    When I was growing up, my father was a mere laborer in a factory but the rent was always paid, we had a nice clean apt and good nutritious food to eat. Unbelievably, he was able to put a few dollars away and treat us to a movie or some Chinese takeout at the end of the month. He was a happy man and I didn't even know we were actually poor as most of our friends and family lived in similar conditions. He used to say that with technological advances and other progress, everyone would live semi comfortable and give their families what he couldn't give us. That didn't happen...wish I could go back to those days...

      I made good desions too my entire life. However, racism is real especially when you try to denounce it and call it by name.
      Having a Black president was actually an awakening.
      Now, I believe the next step is to humble ourselves and try to accept and reconcile our history as a past with consequences that demand attention in order to obtain complete healing.
      Eternal welfare, fix your own problem actitud, neither mass encalceration are solutions.
      The actual solution is to get all together and engage into a proactive dialogue.
      The problems of one should be considered everyone's problem, a common cause.

      The things that always puzzles me is, when the Chinese, Japanese, or filipino, Mexicans, Nigerian, Ethiopian all of them come to America without a penny sometimes. But they get help by governmental departments. So where is the help for black Americans? or the people who live in the same level of social status?
      I mean it's ridiculous you do full time work and you can't afford to live. Ridiculous! IT's imposed poverty upon them.
      The black Americans or other any who were incarcerated before 20 they should be pardoned and let them live their lives and get jobs. But when they are once after 20 if they commit a crime then they should do the time. After they are free, they should be able to do the jobs that are not related to the crime they committed....

      I have some mixed feelings, because the poverty I lived in was worse than anything they've shown here. Honestly not one-upping here, and I feel nothing but compassion for all of these people. But, like, this is the documentary equivalent of an inspirational poster. Everyone's so positive and hardworking and all that. But try living while broke AND suffering from mental illness and multiple physical disabilities in a world where nobody thinks your life is worth anything. It's a lot harder to be cheery and energetic.

By the time I finished school as a disabled student everything I learned is irrelevant and I never found a job. I'm almost 60 and I have been homeless 3 times. Learning to live on an income 1/2 of what the nation's poverty level makes me know that I will probably die in poverty.

      No a study came out recently and NY beat Cali but only by around $400 or so, but yeah it is extremely expensive. My home town. Has seen a population boom over the last 10 years it went from about 50k to nearly 175k now. Mostly well off people who got locked out of their cities by even more wealthier people, so they started buying homes where I live. Prior to that you could pick up a house for about 180k and it was a decent home but now "decent" homes run you about 600k to 800k. The long time residents can no longer buy a house because prices skyrocketed. Even rents have skyrocketed I'm fortunate enough to still be able to afford living in a decent area, I'm barely 21 so I am focused on getting a SC license and getting a GC license after that and using that to make more money, it's a tough life atm but I'm trying and luckily things are good for now. One can look at family structures to determine some of the social problems that put people in poverty - especially young women having children they can't afford. Too many are reliant on the gov - and know they can rely on them for child support but kids growing up with lack of supervision, role models, etc. have much tougher time with education, work ethic, etc. You can't blame the gov for all your problems - and human nature suggest that people often blame others for their situation. Where is the self determination? The responsibility for your own future- your welfare.

    I understand being super-broke - believe me, I've been there, but most people don't know how to eat decently when poor. Dried beans, lentils, legumes, brown rice, potatoes, onions, and celery all are super inexpensive, they go a long way, and they combine to make yummy and healthy food. Do not purchase canned, frozen, or prepared foods - they are too expensive. Make your food in batches from scrap, freeze the excess for later use. If you are poor, steaks should not even be considered. You can grow herbs in pots in the window or on a small balcony. Shop for veggies at the 99C only store - you can get 5 pounds of potatoes, onions, or sweet potatoes for 99 cents. You have to be nuts to shop at Von's or Albertson's if you're broke.

