The irony is that these small towns are the beneficiaries of "outsourcing" from bigger cities. Companies relocate for cheap land, cheap labor and lower taxes. After ten years, everyone acts like the jobs have always been there and will never leave

The young couple made the same mistake millions made - they used up all their funds trying to maintain that house. They should have stayed in it until it was foreclosed on. Their credit was going to be ruined any way. You might as well ruin it yourself and have some survival money in your pocket. Upper middle class people who lost their jobs did this too. They paid the $4K or $5K monthly mortgage until they eventually lost the home. They could have just saved all the money had. You need to start predicting the future.

The last scene was poignant; he sits down on the bed when he hears the recorder say in a sprightly voice from an indifferent young woman that he doesn’t need to go back to work, and to come back to the agency tomorrow to find something else. His eyes become glassy, he slumps down, and we see tears build behind his eyes before he breathes in deeply and refrains from crying on camera. Such a hardworking man, so tired, and his future seems so uncertain. He’s older, his car is breaking down, and I speculate that his age works against him for employers. What are we doing that this uncertain future is repeated over and over again across our nation? Why can’t we change...?

It's always wise when people are married - if both are working to save one of the incomes for a rainy day. If you're single, you have to be even more diligent in saving money for hard times. Nothing lasts forever, especially jobs! You get older and you get replaced. That's the bottom line. I lived it. I learned. I prepare for the future constantly and I'm no spring chicken!

Mistake: Relying on an employer to provide for you and your family. A business can close or fire you at anytime. An education and marketable skills is what a person should always have. This way, you can find work someplace else even if you have to move out-of-state or work as an independent contractor.

    • @shadowspire
      @shadowspire 5 років тому +4

@khizottt88 this is America, many who dont live here realize how long a "20 min drive is" for example I live in Northern San Diego county and my commute is 30-45 mins each day to and from work so I leave my house and have to 60miles away I leave at 6am to arrive at my work place at least 15 mins early to avoid traffic because that commute could easily turn into a 1hr+ drive. In a day I drive over 120miles in one day. And its difficult if you dont have a car, especially in Ca, because the state was solely designed get around in Cars and you cant take the freeway(highway) in a bicycle(for the riders safety.) Any vehicle that cannot reach 60mph or more is not allowed into the freeway. As for gas prices they are crazy expensive here in Cali, (highest in the nation) so if you got to commute 120 miles your car will guzzle through gas like crazy. For me personally with my small v6 truck I would spend $80.00 every week, that's $320.00 a month. I cant get a compact car because I carry tools for work. Now imagine people making minimum wage cant afford that especially if they commute that long. Even with compact car you might spend 120.00 a month just on gas. And minimum wage earners make about 1,600usd per month after taxes, then you have rent, a small condo will set you back at least 900 to 1,000 a month, plus utilities and food. Thankfully I can afford that "lazy 20 min commute, you would be glad to do on a bike" but only because I make far more than the minimum wage plus the company pays 50% of my gas bill, but there are people who can't. And taking the bus is even worse my mom worked 25miles(west towards del mar) away and she would take the bus when she was called in for work at 8am she would take the 6am take one to our cities downtown transit station then wait for the bus west bound and that would arrive anywhere fro 6:45 to 7:00. She would get to her stop and walk another 20 mins or so, her employer was fine with her being late as they new she didnt drive, I couldn't take her because I work about 15 maybe 20 miles from the U.S-Mexico border, but when I did have the chance to drop her off at work that 2hr commute on the bus turned into a 30-40 min drive because of traffic.

I grew up in Ohio. It is a manufacturing region. The best jobs are working in factories there. My dad, my grandpa, even my mom for a while worked in the factories. Now there are fewer and fewer of those jobs. I get a little sad whenever I go home to visit because so much of the town is closed up or closing up. The Midwest is really suffering and that suffering is spreading through out the country. It’s going to take more than a new president to fix these systemic problems in America. In some ways we are living like a third world county. We have to vote for people who are about the regular working people. We have to vote on all levels too. Local, county, state, federal elections. We have to save ourselves.

Automation and the globalization of industry and our economy has decimated the entry level, living wage job market. The manufacturing jobs and economy that supported workers and cities like Detroit, Youngstown, and Buffalo are gone never to return. The rise of “right to work” and the demise of collective bargaining has kept wages stagnant or low for the service jobs that remain. The middle class is slowly dying. Thanks to “trickle down” economics that has created a two tiered, zero sum, winner take all economy, there will be only two types of people in America; those who are wealthy, and the rest who are dirt poor. Welcome to the future.

