2 of my friends got me into 40k, one tried to get me to play space marines the other orks or chaos. They were both talking about how cool and badass their choices were. But nope, the moment I saw a bog standard guardsman, and was told they were just regular humans and were pretty weak (as in guardsmen) I fell in love with them. I’d just spent an hour or so looking at huge demons, alien horrors, space elves and cyborg super soldiers all the while being told how super fast, massively tough, or magically powered they were. And to then see a man, just a man with no fancy weapons or armour, no powers or special abilities. But that he would go to battle and face these horrors made them more badass and heroic than all the other armies combined.
Well put. As a tyranid player I have to admit... Ive never thought about this and would be a bit shocked as an enemy to face a force that had this very sentiment and tenacity in mind. This game is one of strength of will and wit in combat. The way you speak you could make a very competent player. I say if you enjoy guard; then *play guard.*
As a historical player first, my armies usually ended up as "lots of cheap infantry with rifles... and a cannon!"... Yeah, I play Imperial Guard and The Empire
I play Imperial Guard as well. The stories that move me the most are about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Nothing is more ordinary than a Guardsman and nothing is more extraordinary than the grim darkness of WH40K. :)
I always go with and tell people, #1 above anything else, which army do you visually like the best? Because the bottom line is, no matter how good or bad your army is, no matter how easy or difficult they are to paint or play...if you don't like the look of your army, you are NEVER going to enjoy playing them.
This. Way back in 2003 when I was first introduced to 40K, I wanted to collect and play Dark Eldar, because I liked the way they looked. I had also just seen Hellraiser 1 and 2, and I liked that the Dark Eldar were pseudo-Cenobite slavers. I was told by the person introducing me to the hobby that my best bet as a new player was to get Space Marines and learn the rules/general strategies with them. Foolishly, I took his advice. So there I was with freshly emptied pockets, painting and playing an army that I didn't like, and I quickly moved away from the actual gaming part of the hobby. I've recently decided to give it another shot, and this time I'm following my instincts; I'm going to play Dark Eldar because I like the way they look, damn it.
Amazing advice I’m new and I love the look of the skitarii but they seem like they would be super annoying to paint but in the end because of this comment I’m going with skitarii thanks!
@@golemgaming1687 If I can recommend anything with my most recent starting of a Adeptus Mechanicus army, sub assemblies will most defenitely be your friend with painting Skitarii.
I picked tau in 5th edition because I loved the fire warrior book, then when u started playing I was the only player at my local store who played tau for a good year. Then 6th ed comes around and tau get an update and become mega cheese and I was actually annoyed that suddenly everybody was just playing tau or adding tau to space marines because they are good, then complain at me for playing a cheesy army. Even today people moan about my army choice when we decide to have a game and I'm like "no, this was my first army" and I gleefully point out the old 5th edition battle suits and broadsides and tell them I don't play tau because I wanna win, I play tau because I want to be that little fire warrior fighting for the greater good, I wanna be a Shas' La Kais
I love the Tau for their law, and in theory, it's a great way to try and make the 'Greater Good' actually work. I have loved Tau for maybe 10 years. I have more Tau models right now than any other army. They are one of the heights of 40k in my mind, in terms of the sci-fi nature and design. I got into the lore a bit over the last few years. I love learning about their systems and worlds. It's kind of Star Wars-y in a way, which is great.
I felt the same way about my Dark Eldar. I started in 3rd edition with the boxed set that came with Marines and Dark Eldar. My boyfriend took the marines. So I stuck to DE and built up on it. Learned how to isolate enemies and maneuver fast to overwhelm them. How to assassinate characters easily (just as DE should). I painted them superbly because I'm a very good painter and even though I would lose a lot of games, I did achieve painted army awards. My army had it's ups and downs. Then the new codex FINALLY came out and got some new models. The new book was OP as hell and I was so used to fighting all of the Marine/Necron armies that I was pretty much table-clearing them. They thought I played DE exclusively for the cheese. Luckily nobody else really played DE at the time so I had that going for me. I finally won my first tournament with the new army. Quit soon after that because the new books started to become far more overpowered than my meager evil-elf self could compete. Luckily Necrons got screwed over because I hate them.
My answer is always what looks cool to you. Because about 90% of games like 40k, AoS, warmachine, whatever, (barring xwing) is the hobby. If you want to play an army merely because it is the most competitive or powerful, the hobby is going to become a mindnumbing experience. If the army aesthetically pleases you, then you become passionate about the 90% part of the game, even if you may suck in the 10% part. My brother plays orks, and they are not very good compared to most armies. But since he loves the look, feel, fluff, and even playstyle of orks, he sticks with them, because he knows he spends more time making his army look cool on the table rather than act cool in combat. He could collect Eldar to actually win games, but their aesthetic doesnt interest him, so he doesnt plan on collecting them.
Thanks man! I guess this is the perfect answer to the question that is keeping me busy for the couple of days. I''ll choose the Blood Angels. They look fantastic!
I'm into this hobby for the painting mainly. So I pick an army which suits my painting style and contains models I really want to paint. I don't force myself into anything when painting.
“The greater good!” “But...”*lobotomized* “The greater good!” But I found the the tau pretty fun to customize. Though I cheat and use some gundam model kits in the mix
I joined for the Greater pew and stayed for the Good *damn, my rifle is broken again, Dave* pew, oh, it's working now. Dave? Dave? Damn it. Dave is down.