I worked in hay, tobacco, and other farm/odd jobs for minimum wage till I got enough to move to a nearby town. After moving, I worked at gas stations, a furniture store, and a funeral home to get an automobile. I then moved another 75 miles to a town of about 10,000 and started working in manufacturing. I went to school to be a machinist. I now make over $60,000 a year.

At the community college level, your financial aid will be enough to complete a degree. You can become a Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, X-Ray Technician, Laboratory Technician, Medical Records Technician, etc., at most community colleges. The medical field will offer the most opportunity for employment.

    It’s something about a professional look and feel when you’ve been so used to just wearing whatever because you have lost hope and only live a repetitive lifestyle but when you get that opportunity to put on a suit and tie ... that’s a wonderful feeling and it makes you view yourself differently and others respect you a lot more. I’m a woman and I wear suits and ties and button up shirts on interviews and important events and you definitely stick out as classy! I was so happy to see shamanek put on that suit because she went from an angry mad black woman to a professional hard working loving mother figure ... that’s real and I am praying for her that she prospers and gets all she can! There are so many children so upset at their parents but it takes growth and understanding to know what your parents really went through to understand it’s. Not their faults! I know that God has blessed us to be in the position we are in but there are things we have done as well to maintain it. We practice financial literacy and we do not live beyond our means. I believe there is a way out of poverty for many of us if they are taught financial wellness. I am teaching my step son to prepare to get a CDL license and a degree. As a black man my job is to be in the home in service to my family providing and protecting. Best thing you people can do is start your own businesses and what ever little money you have, you make sure it stays in your hands. Make that money bounce from 1 black hand to another black hand so that you all get to benefit from that money. Some of us don't want to improve so that group should be charged off to the game and left to die on the vine. Those of us who want to advance and build a legacy should find a way to unite, share ideas, save, invest, keep out of debt, and above all keep variables out of our lives. Variable? I define a variable as any person, place, or thing that you allow to stand in your way while you try to advance.

    Why does it seem like all these poor moms bottlefeed? It seems that every docs like this I watch, these moms complain about not being able to afford food for their kids and they plop a bottle of expensive formula in their kids mouth. • @sg8953
      @sg8953 7 років тому +2

      Erato IsYourMuse The hospitals don't do a good job of teaching new mothers HOW to breastfeed and if you've never been around mothers who breastfeed, it's a steep learning curve and the baby must be fed. Formula ends up being the most convenient option. My niece really tried hard, but finally gave up when her son wasn't thriving, the lactation consultant at the hospital wouldn't return her calls and the nurses were impatient with her questions. She has learned a lot from other mothers in the last 3 years and she would probably be successful at breastfeeding now. The whole system makes breastfeeding an uphill battle.

    • @NamelessVoice808
      @NamelessVoice808 5 років тому

      Shawna Gretzinger La Leche League and WIC can help out mothers trying to breastfeed. I totally get that it is way more convenient to formula feed. But to succeed at anything in life, you have to be willing to put in the work and ask for help when it’s not going to plan. If the child is not thriving or the mother is not producing enough milk then formula is the only option.

You can get a second chance of course but you have to not put yourself in the system and come out tainted with that. High school is not going to cut it. You have to have a skill that is transferable and keep that skill marketable. Never get complacent. I look at this poor guy and his girl and I see many people like him that I know. Not realistic and you have to get away from where you are sometimes. You have to know that you are also competing with others who maybe are a little bit more marketable than you. Its a vicious circle and sometimes for some folks unavoidable.

Every year the farm bill money goes to the rich farmers and no help available for the small farmers. Transportation is the third largest economy of every nation. Another tip. If the world is systematically racist, Stop naming your children with African heritage names. Most large places of employment have software that scan resumes. Those African heritage names could be one of the flag tags on resume scanners. Do not wear lip rings and head wear to an interview and hide all tattoos. If you want to be treated as a professional, you must act and look like one. A great interview tip is to go to the place you have an interview with a few days before. Take a look at what others are wearing and how they look. Fitting in is crucial. If you have a computer, study the company you are applying for. You have no excuse today to not know about the company history, how many locations, the number of employees, and mission statements of your employer of interest. These a must tips for looking for a job.