So I live in ohio, and it's awful here. Unless you're ready to work 7 days a week, and break your back doing it; there's nothing for you. Most jobs (where I am) pay maybe $11/hr, and it's not easy to survive on that. In Ohio you are a slave, always on the precipice of losing everything. It wasn't until I moved to California that I realized life doesn't have to be this way. I had to come back to Ohio because my dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and it's a wake up call. I'm about to go back and live in my car, just for the opportunity for a better life. It kills me to leave my family behind, but there's nothing for me here. If anyone out there is thinking of Ohio, make sure it's what you want. Because you WILL be on the edge of destruction the entire time. No one here cares if you live or die, if you can afford to eat. I'm choosing to live in my car, rather than become a wage slave like everyone else here in Ohio. It's only the haves and have nots here.

The first mistake was thinking a single income which the husband informed was for bill paying would sustain a family. It's so important, and if at all possible to have savings. I'm not demonizing this family- I'm just considering that perhaps they could have had a safety net if the wife was employed BEFORE his lay off. I hope all works out for them.

    Poem titled To Settle Down.
To settle down with house & land:
To have a hearth & chair & everything.
The red hot coals banked in back:
A pile of wood by the wall.
I could work long all the day,
Clearing & trimming the woods all around
And making all good to the eye.
I could be restful through the night.
In front of fire with my dog,
Sure of company & love abound.
The murmuring hearth & resting dog.
A place protected from cold & rain,
    A home sweet home.

In the period of your life yup have good luck or bad luck. Some do well early in life but others do better later in life. I began my work life at the bottom of the rung status and pay wise. After years of hard work I rose economically up the ladder. I could not own a house the first year I was married. That first house was a starter home, a row home in a modest neighborhood. After 32 years I made it to the top, a good salary and a nicer car. I was five years from retirement when BOOM , out of work at 60.fortunately I saved over the years and muddled through the year, going back for retraining. I survived! However it was three years at a lesser job and less money. Finally I landed a position teaching at an Ivy League college. The year I was to retire 2008 the banks and stock market crashed. Most of my 401 was wiped out. Three years later at 68 I retired due to poor health. The following 5 years I suffered, heart attack, colon cancer kidney disease and prostate cancer. My retirement and savings were wiped out. Today after 60 years in the workforce I am facing bankruptcy. Life was never meant to be fair.

Stuff like this gives you a clear understanding of how inequality works. How Capitalism and exploitation works. How everyday people are the pawns within a system that was put into place to make sure inequality and suffering stays prevalent. These are real stories dealing with real people with real issues who are struggling to feed their families. In this poor unpredictable economic climate, starting a family isn't a wise move to make. It wouldn't benefit you in the long run if your finances aren't secure enough to withstand the potential of an economic collapse; which leads to massive layoffs. In all actuality this country was built exclusively to highlight the rich and exploit the poor. Just look at all the suffering around you, do you think that's by coincidence? The pain and suffering alone validates any questions one would have about what America is and where its headed.

Now in 2019, most bank tellers have at least a B.A., and an M.B.A. or similar graduate degrees are a standard requirement for senior positions in management. There is very little or no room in the labour force for workers who dropped out of high school or who only have a high school diploma. Even college kids are applying for entry jobs in the service industries, and if you can't operate math-based computerized machines on a construction site, you're screwed.

@J P Exactly. Here in Canada, the Campbell's Soup Factory closed because it could no longer pay employees who were high school dropouts $60/hr to pour soup into a can. The company was passing on the costs to the consumers, and the price of a can of Campbell's soup at the grocery store skyrocketed to almost $4.00/can. People began to buy cheaper brands of soup and of course, the company's shareholders screamed. At a Goodyear plant in Québec, they were paying their employees (again with high school or less) $50/hr to test rotate tires. That plant also closed. At the beginning of the 20th c., industrial unions achieved great things for workers everywhere, but as the century progressed, they went mad with the collective bargaining and priced their members right out of the job market. They forgot that corporations had also gotten bigger and more powerful, and that if they got fed up with the grasping demands for increasingly expensive benefits, there was nothing to prevent them from upping stakes and going to places with cheaper labour.
