I have been trying to get the confidence to do a sump for so long everyone’s tutorial videos sound complicated you made this so simple and minimum I understood everything you did. Thank you

@@paulstingray I noticed you don’t have different levels in your sump is it ok to just let it run through all the media without separating
My sumps are not used for filtration in these systems . If you are using the sump for filtration you want different sections so your bio media doesn’t get clogged with detritus.

Just a suggestion so you don't have the filtered water just goes to the sump again extend the inflow to the bottom of the tank, filtered water goes down and it's drained from the top, a sponge might be a good idea for some crazy fish doesn't decide to live in the sump. By the way the waterfall noise is relaxing so they say ;)
I’ll definitely add a pipe to the water coming into the tanks, good idea! . A sponge might clog and overflow the tanks so I’ll work on some sort of grill so fish don’t jump into the overflow.
I’m going to add a pipe in the sump to reduce the toilet sounds 😂😂😂

I cant help but feel that pump is a bit too small.
The pump is a Nyos Viper 5.0/1000-5000L/H so it’s a big pump in a tiny case but the idea of this system is to drip the water not have a lot of flow. I might use a vectra m2 in the next system as it’s going to be high flow.
The pleco caves seem kinda cool and a new design so I’ve ordered a heap to try and sell

Hemi cats are nasty as!
As long as the catty doesn’t damage the ray you should be fine. My cats are forever trying to kill each other over territory. Eventually I’ll have to move them into something huge to reduce the aggression.
I’ve had one cat stabbed by a ray in a pool and the smaller male cat in a vid last week has a healed stab hole. They tend to not know when to stop lol

My seven just cope, if I had less they would rip each other to shreds and 9x4 is not enough floor space for seven.
this is my dream setup. I'm most likely not gonna use a sump just sponge filters because im broke.
You can setup a sump supercheap. Use a second hand tank or even a big tub and a cheap eBay pump. Drilling your own holes costs under $10 and you can use irrigation line for overflow pipes and stuff like that relatively cheap or a lot cheaper than what I’ve used.

It’s a Nyos viper but I’m upgrading to Dalua Great white pumps as they are lower wattage and fully adjustable

I’m curious how you will deal with nitrates once you have fish in all those tanks? Are you doing massive water changes, or do you have another plan?
I’ve had zero issues over the last year with NO3 it’s been running fully stocked since this vid. And in the last few months I’ve had hundreds of fry growing up in this system. I’ve only now moved most of the fry out and have split the Lnos up.
There’s not really anywhere for detritus to build up. All I’ve done is siphon around 10% of the water each week or so but that also works with my bigger tank systems. Seems to be a happy balance. I’ve never been a fan of massive water changes and I’ve successfully kept a huge range of fish since the 1980s including quite a few fish that were over 20 years old now.
@@paulstingray that’s awesome! Thanks for the reply and info. I have a couple cichlid tanks and I’m always doing massive water changes (I think I overfeed though lol). I’ve always wondered if breeders did huge changes like I do. That’s a good point about the tanks being bare that you can easily siphon detritus. I want to breed a few African cichlids some day, but def not quite ready.
@zachhoward1473 i’ve always found that large water changes actually destroy a lot of the nitrifying bacteria in the media. Even though you don’t disturb the filtration. all the new water going through the filters does damage a fair bit of it and that’s why you get huge discussions on the Internet for pro and against water changes and all sorts of stuff.

Getting into breeding i always feel central systems arent healthy.
How would you keep diseases or parasites to getting to all tanks?
it’s not great for mixed species or fish that haven’t been quarantined first.but it works great otherwise

I’m using Seachem replenish to get to the TDS I want. My tap water is also super hard and alkaline so I can also do a mix with declorinated tap but there’s a lot of other rubbish in it as well
@@paulstingray ok, what do you do about the kh, or does the replenish impact that as well? Also would you then say it is more important to focus on tds rather than a certain GH? I'm currently on rain water (all I have atm) and I've been using seachem equilibrium (to boost gh), and these shells that are about nail size to boost kh and buffer ph.
Use Seachem alkaline buffer to raise KH
It will depend if Rainwater is from a tank or the sky with what the TDS will be. So it would be better to test the GH and KH as TDS will pick up organics in rain tank water

Im SOOOO scared of my RO water. I bought it cause everyone uses it for breeding. I slow drip acclimate my fish, same temp, lower PH (7.4 -> ~6.6) the KH is 12drops so 200ppm (if i did this right) and TDS to 10 from 240. I have lost 8 tetra trying to fix everything at every loss. Its only my RO i dont have this issue with Tap/dechlorinated. not sure what else to check. Any help from anyone. Fish after about 10-30mins fast breath and just float sometimes twitching. I manage to recover and save the last pair and at this point i wont use my RO till i work it out. my google search's are POINTLESS im getting noone with the same issues ever :(
The pH drop from 7.4 to 6.6 is way too much for most species. Ideally you don’t want to jump anymore than 0.1 a day.
RO should also be close to 0TDS and you need to add a buffer to increase the hardness a little otherwise the pH drop and lack of any minerals will be almost impossible for bacteria/ fish to survive.
Did you add the fish to a new tank of RO? Or did you add RO to your established tank?
@@paulstingray new ro to a 20l tank sometimes a small container for a night.
And what did you add to the RO? Any buffers etc?
I’d say it’s just shock going from the water they are in into the RO if they started to die after an hr it so

Just remember to not jump the fish into the RO
You can put your tank water into the new tank then slowly add RO water each day making sure the pH and GH doesn’t jump to much. They would be the easy way without stressing your fish in your smaller tank. Otherwise there’s quite a few mineral supplements you can use to slightly raise the GH ( brands depends on where you live)