Plus, for better or for worse, you never have to worry about your army becoming uncompetitive. GW would never allow their poster boys to go a single editions without being good.
started with Space Marines and now I'm doing Necrons which aren't as fun to paint too much but an amazing army overall. especially the lore of how they started
Necrons! Anyone? For real though I love the personalities they have, for example trazyn the infinite being kind of like non-marvel-odin or the mechanic zandrekh and obyron have. It's weird that necrons have personality at all, being soulless robots
Playing the Total War games got me really into he Fantasy Universe. Yesterday I had no idea where to start with models but your videos are helping me a great deal. I have nobody to play Warhammer with but I think it would still be fun to collect and paint models for display. I feel drawn to the lizardmen and Vampires/Undead but honestly I will collect anything that I like the look of like griffons. You have gotten my subscription sir!
I like Tau. I'm not all that interested in the lore of the empire and stuff but the Tech is awsome and I can nerd out over mechs and weapons... which is something I like. I like Orks too, though
I got my first army for Christmas! I am really excited to begin! Got me some Space Marine Vanguards and a Primaris Repulsor. Eventually I want to save up and build a good Death Korps set. Arch Warhammer got me into that lol.
I think lore should always be the basis for a warhmmer army. I don't see the point in getting an army that you aren't interested in other than their stats. I play the Empire because I'm a big fan of 1700-1800 human history and the Empire are based on a personal fave of mine, being the HRE. So they fit the historical side. Then I like their old world lore (and their gods) so that adds another one. Finally Playstyle came in (as the empire are very adaptable so it's a choice that can be made within the faction). I wanted to make an army that focuses on two large blocks of infantry with a huge amount of healing power (IE lifeblood wizard spam with a war altar and Volkmar) so they are pretty much unkillable unless surrounded. They get enemies caught up in fights whilst Demigryphs mop up, cannons go shooty shooty and Priests/witch hunters go round and beat up on hero units. Hopefully it works well (entering my first tournament in september)
I'm a new subscriber, and new to Warhammer 40k, and this video did a lot to help me explain why I'm attracted to the first army that I am; Skitarii/Adeptus Mechanicus. It's a combination of both what I like the look of gameplay-wise but also their fiction and flavour, the thing that makes them who they are and not something else, really appeals to me. Their models look like a nice mix of simple and complicated to paint, and that appeals to me as I intend to get into miniatures and model building as a wider, general hobby too. Having that slight complexity to lean into seems good to me. It also helps, as a newcomer, that they don't seem to have a gigantic model variety. There's less options for things to buy and that helps me concentrate. Keep up the great content, I'm really enjoying it .
Great video as always, lots of good info for those who are uncertain! :) For me personally I always say to people pick an army you love the look and feel of. You can always learn to play that army/unit competitively or as competitively as possible later. For the most part your going to spend hours building, painting and learning the lore of an army. So if you pick one you really love, your going to enjoy your overall hobby experience so much more! :)
Totally agree Adam. I just got into Guild Ball, and bought Morticians as they looked coolest to paint. Now I've realised that other teams might suit my play style better. I'm gonna proxy a few first, to "try before I buy" another squad.
I started with Orks simply because I loved their feel. I loved how their "clap your hands if you believe" thing felt and everything. they were just too hilarious and fun so they were my first army. my first minis being Komandos that I blindfolded ('cause if they can't see you then you can't see them right?) and I still adore them to this day. That being said, one thing I've noticed through some of my play is that Sisters of Battle are actually pretty crazy in terms of power right now, though I fully expect this to change as GW releases new models and the new codex for them which I'm super excited for
Most people I know who are into this sort of thing are buying or planning to buy based on what they like in "hobby hero" terms. One guy wants to buy seraphon because the lore behind them is fun, another wants seraphon because they look fun to paint. Another one is looking at the skeleton horde because he's always liked skeletons and magic users. Another one has beastmen and I have orcs for the same kinds of reasons. None of them have gone "Oh, I think this army is more powerful" or anything like that.
I intended to start a space marine army, but the Death Guard models were so interesting and fun to paint I ended up building a Death guard army. Plus disgustingly resilient is sexy 🎅🏿
I picked Dark Eldar as my first army because it looked the coolest. Now I'm spoiled for models since the entire line was redesigned all at once so it looks brilliant, but the rules are heavily stacked against them. If anything, playing as Dark Eldar has taught me to be a much more competent player as I'm always having to compensate for a lack of power on the tabletop. On the other hand, it gets frustrating losing all the time against armies I just can't hold a candle to. Really my biggest gripe with the army is losing so hard/fast I don't get to enjoy my models on the table.
Dark Eldar are very unforgiving to play and one you definitely have to build and play well to succeed. Have you checked out some tactics for them? 1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Dark_Eldar(7E)
I've read all kinds of stuff about them from people who don't understand where the meta is headed for them. 1d4chan is usually good but no one except for a *very* rare few people know how to play Dark Eldar properly anymore. They're the posterchild of a square peg in a round hole army. People keep using them as glass cannons for example, but they're out cannon'd by so many other races at this point that's not the way to go.
See I wouldn't necessarily agree with even that. They are what you build them to be. They can be a blitz army, sure, but I've also built Dark Eldar lists that have survived 6 turns of Tau shooting just holding objectives. They're not as flexible as other armies but they definitely have options for people willing to go the extra mile to try and make them work.
