- Step by step how to rebuild a Honda PA50 II engine by myself and Will, this video has been a long time coming.
Honda Manuals:
projectmopedman...
For those of you curious, the original crank in this engine ended up being too bent to true, which is why it was replaced. Will was actually able to get a NOS crank on eBay. Because this bike will be forever stock, it's a good fit.
I love watching normal people DIY projects @ home. It gives you an realm of how dedicated people are by following through w/ there workmanship. I love how creative and clever this guy is. You don't need special tools, all you need is patients and brain.
Thank you, you guys, for publishing this! You are passionate about the work and do a clear job explaining all the steps :) I'm figuring out what parts to replace on a 1979 Honda PA 50 I, to make it run smoothly. After watching this, I'm going to replace the clutch springs.
Thanks, glad you liked it! Usually on a stock hobbit if you are having performance issues it is almost certainly a dirty carb
When using an impact driver like that on Phillips or anything else like that you have to twist it to the left to preload it and then whack it with the hammer.
I have seen Old Phillips screws used over and over. Sometimes when you get inside you need to use a center punch on the right part of any screw to get it out and then you can put a slide in it those screws can be used over and over no matter what they look like but you do need to preload that impact wrench like that to whichever way you're torquing the screw or un torquing it
They will be Japanese industrial screws ( j.i.s. ) not philips
20:00 how tf do i get this off without a puller?
The flywheel is probably drilled to balance it. Removing weight from one side adjusts it's centre of gravity and corrects any asymmetry in it's rotation.
Too add to this: It's specifically done here because the three little pins to line up the flywheel are asymmetric so it can't be set at incorrect timing. The drilling is on the opposite side of the two pins that are closer together
Wishing that u had more light on what you're doing.
Hi I'm tryng to do they wiht my new 'old' PA501982 and my question is, at minute 1:11:00, where does this cable come from? I think I'm missing one cable! thanks.
Thank you! I was stuck thinking my stripped out decompression screw was holding me up. Didn't know I just press the spring
Great! Yeah it's one of those things where once you do it once gets pretty easy.
Travis, are you based in NJ by any chance?
Looking for other riders out here...
I cant seem to access the link in your description im hoping to purchase and hobbit but its seen better days would love to restore it back to its former glory
Hey there maybe a stupid question when you redo the engine why don't you redo the paint job and the plastic ? But nice video and a little hello from Denmark 🇩🇰
nice job but please, clean that kitchen guys!
Is it a reliable moped?
There's snap ring pliers specifically made to remove the wrist pin retainer clip.
Awesome video! Do you happen to have a ZA50 Rebuild video on the way?
I just bought my very first moped last night, it's a 1978 honda hobbit but one of the pedals snapped off so I'm having trouble getting it to run. Any tips or help you can offer?
hey i just got a mint condition honda hobbit 1 "1979" and the guy gave it to me with the old and new piston and heads so its brand new but anyways do i need to order the clutch tool to take the clutch housing off? the reason i ask is i have just ordered a set of brand new gaskets to go on the motor all around and i just need to be sure! also with the gasket case there is a ring what does that go on?
I'm about to rebuild my PA50II and I was wondering where you got those replacement case bolts?
Great video! I had just found a 78 hobbit PA50i in pieces in a friends barn. He gave it to me, and I put it together to see what it needed..which is a lot. But after watching your video I am comfortable tearing it down, great job! but what parts list would you recommend getting for the job? ie gaskets and reed and such and where can you get parts reasonably online for them? This is me and my 7 yr old boy's project for the winter. Thanks for a great and clear and straight forward video.
would also like to know what parts I might need
I've used cmsnl.com, it's a Dutch website so shipping only one item is pricey but they have a lot of moped parts and if you can ship them all at once it would be worth it for sure! I've gotten a few things from there, they're all good parts.
@@ryankim345 see my comment to Robert Braun haha
Props on the Blair Witch style teardown
+caricamento Haha!~
nice job bro, sometimes help me if ihave problem my honda moped. tks
Where did you get the new crank?
ok so dumbass me forgot to take the spark plug boot off and it ripped the wire out of the boot (with the boot staying on the spark plug) do I need a new wire, wire and boot, just boot, or can I just stick the wire back in the boot and it'll run?
