Are there solutions? Fault Lines travels to some of the regions hardest hit by the recession, tracking some creative measures taken by local communities to combat the jobs crisis from the bottom up.

I remember the day when my husband came home and told me "This is it." That was his last day after 30.5 years in aviation industry. The job he got right after leaving the Air Force. It was heart wrenching. The politician made it more economical to ship job overseas than to keep it in the United States. Sad.
Did your husband find a job yet? Sorry about your situation..
Yes, one third of what he was making from Aviation company. Ready for retirement but medical insurance will eat his monthly pension. The beauty of living in America.
Yet I bet you& your spouse votes+ repeatedly votes for conservative, republican& liberterian candidates and politicians‼
Flora Maybe national healthcare could help with that
2016 and nothing much has change.
Tried looking for jobs in my area. Retail and fast food only. Hundreds of people fighting over minimum wage. Sad
Thank god Trump came along to reduce unemployment to under 4%.
@@BullToTheShit LoL 😂😂🤣 he's tanked the economy, gave the rich tax breaks, made farmers broke, and phfruqk'd up trade.... LOLOL 😃😂😂😂
2:20 I admire her drive. Years later, I hope she's doing better and still believes her country could be something worth being proud of.
yeah hillary will make sure u hav this documentary part 2 continuation few years time
There is one explanation for unemployment in developed countries with a higher standard of living than underdeveloped countries.. And that is the difference in minimum wage.. If you can pay a worker 150$ a month in indonesia why pay an american worker 700$ for the same job? So the real question is: why is the minimum wage so low in those countries?? Because they are packed with people living under the poverty line.. So what will happen to those indonesian workers, once the standard of living rises and their salaries rise? They will move the factories to another poor country with minimum wage 150$.. and so on. Then people in indonesia will have the same discussion the americans have today..
LMAO I am watching this in 2021 and commenting to myself wait in 10 years the challenge will be insane.
Seven years later, underemployment, as well as unemployment, is still a problem.
Exactly right!!
Really???? So what about all the jobs trump created???
Ask Ukraine for some of our tax paying dollars back🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
If you are lower middle class or poor and having a hard time, why would anyone have 3, 4 or 5 children.
Cut ALL TAXES 50% and impeach this whole administration!!!
Joe Smith starts another day early, having set his alarm clock (made in China) for 6am. While his coffee pot (made in Canada) is perking a brew (made in Colombia), he puts his hair dryer to work (made in Taiwan) and shaves with his electric razor (made in Thailand). He puts on a dress shirt (made in Indonesia), and jeans (made in Singapore) and a pair of tennis shoes (made in Korea). After cooking up some breakfast in his new electric skillet (made in the Philippines), he sits down to figure out on his calculator (made in Mexico) how much he can spend today. He searches with his computer (made in Malaysia) and makes a few calls on his phone (made in Finland). After setting his watch (made in Switzerland) to the radio (made in India), he goes out and gets in his car (made in Germany), fills it with gas (made in Saudi Arabia) and goes looking, as he has been for months, for a job. At the end of another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decides to relax for awhile. He puts on a pair of sandals (made in Brazil), pours himself a glass of wine (made in France), and turns on his TV (made in Japan) and once again wonders why he can't find a good paying job (in, guess where... America).

Knock, knock! Homeowner: Who's there? Visitor: The sheriff! Child: Mommy, why are we walking away from our house? Mom: We're walking to a public shelter, sweetie.

The end
93 million out of work......now.
93 million people in this country.....don't have jobs with a living wage.
The FDR Work Program was successful in the 1930's because you didn't have computers and robots back then and there was also a labor shortage. Today you have computers and robots and a labor surplus which means U.S. employers will not conform with any government work programs.
Isn't that terrible, I am creating something called the world workforce union to get rid of that
REDUCE THE WORKING DAY ,PEOPLE FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS WE HAVE 8 HOURS DAYWORK, IN ALL THIS TIME WE HAVE DEVELOPED A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO DO OUR LIFE EASIER, SO WHY ARE WE THEN WORKING AS MUCH AS WE DID 100 YEARS AGO? WAGES WILL GO DOWN ANYWAY IN A MARKET WITH HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT .
Oh yes, we Government don't create jobs - that's the Entrepreneurs. But when entrepreneurs start businesses and risk their capital, the Government is first to stick it's nose in and tell those companies how they must work, who they must employ, how much they must pay. And then, the Government that has no actual idea how to run a business says it is surprised that businesses fail.
"But unfortunately, due to the statistics, we can't win". That REALLY hits home for me.
Six months after the day these people stop working, they will walk into the federal unemployment office where and when the clerk will tell them: "Sorry, your unemployment benefits have been exhausted."
I'm that guy - I need a real job. Lots to offer - over qualified for everything or in too much competition to get noticed. Just want a F'n job worth something. Every job interview is like a game - i don't want games - it's not a game.
It's just not enough companies and too large of a supply of workers. It's all about the laws of supply and demand. However, you could start your own business if you can find the capital. The jobs that do exist are low maintenance service jobs were you might make at least the minimum wage. The future is living and working abroad. Get your education and skills sets up, get your passport and roll out! Those from abroad could just return to their own nations with experience, education and skill sets acquired in the u.s. At least that's an advantage abroad. Lastly, there are jobs but you need 5 of them to make a decent living. Also, who the heck wants to work and live in Mississippi?
And then COVID happened & ppl with their own business are in line at the food pantries. And the ones working abroad came back. There's no guarantee plan.
Let's be honest, if your not prepared to work 80 - 100 hrs a week or live in a paid for debt free home your most likely gonna struggle in life.
I miss the time when "Made in America" products are plenty in the market. Nowadays, they're mostly made in China, a very crappy quality.
too often people dont want to pay fr the extra quality which undermines selling made in america stuff.