Nice video, now the story. Back when I first got into Mordhiem I didn't know which warband I wanted to play. Luckily I was in a good group and they let me proxy all my guys with Mage Knight figs until I bought my first box. They knew my family didn't have a lot money and suggest a box of Imperial Militia to get going. Best move ever because it allowed me to get started in the hobby and still play lots of cool warbands. After a couple of seasons, the only Skaven player said "here, try this" and I feel in love with the Horned Rat and have played Skaven in fantasy (all of it) ever since. So when someone asks me what army to play and I have my minis with me, I say "here, try this". In my group we have enough different army's for what we play that someone can try it and see what they like.
Thank you for a helpful discussion video about this topic. I'm trying to figure out a good faction my daughter would like for 8th edition 40k and this reminded me to consider these factors more, rather than be puzzled when she was "ooh!"-ing and "aah!"-ing over a given model and then not enthusiastic about playing that faction. It's one of those things we in the hobby sometimes need to be reminded of. Ironically enough, since I'm currently divesting myself of a WarmaHordes army I picked up based on storyline appeal but that I don't enjoy playing of the tabletop.
deathwatch was my choice when getting back into the hobby. Their versatility when it comes to integrating many different chapters of space marines was so appealing! So much so that it led me to paint strip some of my OG rare space marines and convert them to deathwatch.
I play Chaos Marines, one of the big draws (which they share with Orks) is that the army is literally filled with madmen and relies on kitbashed equipment so you have a lot of creative freedom to model your armies and make them unique. Marines dual-wielding chainswords, Rhinos with crucified guardsmen lashed to the front, you name it.
I tried tyrannids, and liked them, but switched to Guard because at the time I was still living with younger siblings who couldn't leave them alone. Broken. Gaunts. Everywhere. That said, I'm just as happy with the look of the Guard!
I play 40k and I just buy and build what I love from the lore (Adeptus Mechanicus and Sororitas). Win or lose, what matters is the fun you have with the whole hobby experience! And you can always put some house rules into it that completely wreck the current 'meta'.
My first question when someone asks me this is; "what models do you like". Then we discuss the strengths and weaknesses. All I know is back in 1988 when I walked into a gaming store in Grand Rapids Michigan and saw a diorama with some red armored space I had to start 40K and my army had to be space marines.
Before entering age of sigmar. I like the idea of playing death, since I love playing as a evil necromancer if given the option. But the death modles to my surprise were not speaking to me, I found them boring. So I started to do some research on the factions lore of the game. And chaos started to grow on me. This even carry on to 40k chaos look so badass! The lore of a faction can really change the way you look at them
If in doubt, choose Imperium or Guard. They have decent battle potential, sufficient painting and converting potential and they are the ones that should make the broad mass of armies you would encounter in either universe.
Blood for the Larry God!!! Skulls for the Steve Throne!! Enjoy the videos; have you considered doing full 30-60 minute videos covering broad topics? I appreciate your insight and break down of otherwise difficult-to-answer subjects.
I've kicked around the idea. It's a little difficult as my normal cameras can only shoot for 20 minutes per clip. Have you watched any of my live shows? They're two hours long and they cover all kinds of topics. I hear people put on the recorded versions to listen to while hobbying. Thanks for watching!
Death = lots of magic and can have extreme unit size, very high force # control, slow and almost no saves but easily replaceable, reliant on numbers - Daemons = lots of magic and minion push, very mid ground/glass cannons, reliant on magic shields and faster minions - Elves = high ability/command choices but can have a glass cannon mentality, mid speed, but can be tanky and glass like reliant on artillery and flying units to see combat first - Chaos = melee power, magic , slow/mid speed but very tanky, reliant on extra saves and Calvary - Orcs = extreme melee power and tanky but can be very slow and reliant on faster weaker minions to reach combat first - i play death and with no cannons minion numbers and magic will be your only friend in the wake of other army strengths the other army's listed are the ones i've played against with my buds and i don't win a lot with death due to the high management - my view might be skewed a bit from playing them too for the last few years :)
Empire = hero spam with large amounts of artillery + large blocks of infantry for autohits (always fun with a 40 unit infantry squad being unbreakble/2 up save/healing 3xd3 wounds every turn/autohitting/having 80 attacks/wounding on a 3+) essentially kills everything if synergised with hero models
Fun video, Adam. Now you just need to make a separate video going into each game and giving the reasons for playing each army/faction. It would be fun..... To watch you go slowly insane on video. :) One category I think should be mentioned is the "unique snowflake " these players just have to play the army no one else is playing. Don't care about style of play, but might avoid a game if there is t a way to be different. Good topic choice!
2:53 My first two armies (and they remain my two mains) were tau and orks. Tau for the gameplay style and *a e s t h e t i c s*, orks for konversions and lore
I think what would be a great video is a summary of the various 40k armies. I've really struggled to find a concise, not overly long video, that I can show a potential new player which explains each faction. Maybe only showing a few key models and their primary play style. Something like that would be a great tool to get new people into the hobby, because at the moment the best way is to show them the games workshop website but then people get hung up on the prices as much as the figures and that can almost be a detraction. People can look at the 'start collecting' boxes on amazon or something, but then how does a Necron army play compared to Tau army?
