Great selection. I expected a Stranglers b-side to appear. You could, of course, swapped GBG for London Lady or Straighten Out, all three are classic...
I had so many of those singles way back when. Autonomy is one the best Buzzcocks songs and how Solitary Confinement wasn’t a hit has baffled me for decades. Did you not consider T.V Stars by The Skids for your list? Trying to explain who David Hunter and Sandy Richardson were to a youngster can be an embarrassing trip down memory lane!
Fantastic as always . A few I like , Sticks Diary ( b side of England ) Upstarts . Noise Annoys ( Buzzcocks) Mars Bars (Undertones) Armagideon Time Clash) Thanks for another great video. How about fav opening album tracks?
Absolutely brilliant selection as always. One of my personal all time favourites would have to be my then local band the Cure and 10.15 on a Saturday night. bside of Killing an Arab. I first started buying singles in 1972 aged 13. Use to stack 6 singles at a time on my mono record player alternatively A and B sides. Listen, then flip them over. It would be a couple of years until I got my first stereo.
great trip down memory lane right there! my favourite B sides not on your list are Subway Sect 'Different Story', Wire 'Ex Lion Tamer' and Television 'Venus De Milo'. Look forward to the next one cheers!
Surely the qualifier for best B side must be that it isn't available anywhere else. Joy Division and Magazine (EG Novelty, 20 Years Ago) were fantastic at this but The Jam - Butterfly Collector wins it for me.
What a trip down memory lane! There's some great B-sides in your list. Here would be a few of my favourites from that era. Pressure Drop the b-side of English Civil War by The Clash. Mars Bars the b-side of Jimmy Jimmy by The Undertones. The Butterfly Collector b-side of Strange Town by The Jam. TV Stars b-side of Intro The Valley by The Skids. Novelty b-side of Transmission by Joy Division. Well done, keep it up
Great choices, I would have put TV Stars by the Skids in there. Some good Clash ones to choose from also, 1977, Jail Guitar Doors, The Prisoner, Armegiddeon Time, hard to select just one.
Another great list Chris! Only missing a few of those singles! Agree with all your choices would change the order of a couple pistols spot on! As a Stranglers fan no argument from me I loved straighten out the b side of Something better change as well! A great time for music! Looking forward to your next video chris! 😀👍
I debated straighten out Ian. Nostalgia took me to GBG. But Something and Straighten was one of the best singles of the decade! Cheers my friend, Chris
Brilliant as usual. Unlike you, I don't think I could put them in any particular order. Today I could say SLF my favourite song, tomorrow it could be The Clash. I just loved that era for music, great memories of Middlesbrough Rock Garden. I think it was the late great John Peel that said about Sid's version of My Way, "He was the only person who sung it, his way".
The Adverts, Bored Teenagers I think I played more than the A side. The Jam Taking My Love was also a big favourite, I agree with you The Stranglers Go Buddy Go is the winner probably second Ian Dury Wake Up, I remember turning the bass right up a feeling it through my bedroom floor. Great seeing these 45’s again . Great list Chris.⚡️
Some great choices, especially 52 Girls, brilliant track! I would have found room for the following, in alphabetical order: Kick (Adam & The Ants), Quickstep (the Adverts), Will Anything happen? (Blondie), Oh Sh1t (Buzzcocks), Tiny Steps (Elvis Costello & the Attractions), Razzle In My Pocket (Ian Dury), The Butterfly Collector (the Jam), Quite Disappointing (999), Love In A Void (Siouxie & The Banshees), and Age (X-Ray Spex). Cheers!
Chris, You are right about 'Wasted Life' being on 'Inflammable Material' (1979), Stiff Little Fingers debut album, and the first album on Rough Trade. I still have it and it's power is like no other record before or since. S.L.F started out as a Deep Purple tribute band called Highway Star, so quite a change of direction.
IMO Inflammable Material is one of the 15 greatest punk albums ever. I wrote about it on the Analog Planet site And their second album is just about as good.
Happy to be familiar with your choices. I was lucky enough to see Deadmen Walking at Bedford Esquires in 2022 when Jake Burns sang Wasted Life - a sublime version, utterly brilliant you must hear it Chris ! on a side note Edwin Collins released a cd single with the Words "Try the flipside".
Interesting choices! Glad you mentioned Satellite (love it!). Also, Joy Division - Novelty, Sham 69 - Sunday Morning Nightmare, Boomtown Rats - All The Rage, Blondie - Detroit 442, The Jam - Butterfly Collector.
Great list. Good to see Dancing The Night Away get a mention too as that is an absolute classic. I have a few which I think are equal to or better than the A Side. Buzzcocks Why Can't I Touch It (Happy Nowadays), BTR Do The Rat (4th Form). Classix Nouveaux 627 (Never Again), Cuddly Toys Fall Down (It's A Shame),Dickies Stuck in a pagoda with Tricia Toyota (Fan Mail), Joy Division Novelty (Transmission), The Jam Butterfly Collector (Strange Town) , The Jam Tales From The Riverbank (Absolute Beginners), The Motors The Day I Founs A Fiver (Sensation), 999 Soldier (Homicide) , 999 Titanic Reaction (Feelin Alright) The Stranglers Straighten Out (Something Better), The Vibrators Amphetamine Blue (Baby Blue Eyes) and the ultimate - XTC Dear God (Grass). Keep it up. Cheers Step
