Are there solutions? Fault Lines travels to some of the regions hardest hit by the recession, tracking some creative measures taken by local communities to combat the jobs crisis from the bottom up.

I remember the day when my husband came home and told me "This is it." That was his last day after 30.5 years in aviation industry. The job he got right after leaving the Air Force. It was heart wrenching. The politician made it more economical to ship job overseas than to keep it in the United States. Sad.

Yes, one third of what he was making from Aviation company. Ready for retirement but medical insurance will eat his monthly pension. The beauty of living in America.

There is one explanation for unemployment in developed countries with a higher standard of living than underdeveloped countries.. And that is the difference in minimum wage.. If you can pay a worker 150$ a month in indonesia why pay an american worker 700$ for the same job? So the real question is: why is the minimum wage so low in those countries?? Because they are packed with people living under the poverty line.. So what will happen to those indonesian workers, once the standard of living rises and their salaries rise? They will move the factories to another poor country with minimum wage 150$.. and so on. Then people in indonesia will have the same discussion the americans have today..

Joe Smith starts another day early, having set his alarm clock (made in China) for 6am. While his coffee pot (made in Canada) is perking a brew (made in Colombia), he puts his hair dryer to work (made in Taiwan) and shaves with his electric razor (made in Thailand). He puts on a dress shirt (made in Indonesia), and jeans (made in Singapore) and a pair of tennis shoes (made in Korea). After cooking up some breakfast in his new electric skillet (made in the Philippines), he sits down to figure out on his calculator (made in Mexico) how much he can spend today. He searches with his computer (made in Malaysia) and makes a few calls on his phone (made in Finland). After setting his watch (made in Switzerland) to the radio (made in India), he goes out and gets in his car (made in Germany), fills it with gas (made in Saudi Arabia) and goes looking, as he has been for months, for a job. At the end of another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decides to relax for awhile. He puts on a pair of sandals (made in Brazil), pours himself a glass of wine (made in France), and turns on his TV (made in Japan) and once again wonders why he can't find a good paying job (in, guess where... America).

The FDR Work Program was successful in the 1930's because you didn't have computers and robots back then and there was also a labor shortage. Today you have computers and robots and a labor surplus which means U.S. employers will not conform with any government work programs.

Oh yes, we Government don't create jobs - that's the Entrepreneurs. But when entrepreneurs start businesses and risk their capital, the Government is first to stick it's nose in and tell those companies how they must work, who they must employ, how much they must pay. And then, the Government that has no actual idea how to run a business says it is surprised that businesses fail.

It's just not enough companies and too large of a supply of workers. It's all about the laws of supply and demand. However, you could start your own business if you can find the capital. The jobs that do exist are low maintenance service jobs were you might make at least the minimum wage. The future is living and working abroad. Get your education and skills sets up, get your passport and roll out! Those from abroad could just return to their own nations with experience, education and skill sets acquired in the u.s. At least that's an advantage abroad. Lastly, there are jobs but you need 5 of them to make a decent living. Also, who the heck wants to work and live in Mississippi?

"American students ranked dead last, 25th out of 25, in math and 21st out of 30 in science. The U.S. also scored worse than ranked countries outside the OECD (considered to be developing nations) like Russia, Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Estonia."
Maybe if americans began to honor education in the math and sciences then they would be prepared for the jobs. It is time for people to 1. stop blaming the government for the problem and 2. for people to begin to educate themselves. Oh...and we need to stop religious extremists from attempting to dictate what is taught in science classroom. If we have become lazy and stupid it is because we have decided to become lazy and stupid.

This is real information! It is so true that millions of people are struggling with wages from low paying jobs. It has become much more difficult to obtain higher paying jobs because so many people are fighting to keep them,,and more people are needing to go back to college to get training to get something better. We have to learn to trust God and use finances wisely.

This was made 14 years ago, and little has changed for the better. Thank "trickle down" economics, and NAFTA. Over the last 40 years, living wage jobs, especially those in manufacturing have been hollowed out of America leaving stagnant, low wage service jobs with NO benefits, healthcare, retirement, or upward mobility. The middle class has, and continues to shrink. At the same time, the ranks of the 'working poor," the indigent, and homeless has consistently grown. We have become two separate nations. One of HAVES, and one of HAVE NOTS. It no longer matters how hard you work. The middle class economy of the 20th Century is now extinct. And as long as the plutocracy of this country controls federal, state, and local government in America, I don't see this changing anytime soon. Welcome to the new "Gilded Age."The clock has been turned back on the American people.

Very good, in fact, we Chinese are now also suspected of low wages, facing a large number of unemployed people at the same time the company can not recruit people to work for them. The world is moving toward slavery, and the people at the bottom are facing more imbalances. Even if the people at the bottom are part of society, the fate is in the hands of the rich. This shows that the loopholes in the modern economy are beginning to show up, the world is about to happen, and the values are about to be reshaped.--From Google Translate