I chose guard mainly because I liked the fluff of 'em, liked the shooty aspect, and likes the variety of tactics you can do. From infantry rush, to mechanised, wall of russes to artillery barrages that cover the field, guard get a lotta options. Not all of them work out of course, mechanised is never as fast as Eldar, shooty never as good as Tau, but you can do a lotta things, some unexpected; Like one list I ran, basic 2 vet squads with flamers, company command with officer of the fleet, aegis line with comms relay; and then two full platoons of stormtroopers with meltaguns, all deepstriking. 70 AP3 basic with lots of ap1 s8 scattered around, all landing and ignoring difficult/dangerous thanks to move through cover... it worked very, very well, and caught my opponent completely by surprise.
very well put, I would have to agree with you as l have a chaos army due to their story background and especially the way they look as l love building, painting and playing them.
As I look into various games to see who I might choose I find I am a combination of types 1 and 3. I have to like the fluff and backstory and I have to think they look cool but I also want them to work with my play style so I have a chance of winning. I am currently building a Necron army for 40k because they fit that. Necrons also stood out once I dug in in that it is very easy to create your own unique subset (Dynasty) with unique backstory and color scheme that fits into the fluff. Any fluff set that leaves that kind of customization available for an army will definitely score points with the "hobby heroes".
I’m a newer player and at first went CSM. Thankfully I’d invested very little before releasing I simply didn’t find their play style to my taste. Now working up Evil Sunz Orks and loving it.
I wanted to play Space marines but didn't want to choose the most common chapter (sumrfs, space wolves), so i went with Salamanders, because i liked their lore. After that i bought some mechanicus units because i thought they look really cool, fun to paint and would be a good ally. I'm not really concerned with the relative power of armies, and space marines are supposedly pretty good in the 7th ed. so that was fine
I really do enjoy the method of breaking down these concepts. I'm definitely a Hobby Hero. Have you considered doing miniature cheater guide labeling armies on a ranking of "Hobby Hero" "Powerful Play" and Style "Range" "Melee"and "Tactical" (high mobility or stealth)?
Good clip, again. Thankfully, I'm one of those types that immediately fall in love with armies (Tau, Riptides.. I mean, come on!). But I know people who really have troubles with finding their armies. It can be a tough choice, especially in a market that tries to thrive on impulse buying.
We got the same thinking! I went Tau as my first army, losing wasn't funny and by that, I started to collect Chaos. After 5-6 years of break, I'm starting to get into the Orks
Larry, Steve... Khorne! That's the name. One of my Catachan Veteran Sergeants is named Steve because he lasted nine rounds of combat against a Daemon of Khorne (can't remember if lesser or greater)... In a tournament. Both had one wound left, both refused to be injured the last two rounds of combat. By the end half of the tournament's players were watching because nobody could believe a HUMAN could stand up to a demon, and it was pretty much decided at the end the two said screw it and went off to the pub for a few rounds. I just wish I had realized I hate painting flesh before I'd picked up all those miniatures, but I really REALLY like the lore behind deathworld armies. Hearing about the four "main types" of players definitely makes sense though, I definitely pick my armies based on how they look (Skaven for the assassins, and then later the EPIC DOOMWHEEL OF DOOOOOOM), and I've been reaaaaaaally tempted to get an Ork army going in 40k because they just seem soooooo neat. Great video, and loved the audio ^_^
I have always played Ultramarine, and IG, always... and nothing beats the moments that come when my freakin Apothecary beat 3 gene stealers in melee with his boot knife , or when my Force commander soloed down a hive tyrant surrounded by corpses of fallen marines to be the last breathing thing on the table ... or the time 2 IG troopers help this copse of trees the entire game while being assaulted by kroot and tau riflemen passing their break tests and eventually charged into 4 tau troopers killing them and stealing victory ! Don't let it be about the army ... the power of them... or even winning... Just play to play and crazy unbelievable things can happen ... thats what makes 40k cool to me.
Just finished your GW Pricing video. I agree completely. Its absolutely ridiculous how things are priced. the best value is their Get Started boxes but after that its insanely expensive.
when i started 40k i liked the look of spacewolfs, plus i was like i can paint them in a stark theme, my first game came and i was like ok so how can i shoot tons of powerful stuff with this. my friend told me well, if you want to shoot you should concider getting into imperial guards (i played dwarfs in fantasy). then my i want to shoot the world playstile was seldom taken care of, so i did some research of the different types of imperial guard armies cause i was shocked to find out that there were a lot!. While researching i found the Vostroyan, loved te look, loved the lore, loved everything about them. And now i couldn't be hapier and i wouldn't change my vostroyan for anything.
Most of the local guys always say pick an army you like looking at for your first army. You are going to be looking at it for a long time. Which is reasonable.
I think I last played 40k in 4th Edition, with most of my play done in 3rd. I played Guard for the numerical advantage. Sold most of it years ago, but I've still got my metal Valhallens, which might make up 2 sqauds and 3 heavy weapons if I'm lucky. Anyway, I keep being drawn to the Skitarii Rangers. Whenever I'm in my local GW buying paint or something for my wife, it's always the Rangers that get pawed at.
I definitely pick armies based on play style, at least most of the time. I used play Menoth in Warmachine because I liked the lore, but played Khador because their defensive play style suits me. Today, with Song Of Ice And Fire miniatures I play Lannister because they suit my defensive and counterattack play style and Night's Watch because I like the lore.
Hey man, thanks for these videos. I really enjoy watching them. I got into 40k in high school, but I never had people to play with, and lost interest. 12 years later, I’m just now starting into it again. I decided on collecting Necrons. I like their lore a lot, but I’m not too sure how good they are right now. I’m waiting eagerly for their new codex.
