I had already made a few phone calls for my sprinkler pipe that’s cracked. After watching your video im on my way to Home Depot for materials to do it myself. You’ve earned a subscriber sir. Thank you!
Primer doesn't "clean it all, basically). Primer causes a chemical reaction that binds the pvc. Just don't want a diy'er to skip the primer because he bought new, clean PVC.
It's tetrahydrofuran and acetone. It can certainly clean but the main purpose is to plasticize. Also, if it doesn't get fully clean, any grit will likely bind in with the dissolved PVC and glue.
Man thanks for the video! i fixed mine earlier and i was close to calling someone to repair just because i was hesitant on trying to do it myself and not knowing what to buy. But it turned out great it was messy but i got it done. Thanks alot i saved me some money thank to youre help!
Instructions not clear. Neighborhood under water now. Might need a video on how to fix it. 😅 Im a rookie attempting a diy with the same issue. This made my life easier. Thank you brother.
I like this technique of using that short insert piece since getting a full size piece installed would be impossible. And it's not under much pressure so it should be fine. Great tip!
Quick important note before turning water on... I followed your video and thank you for it, however, if you have a high pressure pipe, the manufacturer states the following: Allow 15 minutes for good handling strength and 2 hours cure time at temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit before pressure testing up to 180 psi. Longer cure times may be required at temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit or with pipe above 3 inches. DO NOT TEST WITH AIR. I made the mistake of testing my fixed pipe within 10-15 minutes, and it did run for about 1 minute before the pipe burst!!! It wasn't a bad damage as I just had to cut a longer length and get new couplings, so now I am waiting 2 hours minimum before I test my fixed pipe under pressure.
The single piece repair kits have rubber seals/o-rings that can fail over time; your repair method is a better way to go. I'd use thin nitrile gloves to keep the primer and glue off of my hands and otherwise clean. Other than that, it's a good video. 👍👍👍
I saw a video made by a Plumber who recommended not using those ratcheting pipe cutters on pvc. He said that sometimes those tools can cause a linear crack down the pvc pipe. He recommended cutting it with a hand saw. I’ve used that ratcheting pipe cutter tool in the past and it worked out great for me. But I am guessing that if you are cutting a lot of pipe, it’s only a matter of time before it catches up to you. And then you have a shit storm on your hands.
@@gp9164For thin pvc plumbing, the ratchet isn’t advisable. But it’s fine for irrigation pipe. Also, not sure why he didn’t measure how long the new piece needed to be before cementing the two couplers.
Thank you very much! The “irrigation Specialist” would do well to watch your video. He had a couple of mild tantrums today. He left without completing anything. So I’m headed to Home Depot tomorrow to get the parts I need. I’ll check back when it’s done.
@@PilotJon I just finished the project successfully. The hardest part was opening the cans of primer and cement! ha. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your expertise!
Yes! It was great that you showed how to bend or flex the pipes. I had been puzzling over how to do that. And you didn’t seem worried about getting the purple primer on your hands, which was reassuring.
2 things, let it set up for 30-45 minutes before putting water on it and it's a little easier to wrestle in a longer patch pipe - I like to put the couplers on the patch pipe so I'm spending less time on my knees, but either way works.
I have done this type of repair before, on a corner piece, but I didn't know how to place the middle piece in a straight line. Your technique is to just lift them up to insert the middle piece, smart. It just needs digging more along the pipe lines.
Inside ca ter ridge on most sized pvc fittings are consistent. The fittings you're working with is 1 inch Glue should be used on both pieces appliance of fist piece out of wind. Also a 1/4 turn is all that is needed. Nice video!
"Can't find my measuring tape" LOL what you did is exactly what we do in the field as professionals. Even if you started to use a measuring tape you'd end up with dirt and debris in it after so you're better off the way you went.
Thanks for the tips! Mine is rough because it has decades of old roots encasing it...:( Any tips on digging out the sprinkler line when there are roots all around (these are hearty tree roots)?
I just repaired mine and letting dry for 24 hrs. I’m thinking if removing a couple downstream heads to allow any dirt that may have entered so it doesn’t clog the heads.
I hit a 3/4" PVC irrigation pipe with a pick.water kept coming out slowly even after I shut off the valves. Tried flex tape but still had a small slow leak. Didn't want to resort to having to use a coupling for just a small hole. Hopefully I can fix it tomorrow. That aught to teach me to be careful around irrigation lines. 🤪
Wow such a great video lesson on fixing these leaks! How would I fix a leaking stove pipe sprinkler that goes up straight and down? You had me worried using that sawzall with your foot so close by!
Oh that’s brutal! There is a tool you can use to run a new hole from one side of the driveway to the other. It’s really inexpensive also. It uses water psi from a yard hose. My fear and the reason I won’t publish that, is if it doesn’t go smoothly (large aggregate) you could create a hollow space under the driveway and that would later possibly cause a cave in, though likely minor it’s a tough job
Check for a spare run of PVC next to the original run under the driveway. It should stub out close to where the original one comes out from under the driveway. This is what I learned when I had my entire driveway replaced. The concrete guys said this is a common practice in case the original line goes kaput! Made sure I had a spare under the new driveway and capped off each end on about a 3” protruding stub.
Not a good way to do it, since you have very little pipe in the unions. A better way is to remove the stop in a union and slide it on. You have more of the pipe grabbing.
There should be sleeves that are not tapered, so that you can slide double deep on one side then insert full length pipe, then slide back, for 100% sleeve penetration.
