Fred Hampton (assassinated), Malcolm X (assassinated) and many more that you probably never heard of. When was the last time you saw a Black leader/Star that was catapulted to fame by western media even though they didn’t have an agenda to further undermine African culture?
#Gentrification, #redlining #thisisamerica #ghetto #400yearsofslavery
It's a platform, at least. . . But Baldwin had greater platforms. @@derfla5
Who found this gem of a video. This is priceless and beautiful.

Nothing will change until we overthrow the bourgeoisie. Capitalism has failed over and over and must be abolished, so that true equality for all can be given to the rightful owners, the proletariat. Our wicked oppressors are strong willed, but so are we! ✊🏻✊🏽✊🏿
@@KarlMarxFanClub you should move to Russia or cuba. They did that and they will take you. LMAO
I have great love for James Baldwin.
James Baldwin was an intensely deep thinker. He saw the future too vividly. Even as his spirit lives, may his soul continue resting in peace.
James Baldwin was a Very Wise Man.❤
Mr. Baldwin got me wanting to achieve more at this stage of my life. 2021 will definitely be my year. His words are so poignant and his work was so ahead of it's time it's _still_ relevant today. #RIPJamesBaldwin
He was never ahead of his time, we were just (and still are) behind our time

Don't "QUIT"!
Baldwin was one of the illest minds ever🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🔥🔥
A most underrated civil rights leader.
Why do you feel Baldwin was underrated, with his books, his multiple speeches, and the majesty of his charisma?
@@93JubileeHe is not as known today, is what I think the commenter meant, as opposed to MLK or Malcom X. In schools, we learn about MLK and maybe in passing Malcom X, but James Baldwin? I had no idea who he was until I picked up one of his books by random at a bookstore, which I’m glad I did.
the person behind this youtube channel is a true angel, thank you always
Thank you
James Baldwin in 1964 envisioned, prophesied and black president which came to fruition in 2008. He was an awesome human being. Faith, Hope and Love!
Baldwin was so prophetic. He could see that one day we would have a black President. However, he knew that a black President would be elected during a very different time in America.
this was so heavy! thank you for posting these documentaries and historical time capsules, they help in ways MORE than you know!
I love this man, James Baldwin, and took great pleasure in introducting my university students to his work over the years.
"Can't be safe and heroic too" + "For every one man survivor, 20 perish" Whew! blessings to our precious and beloved and ass-splitting, truth-telling Ancestor James Baldwin and our Black family in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Axé
57 years later; now in 2021- this historical film of the conditions the Negro was subjected to in San Francisco, might be viewed by some as history repeating itself - rather than viewed as it should: the past continuum. Thank you for posting this.
How lucky are we today that somebody knew enough in 1964 (I know wandnt 1764 ) to bring along a camera to document this remarkable man on his excursions... I am thankful.
More Baldwin? Yeah, why not. I can definitely live with this alright. Great stuff.
RIP Jimmy Baldwin. Thank you for putting this rare gem here. Poverty of the African American was similar to the African Caribbean people,in 60s England. But,then again, they were dealing with the same people.
@Derek Lowe Scottish inventors gave the English electricity,TV, and ☎️?
@Derek Lowe In Scotland, they are called Scotish Inventors. I lived in Scotland, and I have Scottish heritage. A rich man only knows he's rich if a poor man exists.
@Derek Lowe I am British, not American. On race, I don't see it like Americans, black ones or white ones.
Stunning! I am at a loss for words. An era that has been laid to rest with the ghost of those struggles surviving into todays reality. The more things change the more it became the same.
💯, well said!
RIP, James Baldwin. 🙏
James Baldwin❤️🙏🏽 he awakened many souls to their Divine roots. We as a human race have amnesia we are all gods waiting to awaken to our divinity- like the acorn that is an embryo of an Oak tree.
As James Baldwin and Friends drive through San Francisco...
I am very familiar with the homes and the streets and it brings back so many memories, nostalgia, and within this cloud of dreams and youth, I remember when..... .
My mother knew James Baldwin, it would be nice to see her in one of these old films, riding alongside Mr Baldwin, one of her last words to me,
" Never stop writing."
👏🏾👏🏾
Power to the PEOPLE
WE MUST UNITE NOW
Much respect for James Baldwin's journey and work while he was alive.
This is one of my favorite documentaries. I first watched it as a college sophomore in 2013. It got me into James Baldwin. 1963, 2013, 2020 - many things changed, but too much remains the same. Thank you so much for sharing this documentary. ❤️🙏🏾📚
As an aside, it is also a shame that UA-cam under their draconian copyright took valuable music out of the video.