Picked my first army off of how they looked online. In 3rd edition Crimson Fists were the poster child on the codex. The day they finally updated the Dark Eldar I switched because I always loved the lore. I haven't looked back my Crimson Fists now protect my attic from the forces of chaos led by Captain Cortez himself. In closing I do wish the DE would get a new vehicle just one would be fine...
Starting 40K with Space Marines is good for learning the game. But picking an army that you will enjoy painting and looking at fully painted is also a great idea. I started with Tau. During a store escalation tournament over several weeks, I lost 10 out of 10 games with my Tau. Now, I am really a bad 40K player (true), but I still had fun (which is the point). And during those 10 games, there were several memorable moments that I will never forget. Like when a bike unit of Blood Angels tried to take out my unit of Fire Warriors - the Tau should have evaporated, but they didn't and when the Blood Angel player removed the last bike from the table - it felt very good (not a likely occurrence and not expected). I think the Blood Angel's tabled me later in turn 4.
Great video (and channel in general). I'm looking at getting into 40k after playing some Only War with my D&D group, never played a wargame before. For me I'd say the aesthetic and fluff are my top priority with army strength and playstyle coming second, but still mattering to me. For all those reasons I'm likely going to go Adeptus Mechanicus, I just love the look of them (particularly the skitarii guys), and happily they are considered to be pretty decent which is a plus.
First wargame that I played was original Warzone and I had small Capitol army for it. Back in day when WHFB 5th ed was changing to 6th ed I had build High Elves but I didn't really like those after all so I ended up going with Vampire Counts that I sticked with until WHFB was replaced by AoS. When I started 40k back in 1999 with 3rd ed I build Blood Angels and when I got back to it with 5th ed I went with them again and then with 7th ed I picked Dark Angels because I like they fluff so much. In WMH Mk II when I started I went with Khador because of they heavily armored heavy warjacks (of course being red also helps) and later I learned that they have some of best infantry in game in form of Winter Guard. In Infinity I went with Nomads just because I like they color scheme (black and red) as well as fact they were one of two factions in Operation: Icestorm box.
Great video. Nice way to split the different types of choices. Personally I got into Warhammer Fantasy because of the awesome miniatures. The look and feel of the army is most important. I went with Lizardmen back in the day, switched to Orcs & Goblins and eventually added Orks for a 40k addition.
I'll admit, Lizardmen attracted me, but I'm glad I went with Death as my 2nd force. Skeletons are easier to paint than lizards, to me. Thanks for watching!
also, the current tournament meta is more varied than most ppl think...alot of marine armies are dominant nowadays...and with the advent of the 7th edition system of "take whatever you want and make the cheesiest army ever", most competitive players have armies composed of element from multiple codecies.
King Marsh Things have gotten surprisingly cheaper recently, along with the new edition and the start collecting sets for different armies, you'd best start now before your stuck behind everyone else. The 'Nids are awesome.
hate responding a year later, but getting into warhammer is kinda easy. assuming you have NOTHING at home relating to this hobby, like good brushes, modelling paints, razors, etc etc, it will cost about 200, give ro take to fully get in. but if you know where to look and/or have some of teh things you need already, it will cose udner 200. i recommend getting some vallejo or reaper paints that match the color scheme you want, and buying start collecting for Tyranids. P.S. starcraft ripped off alot from warhammer. the zerg are essentially copy paste and renamed tyranids. tyranids have existed for decades.
I always just say go for the army you like the best visually. New editions are gonna come out, power levels are gonna shift, new units will join the different armies. An army can take months or years to flesh out with all the various options available and what can already be a daunting task becomes impossible if youre not enjoying the process or look of your minis. And truth be told in afew months youre gonna pick a second army to vary up your modelling/painting/playstyle anyway. So for your first army pick what looks good. But still ask around your local gamers for the "top 3 worst armies". Most games has a couple of armies that are just not very competitive in the current meta. Theres almost always afew that are best left to the seasoned veteran who knows what they are getting into and are relishing the challenge.
I play Space Wolves because I love the look of the models, the lore, and how they play. I don't mind when I lose, the funnest games I've played have been against Grey Knights (I lost them all), especially when the player got just as into the game as I did so when I challenged in a melee we would both insult (nicely) each other and just have a good time.
the only reason i got back into 40k in 5th was the assault on black reach set. prior to that, i'd only ever had the 2nd ed set, but i quickly fell in love with marines and orks. and i'm strictly in it for the fun. a terrible painter, but i love model building and, most importantly, the lore, particularly making up my own. for example, my marines are a raven guard successor chapter called deliverance mord (which is actually a triple or quadruple entendre) based on the world of blackwood, with the 4th company detachment led by captain montressor*. my orks are less fluffy, other than hq names and themes (warboss and hq are named bogritz and skrewtopz, respectively). their style is basically shooty, fast mechanized assault and lots of template weapons. good for making opponents crap themselves for two turns, before they start really getting my trukks wet... *on a side note, i once read somewhere that much of the inspiration for the raven guard was edgar allen poe, and that their lore had many references to his works. well, aside from 'the raven' being obvious, the only reference i ever saw in official fluff was some quotes attributed to 'sgt allenpoe'. so i made up my own, with a fairly detailed history and everything...
