    I. From Nowhere
    II. One Note
    III. Come Up Breathing
    IV. Submerged
    V. Missed Your Calling
    VI. The Great Nothing
    One note timeless
    Came out of nowhere
It wailed like the wind at night
    It sought no glory
    It added no meaning
    Not even a reason why
    No thought
    No need to say something
    No message to sell
It played without a buzz or a showing
    Out of the great nothing
    It came without fail
One man with his mind full
    Trying to get somewhere
He thought, "Man this thing could fly!"
He had good intentions, even some feeling
He thought, "Lord, I've got to try ..."
    No thought
    He had to say something
    His message would sell
He got a buzz without knowing
    Into the great nothing
    The boy slipped and fell
    Come up breathing
    Up from the water
    Man, he was so submerged
    Where's the feeling?
    It must be way under
    Far from the spoken word
No, no - no corporate ladder
    No hometown parade
The fat cats just keep getting fatter
    What does it matter
The thing must be played .....
    One note timeless .......
Don't let the buzz get you down
Don't lose your memory or you'll sink fast and drown
But you can't seem to sleep for the thoughts in your mind
Since you can't stand to think you have one hell of a time
Hanging with submergers you drink yourself blind
    You think it's fine
    You've got time ......
    The boy has got potential
But he's never had commercial success
    There's flies in his ointment
There's Stuyvesants and liquor on his breath
We'll have him charge the gate
We'll have to set him straight
We'll have him seal his future fate
    Before it's too late
    I worked with him closely
It must have been ten years ago
Of all the pains in the asses
    He's the worst
I've had the bad taste to know
    He's undirectable
    Completely uncoachable
But perhaps we can put him in an altered state
    Before it's too late
See the writing on the wall
Once the man who had it all
You threw it all away, look around and nothing's left
    You've got nothing to forget
    No golden yesterday
    'Cause you missed your calling
You could have lived up in the sky
You missed your calling every time
Watch the lady throw the rune
Have her come up to your room
    She comes from Montreal
    There's no limelight only line
    And Tequila's made you blind
It's time to lose it all
    'Cause you missed your calling
You could have lived up in the sky
You missed your calling one more time
    Yeah, you missed your calling
You could have lived up in the sky
You missed your calling every time
    The boy has got potential
But he'll never have commercial success
    We gave him good direction
But he always thought that he knew what's best
We tried to set him straight
His calls will have to wait
We tried to change his future fate
    But now it's too late
Something keeps telling me quiet now, quiet now - quiet now
Mother says quiet down, quiet down - quiet down .........
    One note timeless
    Came out of nowhere
Just when all hope was gone
    And nothing matters
    But that it's breathing
It ends as it has begun
    No thought
    No need to say something
    No message to run
    From the ashes
    Out of the great nothing
Without a buzz or a showing
    Out of the great nothing
    With nobody knowing
It plays on and on ...

Very few songs deserve to be 27 minutes long...this is one of them. Chock full of great ideas, and more importantly, all tied together in a way that makes sense and never bores or overstays its welcome.

I'm really glad, that i had the opportunity to see SB-still with Neal then-playing this song live, absolutely effortless and on fire.... It was the V-Tour back in 2000, the band was peaking and this particular show was the best i have ever seen, from any concert of any band i've ever seen (including such as Queen - WITH Freddie, Metallica, Genesis, Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen, Pain of Salvation or Porcupine Tree! ) ...

Indeed. An epic tour de force (not a single second of self indulgence with every music tile perfectly inlaid, plus one of the finest, if not the finest itself, guitar solo by Alan Morse), very meaningful background story and bitter lyrics, the ending still gives me chills after almost 13 years

There are 2 sides of Prog Rock : the one represented by difficult, complicated and evolutionary play style (ELP, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, PFM, U.K., Porcupine Tree, Anekdoten, Opeth, Wobbler, Steven Wilson, some of Mike Oldfield etc) and the other represented by simplier and easier style of play (Genesis, Marillion, Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, some of Peter Gabriel etc). I am 100% CONVINCED that the 1st side is the RIGHT DEFINITION OF THE SUPERIOR / FUTURE-LIKE KIND OF MUSIC WHICH IS CALLED "PROGRESSIVE ROCK" and I thank GOD for that...

I'm interested in prog, for sure, but I'm interested in synchronicities, too. I found out about this album because of the strange coincidences (?) with the Symphony X album also entitled V. Which is brilliant and proggy, though probably not as prog as this. I will be buying this album for the sync alone. But I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I would have loved to hear Zappa produce this one. This song has always reminded me of a cross between YES, Zappa with a dash of The Flock. (not flock of seagulls) I wish the lead part at about 17:00 would have been done with the style of Billy the Mountain at about 25:00 minutes into the song. (playground psychotics version) Starts out quiet and slow and builds. Well, can't have everything. Great song.

Kick myself all the time now for not catching this band. Listen endlessly and have pre-ordered an autographed copy of the new one. So I am hooked! I have no excuse as I have attended hundreds of shows and this should have been one of them. Closest I got to any of them was NDV filling in for Fates Warning's drummer.
Porcupine Tree, live in a small club - was like a religious experience for me. Really twisted my head off, and could not get the sound or images out of my head for weeks!

To bad Neal left the band high and dry....leaving them to fend for themselves and all albums after misses that spark Neal gave it. On the other hand his solo music is incredible. Check it out.

I agree with the idea of the song and it's structure having something to do with Kevin Gilbert; Toy Matinee, Thud, suite-like structure. I also hear music elements reminiscent of Ambrosia-especially LIFE BEYOND L.A. in there...NOT a bad thing.

If you like this, you might checkout Haken - Affinity. The best I can describe it is kinda maybe: Yes + TOOL. Amazing album.

    • @TheJuicyTangerine
      @TheJuicyTangerine 8 років тому +1

I wouldn't say it's similar to Yes + Tool. It's similar to Dream Theater in the atmosphere that Haken tries to put out, but with much more Jazz and influences. Affinity is an album where Haken tries to take you back to 1985 in a retro/cyberpunk kind of way.
I think Spock's Beard reminds me a lot more of Yes in terms of atmosphere and sound, with a hint of Christian Rock influences.

Genesis, Porcupine Tree and Queen ok, but all the aforementioned names can't hold a candle to Spocks Beard, Mentioning shitallica, in particular, upon all comments sounds offensive to the masterpiece epic above and its authors. The only good thing about crapallica is the tattooed "drummer" 's wife. P.s. i was in Pratteln in 2000 too ;)

I wasn't comparing these bands and their musical styles...I just compared the fun that i had during those gigs. And if i had to do a list of the most entertaining gigs i ever attended, then Metallica would be up there amongst the best ones, no doubt! Metallica was such a blast!
And one of the worst gigs, now that you mentioned it, was Porcupine Tree! That gig was so static, no interaction with the crowd whatsoever, they just played their songs as if they came from a CD!
    Weisch wieni mein? ;-)