Where did you buy the special tools? Nice video by the way:)
Drill marks on the flywheel is done two balance it weight wise.
This seems like a dumb question but I'm stumped. I replaced my carb with a new one and didn't notice the bottom fuel line when I took the old carb out. Where does it hook up to? Is that a drain line of some sort??
I've tried googling this but can't find anything. Thanks in advance.
dave sherrill This is the line on the bottom of the carb connected to the bowl with the float in it.
dave sherrill Yep, drain line - some carbs have them and some don't. If your new carb doesn't have one and it overflows it just won't be routed to the bottom of the frame all fancy
How did you get the bearing off of the crankshaft, Travis? You skipped that part in favor of getting a new crank.
It's a matter of slowly and gently getting the puller around the bearing, some pullers have a better ramp than others, but the harbor freight set has been every PA50 motor so far
Could you show me which tool you're referencing from Harbor Freight?
It's been a few years since I bought mine but I'm pretty certain it was this set:
www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/pullers/bearing-separator-and-puller-set-62593.html
When you have a parts washer you can reuse the bearings
Does anyone know the sizes or a link for the two screws that attach the carburetor to the intake?
lol I snapped mine too with 15 pounds of torque off the torque wrench just hand tight the bike down.
Is yellow the original color? Because i got a green pa50 and i like to spray it yellow and if they made an yellow edition it would be usefull to know the right colorcode
+Christian Bärtschi
Someone must have repainted yours along the way, the majority of hobbits are either red or yellow, with some late models being black. Being a PA501 I'm willing to bet if you chip away at the paint you'll find a red bike. A few people have asked on MopedArmy about paint codes but I'm not sure if they got anywhere.
Colors:
www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/PA50I_%28PA50M%29_and_PA50II_Information
Oh sorry I forgot to tell you that its a camino pa50m and not a hobbit but they are identical and the original color of my honda camino is surely green but thanks for the links I ll look if there are some usefull information
Christian Bärtschi Ohh yeah that'll make a difference, Europe stuff is always different
Yes but i think it would be nice to paint it in the original yellow of a moped thats identical with mine so that it shoes like an yellow hobbit
Idk what those marks are, on the fly, but mine has them too. Which means they must have been made during manufacturing.
Were you able to find a carb rebuild kit?
Treatland has the gaskets and float needle
TravisTutorial Thank you so much! you saved me a lot of time.
They drill them to balance the flywheel I would guess
the drill holes were to balance on the flywheel
Is there anyway to make this a top tank
Simba Perkins Yep, just like any other step through you weld a bar and add the tank. With a Maxi you have to work a little harder to make it look decent.
Oh thank god I was hoping it would be easy and could I use this video as a reference when putting a new kit on it
Simba Perkins The top end on a kit is pretty much the same procedure compared to the stock top end. Mixed up my videos here, a Hobbit top tank is a more popular mod, search MopedArmy and the 1977Mopeds Garage site for some great examples.
Thank you so it's a smart buy ? And thanks for all this help
Simba Perkins
A kit? So long as you have the right setup a 70 kit can be a lot of fun. An exhaust with an expansion chamber, larger carb and intake, bag of jets to tune, probably an electronic CDI retarding ignition since Hobbits run really hot, clutch spring with a modded or aftermarket variator and a temp gauge to monitor head temperatures will set you up for success. The 70 kit won't be useful if your intake is still restricted to 12mm and you have a tiny exhaust with no powerband.
would a stock hobbit hit 30mph?
If it's PA50II model, should be pretty close to that, if it's a PA50I, about 20mph is about what you can expect. "Usually", the yellow ones are the 30mph and the red the 20mph, but not always
TravisTutorial okay thank you!
Why does it run this bad ?
I have a 76 honda PA 50 for sale
Gus... Nooooooo!!!
Guss may have needed water.
Dimple marks are someones half ass attempt at weight reduction.