I'm stuck between Space Marines and Tau, I like bipedal mechs and long range, but I also love the towering armor and crusader vibe of the space marines
I would recommend an army thats easy to build, im still pretty new to kill team and i got Harliquins, trying to get a list was pretty difficult, but thr core book doesnt have anyway to change necrons so id recommend that faction to start
Honest question: What would you guys say Ad Mech's play style is? I love their look and lore. I was thinking of getting a box just to paint some Skitarii and a Tech Priest, but I don't know if I want to get more for causal play with my friends. How do they play?
Great video. Yeah, I'm one of those people who picks their army based on looks and lore then their ability to win. Hell, back before AoS came in, my Skryre themed Skaven were designed to implode by around turn three. War Machines exploding, slaves killing more of my models then the enemy and my Globadiers were given the honorary title of 'The Butterfingers' due to such a high kill ratio from dropped orbs. By games end I'd blame my underlings for the loss and not my inability to have a competitive force, which was the true Skaven way. Malifaux was much of the same, with the Gremlins being my faction due to their crazy style. You can't go wrong with greenskin hillbillies. They are harder to play with then compared to a faction like The Guild, but I'm enjoying their risk vs reward style. In the end, if you enjoy what your doing, then you've made the right choice.
David Whitehead you should search the animation video “pity the guardsman” it talks about some of the stuff you’re saying
It pisses my friends off that I play guard and deathcore but it's more like fighting a gorilla war.
That was beautiful 😢
I have just started looking into 40k and grabbed a recruit box but i too like the sound of the guard. Regular soldiers fighting all manner of beasts 👍
The answer is Orks. You should play Orks.
*the above statement is completely unbiased.
this
I'll admit, Orks iz pretty awesome. Thanks for watching!
Orks Orks Orks Orks Orks!
Orks iz da best cuz Orks iz da best. Logek.
Orks is best. You know that Orks is best, because Orks says they is, and surely Orks knows what's best?
Orks.
As a historical player first, my armies usually ended up as "lots of cheap infantry with rifles... and a cannon!"... Yeah, I play Imperial Guard and The Empire
Same story here, hence a Bretonnian army and imperial guard.
Very true. Thanks for watching!
That and play style
Larry... Steve.... Khorne!
Paledomain Thats the first name Khorne, "Steve for the throne of Larry".
SUPREMACY!
the moment of triumph
5th and 6th Chaos God confirmed
I worship Steve 3 times per day
I picked tau in 5th edition because I loved the fire warrior book, then when u started playing I was the only player at my local store who played tau for a good year.
That's commitment, I started nids in 4th because I like the lore and the look, luckily they've improved over time.
Greater good intensifies!!!!!!

Thanks, I work pretty hard on the production values. Thanks for watching!
PANDA!?!? What are YOU doing here?! xD
You've got it down. Good mic, I believe two point lighting, and vignetting. Keep it up!
Lecktrik was enjoying a video! :P I think I was painting one of these while watching it imgur.com/a/6ESX9
oh dear whats that painted in the book
I've never like the aesthetic of the Eldar, either. Thanks for watching!
A E S T H E T I C
Thanks man! I guess this is the perfect answer to the question that is keeping me busy for the couple of days. I''ll choose the Blood Angels. They look fantastic!
Icyl3m0n Yes! I love those as well... and I agree, but I want a secondary army of Tau too, not because they are overpowered, but I like the look
m jared Swenson very well said, i enjoyed reading your response.
I'm into this hobby for the painting mainly. So I pick an army which suits my painting style and contains models I really want to paint. I don't force myself into anything when painting.
It's always good to be happy with your army and your motivations. Thanks for watching!
Imperium! "Guards! Stand strong! The hordes of the undead will dread the day they pointed at the Emperor!"
Hell yeah
This isnt fantasy
and then they get slaughtered by one primaris blood angel space marine

i picked skaven purely because when i was about 9 i went into a tiny model shop an saw some old metal skaven models and thought they were cool.
They *are* cool. Nine-year-old you was totally right. Thanks for watching!
Skaven is my army too. Super evil and funny. But...I love the old skaven miniatures, not the new ones.
What army should I pl-
Space Marines.
But in Age of Sigma-
Space Marines.
Good one 😂😂
Sigmarines.
Wrong. You should play orks.
Even in my fantasy game, SPACE-MA-RINES!
“The greater good!” “But...”*lobotomized* “The greater good!”
But I found the the tau pretty fun to customize. Though I cheat and use some gundam model kits in the mix
Kone Whatsthenamespolicy Tau are basically pretty anime on their mech units
While this is everyone's personal choice, they're all incorrect and you should play necrons
Agreed
I joined the Tau for the pew, I stayed for the Greater Good
+Wight They certainly have a lot of pew pew. Thanks for watching!
I joined for the greater good and stayed for stealth and mobility
***** Not to mention the mobile stealth pew ;)
For the Greater Good!
I joined for the Greater pew and stayed for the Good *damn, my rifle is broken again, Dave* pew, oh, it's working now. Dave? Dave? Damn it. Dave is down.
I'm seriously thinking about getting a bunch of Stevemarines right now ...
Larry all the way bro
Steve pahh ... FOR LARRY^^
I started with space marines, and not because I'm a noob but because the models and the lore are really good
haha noob
Plus, for better or for worse, you never have to worry about your army becoming uncompetitive. GW would never allow their poster boys to go a single editions without being good.
Adam: Larry, Steve?
Me: Frikin Khorne!