Thank you for always finding such powerful content. This was a treat, especially the last 3 minutes. Mucho love and appreciation.
….this whole entire video is the complete bomb, and is of immeasurable value ..but that last 3 minutes and 20 seconds of this video is all fire🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯!!! What a mind on fire Baldwin is! And what a sensational conversationalist! ..but a conversation with Baldwin is not merely and only great conversation, it’s also and is always at almost every moment an exercise in being educated and enlightened! He takes the most subtle thoughts of experience, thoughts seemingly impossible to express through the vehicle and medium of words, and with what seems to be the greatest ease and eloquence and the most profound but simplest terms gives them not only expression, but through their truths embodies them with breath, fire, power, and life!
What a treasure this man is… I won’t say was… thanks to the internet ..and books…..
I’m from San Francisco and this is the truth and hasn’t changed. See “the last black man in San Francisco.” I live in San Francisco and therefore i live in Oakland. u can run, you can “price” black people “out” (into ghettos, into jails, under your boot) you can avoid and live in privileged “peace” but you will still be tormented in your soul, sick, and wracked w “anxiety” until you let this in. if you live in America you owe a very real debt to black people who built, taught, and nourished this country under the unimaginable weight of total oppression and attempted genocide at every turn. time to pay up and know true peace ✊🏿❤️
👑 B A L D W I N 👑 Absolutely adore him.
Complete genius. James Baldwin. Hotep.
Ur The Hero's thank you mr.baldwin and AfroMarxist reposting this ✊🏾👏🏽
Marvelous and frightening! Love this man! Oh, San Francisco, Ain't it hard just to live?
This is almost mind blowing footage....it really shows you a predating time capsule of the honest sentiments the ppl expressed and how it started what led to the Black Panther Party in the Bay Area of California during the 60s!
We need to see things like to this remind us of our heroes this man is a true even though things are still
Thank you ✊🏾💚

At 20:45 hearing that young lady speak… and everything she said has to come to pass. Whew!
We will one day have a black President. Visionary.
We've had a black president indeed but not one who is an descendent of American chattel slavery.

Devastating last lines...that should at every opportunity, be thrown in the face of any and all, of the more recent flowering de mal,of racists.
cool. Respect for african american comrades. whats changed? I still had "the other side of the tracks" in my hometown in the 90s. Capitalism inherently separates us.
I think now, billionaires are obtaining all the wealth, regardless of color. Big corporations are owning everyone now. Its pretty scary.
@@seczajkowski true to an extent, but race, gender, sexuality and other intersections inform us of who has the biggest burden in this capitalist society and who has the most to gain through revolution. Thus, who makes up the hard core of the proletariat and who we as Marxists must bring revolutionary conscious to. Who we must focus our efforts on.
@@TheBendablespoons Lol
So capitalism separated maybe communism is better and a government "handler" everyday telling you what to do"? 💪💪💪
I love me some jimmy
I would have loved to have seen an interview with him and Eartha Kitt.
why did it take me, a white american, 31 years to hear about this man? of course much can be blamed on myself, i take note and accept this; but what is insane to me, is the rhetoric he has is universal in the sense of looking at people and structure, not color of skin. His words are prevelant, even if ALL humans have lost the ability of eyesight. with racism, being blind is the cure to every argument put forth. James Baldwin has shown the nation how irrelevant their culture is and how his ideals are not something born for an ideal of freedom.
JAMES BALDWIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤🩹❤🧡💛💙💜🤎🖤🤍💯💢

To keep the mind confused there can never be a stable settlement for it to find clarity. Clarity is needed to properly assess the situation and change it to be more constructive for the self and then those around those same conditions.
Baldwin is a genius

Cops still stop like that cuz im black and im in Portugal
Full of gems but especially the 34:19 - 36:21 mark
The little girl running wearing the beautiful scarf and white dress and her church shoes.
Reminds me so much of myself and my big sister. My mother and grandmother and great grandmother but always tell us to make sure that we are safe watch out for each other never to talk to strangers and to run straight home no stop it off and no Dilly dallying.
And so my sister and I would hold hands and we would keep each other safe.
And we would run.

Worked out for Cuba huh
William Gilbert National Geographic magazine did a report on Cuba being the only country to deliver first world living standards while also being ecologically sustainable. I'm from France and according to the English subtitles, at 2:23 Baldwin says "No one pays his jews willingly". It's hilarious and alarming at the same time. Could you please find a way to correct the automatic subtitles? Unless this a secret message you wanted to share with us... XD
Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing this amazing documentary.
The robot is not that smart...listening to Baldwin no one would misconstrue his words or the reality of the harshness of America even if You are in France.
the correct word was *dues*
maybe you could work out how to make robots hear better? They do give us a laugh though.
This sounds like San Francisco in the 1980
What road is that at 5:10
Yes take that hammer
It’s sad that I’m just learning how we ended up by the time the 80s rolled around. They get you so wrapped up in the rat race you never think to find out why til you finally get the chance to rest

At 23:00 this is some profound truth, funny thing is thats exactly what they are still doing in SF, tearing down the old building and building new boxes giving contracts to their friends to place black people into. IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT
Same story different era.

And when the young man says there will never be a negro prez...James said that their would be, but not in this America-1963
🤣🤣 You and me both. Left-handed lovers of Baldwin. ❤❤
This video is scary, outside of having Barack Obama as a president which Baldwin the Great predicted....you would think this was 2020. Not much has changed.
Why do people, like you, insist on reducing the progress made by black Americans in this country? Are we really just chess pieces on a board of white supremacy?
They did eventually give us a black to put us in our place back underneath everybody he was not for us
Baldwin was .....IN TUNE. American society was....and is ...OUT OF TUNE.

The criticisms of capitalism are still as relevent and true today as they were sixty years ago.
How can the white man not see he is responsibility?
At what point in recorded History do we issue in segregation of the specie, and expect all to survive .. ?
his name is James, not Jimmy
Legally, yes, but he referred to himself as Jimmy, as did many friends and family.
Going into the debt forgiveness process certainly isn’t the way to go! The key to success is an higher level of education yet like this video shows you get no employment opportunities thus leaving a high percentage of black students in debt poverty… deferred loans and forbearance… Systemic racism is still rampant and real…