Some of the people in this video have kids? They whine and can not even
Support themselves.
Abandon min wage and union! Free the American labor!
"American students ranked dead last, 25th out of 25, in math and 21st out of 30 in science. The U.S. also scored worse than ranked countries outside the OECD (considered to be developing nations) like Russia, Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Estonia."
Maybe if americans began to honor education in the math and sciences then they would be prepared for the jobs. It is time for people to 1. stop blaming the government for the problem and 2. for people to begin to educate themselves. Oh...and we need to stop religious extremists from attempting to dictate what is taught in science classroom. If we have become lazy and stupid it is because we have decided to become lazy and stupid.
you can't compete with corporations even if you ARE smart enough to come up w/ a neat idea. they have wayyyyyyyy more money than we can ever dream and they will do everything they can to eliminate you and put you out of business if it came to it.
Automation is at full speed in america.america thoughts they are intelligent, powerful but reality is they are fool. They giving all our jobs to machine
"what factors prevent you from getting work?"
"well we black"
New York City need do something like Ohio city...
The same thing is happening again and it's affecting Indian market also now 😢
This is real information! It is so true that millions of people are struggling with wages from low paying jobs. It has become much more difficult to obtain higher paying jobs because so many people are fighting to keep them,,and more people are needing to go back to college to get training to get something better. We have to learn to trust God and use finances wisely.
jonna u are soooo right.
Watch.......The Last Truck !!
"Since last year's stimulus package, there has been no major response from the government."-this, coming from a newsreader somewhat summrarises the root of the problem, albeit not the way many people seem to think.
2019 not much changed neither recession on way again
This is good . Why is it not being done all over America ?
Those jobs would have gone overseas any way.
16.00. Great these people are evergreening and solar and winterizing ,but there is a limit. Nothing exportable.
These whiners... "I have no marketable skills, so the state must take money from other people and give me a job!". "We can't get a job because we're black!" But they're playing basketball in the middle of the day? And that kid who said he was going to mow lawns and take care of himself? That kid is going to make it, I hope he can protect that fire.
Some corporate bosses sitting in London closing a factory in Ohio, is that their complaint? As the clip itself says, the factory is creating job for Turkish people. Why are those corporations obliged to create job in the US instead of Turkey if they want to?
This was made 14 years ago, and little has changed for the better. Thank "trickle down" economics, and NAFTA. Over the last 40 years, living wage jobs, especially those in manufacturing have been hollowed out of America leaving stagnant, low wage service jobs with NO benefits, healthcare, retirement, or upward mobility. The middle class has, and continues to shrink. At the same time, the ranks of the 'working poor," the indigent, and homeless has consistently grown. We have become two separate nations. One of HAVES, and one of HAVE NOTS. It no longer matters how hard you work. The middle class economy of the 20th Century is now extinct. And as long as the plutocracy of this country controls federal, state, and local government in America, I don't see this changing anytime soon. Welcome to the new "Gilded Age."The clock has been turned back on the American people.
this is out of topics but, whatever, at 18:37 there's a couple of high rise window cleaner with minimum safety, why american never meet international safety standards, just why?
Turkey, huh? That's a new country on the list!
no
Capitalism is the Crisis!!!
Very good, in fact, we Chinese are now also suspected of low wages, facing a large number of unemployed people at the same time the company can not recruit people to work for them. The world is moving toward slavery, and the people at the bottom are facing more imbalances. Even if the people at the bottom are part of society, the fate is in the hands of the rich. This shows that the loopholes in the modern economy are beginning to show up, the world is about to happen, and the values are about to be reshaped.--From Google Translate
These employee owned companies seldom work I believe, South Bend comes to my mind.
but this was 6 years ago. better now maybe
+Melicia But you know another recession is going to happen again. It was the early 90s. Then 2000, then 2007. So who knows how the next one will be.
Melicia Better? Now employers are making candidates compete against each other for a job. They allow 100 people to apply and out of those 100 they only pick about 5. People are unemployed because of picky employers. Things are getting worse.
Melicia worse
Without companys, factories, jobs, American is no longer strong.
i want to just get on with my life finish playing games
The people: Let's get this country working again. The plutocrats: Let's get this country totally unemployed.
Ask yourself? How hard is it to start a business? How many regulations keep me from even starting a business? Why does the government attack small business and yet supports big corporations? Why do lawyers sue companies into oblivion?
SILENT WEAPONS FOR QUIET WARS.
Tarifs on import and use that money to subsidize companies that employ workers locally for a fair wage.
Suddenly Turkey is not so attractive anymore.
Its pronounced DCHZINA
I very much doubt the CAPITALIST will allow this CO-operative idea it is good for America but??..
I'm sure every American wants to be a hotel bell boy on min wage.
Be the one who create job opportunities, Mark Z, Bill Gates, Steve, that PayPal guy, research and invent something, how bad do you want to change your life? Make a choice, its never that easy, but its worth it at the end.
To help the economy, the best thing the federal government can do is to GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY.
Whyy, no company should get rewarded for shipping jobs away that should be reserved for the companies keeping good jobs here in the US
Crying in a bar saying you dk what to feed your kids? Girl 😒
The American people are at some fault for job losses we want the cheap appliances from China versus the higher-priced products made in USA

You know what's crazy. God Jesus' heavenly father proves to humans every second of everyday that he is a demon+ do demons' works and has been proving this to humans since history has been recorded; yet humans are still required to worship God, Why? It is now time for all humans to hold God accountable for all of his actions, especially all of his demon actions that he has been performing since the beginning of time‼
You sound like one of those demons. Don't blame God for mans choices and actions towards fellow humans.