Adam: Oh yeah, Khorne

Every time an ork says waaaaahhh, i cant help it but think about waluigi

When I heard about the way orcs speak I thought they were cute, then I saw the models...
I'd either be Imperial guard or Tyranids because Starship Trooper and Aliens
That's a totally good reason. Thanks for watching!
This is a high quality channel, you deserve more subscribers...
I appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
started with Space Marines and now I'm doing Necrons which aren't as fun to paint too much but an amazing army overall. especially the lore of how they started
Necrons are pretty cool, but you're right, they can be boring to paint. Sometimes that's a blessing. Thanks for watching!
Necrons! Anyone?
For real though I love the personalities they have, for example trazyn the infinite being kind of like non-marvel-odin or the mechanic zandrekh and obyron have.
It's weird that necrons have personality at all, being soulless robots
You know Odin wasn't invented by Marvel, right?
Who doesnt remember the long forgotten Chaos Gods. Larry and Steve :D
I temporarily forgot Khorne. Thanks for watching!
They’re alternate names for Gork and Mork, among the lesser-known Ork Buizezz Boyz, the warriors of the White Kolla Klan!
Larry and steve were lost primarchs that fell into the eye of terror after using apple maps
Blood for Larry! Skulls for Steve!
Tau are pretty neat looking. Thanks for watching!
I got my first army for Christmas! I am really excited to begin!
Got me some Space Marine Vanguards and a Primaris Repulsor.
Eventually I want to save up and build a good Death Korps set.
Arch Warhammer got me into that lol.
"It wasn't really tripping my trigger." I'm absolutely going to be using that line.
Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Tabletop Minions one question. Infantry spam or high tier unit focus? I'm torn
Why do you call it "the empire". Thus isn't star wars, unless you're talking about star wars legion
For me personally I always say to people pick an army you love the look and feel of. You can always learn to play that army/unit competitively or as competitively as possible later. For the most part your going to spend hours building, painting and learning the lore of an army. So if you pick one you really love, your going to enjoy your overall hobby experience so much more! :)
Very true. Thanks for watching!
Totally agree Adam. I just got into Guild Ball, and bought Morticians as they looked coolest to paint. Now I've realised that other teams might suit my play style better. I'm gonna proxy a few first, to "try before I buy" another squad.
It's a good plan. Thanks for watching!
That being said, one thing I've noticed through some of my play is that Sisters of Battle are actually pretty crazy in terms of power right now, though I fully expect this to change as GW releases new models and the new codex for them which I'm super excited for
the reason I like infinity so much is because you pick your army by the rule of cool
whatever looks awesome to you is playable on a competitive level
I've been hearing that from time to time. Thanks for watching!
Where do the Sylvaneth fall in style of play? I'm already sold on how they look and their painting potential.
Frankly, then your group is lucky. One power gamers in a group of hobby heroes is usually a set up for sadness. Thanks for watching!
I used to always get slaughtered by Dark Eldar. Damn those Haywire Grenades. Thanks for watching!
People keep using them as glass cannons for example, but they're out cannon'd by so many other races at this point that's not the way to go.
woohookittys They're more of a blitzkrieg style army, depending on your build... but not designed for the long game.
That's a great way to learn what you like. Thanks for watching!

Loved the video, I liked how you broke it down. When I was first getting into 40k this question haunted me lol
I like the pacing of your videos, as well as the content. Suscribed.
Btw, nice audio rec, I sincerely liked it.
Keep up with the good work.
+Altodromo Thanks, I appreciate it. I've worked hard on the audio. Thanks for watching!
deathwatch was my choice when getting back into the hobby. Their versatility when it comes to integrating many different chapters of space marines was so appealing! So much so that it led me to paint strip some of my OG rare space marines and convert them to deathwatch.
1st option is how I got playing Guard in 40k
we have built a defense wall out of the crops's of first 4 battalions. we should be safe now
opp wait, the Ultra's are here. time for them to take credit
Casualty rate 98.9% = victory
TB179 u mean 1.1% will become veterans.
The burning fire of the Emperor's glory has consumed me.
Went with the Emperor's Children for Rock n Roll and the fun factor. Stayed for combat drugs and galactic daemon strippers.
My first question when someone asks me this is; "what models do you like". Then we discuss the strengths and weaknesses. All I know is back in 1988 when I walked into a gaming store in Grand Rapids Michigan and saw a diorama with some red armored space I had to start 40K and my army had to be space marines.
That's why they show those things off. Thanks for watching!
Death = lots of magic and can have extreme unit size, very high force # control, slow and almost no saves but easily replaceable, reliant on numbers
-
Daemons = lots of magic and minion push, very mid ground/glass cannons, reliant on magic shields and faster minions
-
Elves = high ability/command choices but can have a glass cannon mentality, mid speed, but can be tanky and glass like reliant on artillery and flying units to see combat first
-
Chaos = melee power, magic , slow/mid speed but very tanky, reliant on extra saves and Calvary
-
Orcs = extreme melee power and tanky but can be very slow and reliant on faster weaker minions to reach combat first
-
i play death and with no cannons minion numbers and magic will be your only friend in the wake of other army strengths the other army's listed are the ones i've played against with my buds and i don't win a lot with death due to the high management
-
my view might be skewed a bit from playing them too for the last few years :)
InfinitySerpent FOCKING NURGLE
Fun video, Adam. Now you just need to make a separate video going into each game and giving the reasons for playing each army/faction. It would be fun..... To watch you go slowly insane on video. :)
One category I think should be mentioned is the "unique snowflake " these players just have to play the army no one else is playing. Don't care about style of play, but might avoid a game if there is t a way to be different. Good topic choice!