I am toying with the idea of ranking the perfect Jam single based on a combination of A side, B side and cover artwork. With 20 Jam singles (including imports) each aspect gets a mark out of 20 . Once a score is given say for the A side it can't be repeated for any other single so every single gets its own unique score of 1-20 for each aspect if you follow me. If a single scores 12 for the A side no other single can get that score for its A side (hope you are following!) Each single hence has a total score out of 60 and a chart is compiled on this basis. Obviously this only really works with the entire output of one band but perhaps you could do a similar version with Punk/New Wave singles (assuming you don't have the total singles output of any one band) where you compile your top 20 ' perfect singles' in terms of A/B and cover art work . A bit obscure I know !!!!!!!
@steptaylor4728 not sure I have the entire discography of any band. I have all U.K. Jam singles though. My favourite song by them was never on a single. Art school
Chris, I'm loving the site. A great selection. My top three of those you mention would be Wasted Life, Bored Teenagers and Autonomy. Other B sides which would have been in the reckoning for me are Let's Submerge and Age (X-ray Spex), Voices (flip side of Hong Kong Garden) and Love In A Void (this one may have been on an import?), Whatever Happened To (Buzzcocks), Titanic Reaction and Soldier (999) and No Entry by Sham. Another group who did some brilliant B sides were SpizzOil/Spizzenergi. 1989, Platform 3 and Spock's Missing are just three examples. Coincidentally I also grew up in the Bournemouth/Poole area and am of a similar age. I went to boarding school, however, between 1975-1980, so missed out on a lot of concerts.
Good thread…top of my head additions…Punishment Of Luxury - Brainbomb, Upstarts - Leave Me Alone, The Mob - Shuufling Souls, Leyton Buzzards - Through With You, Lurkers - Heroin.
Fine selection as always! I'd have to have Whip in My Valise (b-side of Adam & the Ants' Zerox), Drop Dead/Celebration (Siouxsie & the Banshees' Happy House) and Big A Little A (Crass's Nagasaki Nightmare)
Great selection and idea for a video list. Tops for me would be a toss up between the Pistols " " No Fun" and the Clash " Armageddon Time ". (Extended version) Great channel 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
I loved a 7inch si gle back in the day, it was so much easier to find 90p-£1 too buy a single rather than finding 5 to 6 quid for an album. B sides where an absolute bonus if it was as good or better than the A side some of my favourite b sides where s.l.f 78 r.p.m b side to alternative ulster, moonstomp/ long shot kick the bucket B side to too much to young and the police landlord B side to message in a bottle.
Great idea for a list and a video. Some songs I know (eg Getting Beaten Up, which they did when I saw them at Bham Uni - they were brilliant - Bob announced it was their last gig, I don't know if it actually was) and plenty for me to go away and listen to.
I know a number of these songs which is odd because many of these 45s were never released in New Zealand until about 1979 when some were slowly drip fed to us. But when visiting the city I stumbled across a few compilations which featured A and B sides of songs you would never see released in NZ- and The Motors was one of those. That was the only song of theirs I ever heard for maybe 20 years or so (never saw any of their albums) Compilations might get a bad rap but they opened up the world to me. My gateway to bands like Wire and Magazine who had great B sides as well- multiple great B sides.
Smashing Chris, check out Day By Day by Generation X. Scary how much influence Peel had between 10 and Midnight! It's a wonder I got any qualifications, what with Kid Jenson on earlier. A 12" video would be good. Regards, Ian.
B sides used to be great, REM I think last band who put any real effort & thought in? Some great choices, have most of them, weren't we lucky? My no.1 though, cos I can still remember my smile as soon as I first played it, 20,000 Rezillos under the sea, the flip to Top Of The Pops, couldn't believe it 😂
A band that always seems to get overlooked are the Flys. They released several great singles, give Fun City a listen then flip it over and give your ears a treat with E.C.4.
@@steptaylor4728 I never realised that he was, but after a bit of googling yes he is. I always took it that Hazel was from the south of England...shows you what I know.

Firstly, going to disagree with you Chris regards the Clash being overrated. I share your love for 45s and their B sides, esp. Magazine “my mind ain’t so open”
It’s a cracker. Enjoyed the first Lp by the clash but that was it. Saw them live once. Tbh they weren’t very good at all. I understand their appeal mind. Cheers, chris
Thanks for a great video. Totally agree with the "overrated" comment about The Clash. For me, one of the most overrated bands of all time, possibly second only to those hideous Gallagher brothers and their band.
Ian Dury; There ain't half been some clever bastards always brings a smile to my face.
Classic tune
Great selection. I expected a Stranglers b-side to appear. You could, of course, swapped GBG for London Lady or Straighten Out, all three are classic...
Tough call. All brilliant

TV stars was never a contender. Isn’t there some link between the crossroads theme and Jimi Hendrix. One of his songs was inspired by it I think
I love a B side. Some of the greatest gems are found on the flip. Another great list Chris. Cheers.
Hidden gems indeed. Thanks for watching and commenting again Mark. Cheers, Chris

Bit later but the second version of Adam and the Ants had some epic B sides. Fall In, Press Darlings, Beat My Guest, Christian D'or and Friends.