My brother used to be like that with hockey teams he liked. It's a tough way to live, sometimes. Thanks for watching!

My first two armies (and they remain my two mains) were tau and orks.
Sup3r_saiyans which army to choose video
I play Drukhari and did no research I just grabbed a set of kabalite warriors and bought it from my local games Workshop, was that a good choice?
They are a true Swiss Army knife of an army. Thanks for watching!
Now we just need a painting tutorial about how to paint our Chaos Space Marines of Larry
You mostly use blue-brown paint. Thanks for watching!
very well put, I would have to agree with you as l have a chaos army due to their story background and especially the way they look as l love building, painting and playing them.
I'm also a fan of Chaos. Thanks for watching!
Very true. Thanks for watching!
Space marines are not so good in 7th. They are okay, just not the strongest as they were before.
Sounds like you might be a hobby hero. Join the club. Thanks for watching!
I play Chaos Space Marines Renegades... Crimson Slaughter with a few imperial guards added in
I really do enjoy the method of breaking down these concepts. I'm definitely a Hobby Hero. Have you considered doing miniature cheater guide labeling armies on a ranking of "Hobby Hero" "Powerful Play" and Style "Range" "Melee"and "Tactical" (high mobility or stealth)?
Because I"d link that and share it to my gaming groups.
I'm not sure I'm qualified to make those calls, honestly. Thanks for watching!

Ah yes, the Ruinous powers in the form of Nurgle, Tzeentch, Slaanesh and Larry.
Great fluff, intricate detailing, decent modification options, very competitive and hard to beat- Adeptus Mechanicus has you covered ;)
Just finished your GW Pricing video. I agree completely. Its absolutely ridiculous how things are priced. the best value is their Get Started boxes but after that its insanely expensive.
Also i first bought Tau! Great looking army
Yeah, those Start Collecting boxes are pretty nice values. Thanks for watching!
I went with Necrons because I like the Egyptian feel to them, and the Terminator 2 feel. All my warriors have red eyes, to make them look like T-101
when i started 40k i liked the look of spacewolfs, plus i was like i can paint them in a stark theme, my first game came and i was like ok so how can i shoot tons of powerful stuff with this.
my friend told me well, if you want to shoot you should concider getting into imperial guards (i played dwarfs in fantasy).
then my i want to shoot the world playstile was seldom taken care of, so i did some research of the different types of imperial guard armies cause i was shocked to find out that there were a lot!.
Well, i had the same approach as you! I went for the one race that had, for me, the best fluff: dark eldar! Love the models, love the lore!
Enjoyment of the background can really increase your enjoyment of the game. Thanks for watching!
I love swarm armies like skaven/tyranid
Picked my first army off of how they looked online. In 3rd edition Crimson Fists were the poster child on the codex. The day they finally updated the Dark Eldar I switched because I always loved the lore. I haven't looked back my Crimson Fists now protect my attic from the forces of chaos led by Captain Cortez himself. In closing I do wish the DE would get a new vehicle just one would be fine...
Orks. In age of sigmar, in 40k, in kill team, in blood bowl...
PLAY ORKS!
Yeah, I've been interested in building and painting some Skitaari myself. They're cool. Thanks for watching!
That's a lot of armies. Thanks for watching!
I would play Tyranids. They just look primal and beastly. And I like Zerg and Nids are basically the same.
That is, if I had 40,000 dollars.
King Marsh Things have gotten surprisingly cheaper recently, along with the new edition and the start collecting sets for different armies, you'd best start now before your stuck behind everyone else. The 'Nids are awesome.
You mean zerg are 'nids.
hate responding a year later, but getting into warhammer is kinda easy. assuming you have NOTHING at home relating to this hobby, like good brushes, modelling paints, razors, etc etc, it will cost about 200, give ro take to fully get in. but if you know where to look and/or have some of teh things you need already, it will cose udner 200. i recommend getting some vallejo or reaper paints that match the color scheme you want, and buying start collecting for Tyranids.
P.S. starcraft ripped off alot from warhammer. the zerg are essentially copy paste and renamed tyranids. tyranids have existed for decades.
That's some of the best parts. Thanks for watching!
the only reason i got back into 40k in 5th was the assault on black reach set. prior to that, i'd only ever had the 2nd ed set, but i quickly fell in love with marines and orks. and i'm strictly in it for the fun. a terrible painter, but i love model building and, most importantly, the lore, particularly making up my own. for example, my marines are a raven guard successor chapter called deliverance mord (which is actually a triple or quadruple entendre) based on the world of blackwood, with the 4th company detachment led by captain montressor*. my orks are less fluffy, other than hq names and themes (warboss and hq are named bogritz and skrewtopz, respectively). their style is basically shooty, fast mechanized assault and lots of template weapons. good for making opponents crap themselves for two turns, before they start really getting my trukks wet...
Thinking about making a custodes army, my thousand sons is fun but I think custodes would be more fun.
I'm stuck between Space Marines and Tau, I like bipedal mechs and long range, but I also love the towering armor and crusader vibe of the space marines
Some great advice man
Thanks for watching!
Your last sentence is dead on. Thanks for watching!
