That album cover is awesome. It looks like a classic Hipgnosis by the master himself, Storm Thorgeson. RIP

A friend had dropped this CD off the summer of '99 and I was taken aback. Being a YES/Genesis disciple these guys were there 100%. I couldn't stop listening to this album. Like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Haven't had that feeling again to date.

Not a super big fan of Moon Safari but I like the others. You should check out Magic Pie too(especially their epic 20 minute track "change").

The harmonies in The Healing Colors of Sound pt. 2 are absolutely beautiful. Showed it to a friend who doesn't even really listen to prog and now he's hooked on them.

This has been my first proper exposure of SB over the last few days, and I've come to the conclusion that "My Shoes" is my favourite thing I've heard from the album. This entire album has been pretty fantastic but My Shoes stands out to me most. I've got a lot of catching up to do

    Melt the ice by summer
Turn the grass from green to gold
Live the greatest story ever told
    Don't mess the sacred mother
    If things go wrong
    Hey, it's all right
    But don't kid yourself
I know what you'd really like
You'd like to be in my shoes
    Wouldn't you now
    Wouldn't you now
You'd like to be in my shoes
    Wouldn't you now
    Wouldn't you now
    Melt the ice by summer
Send the critics down to NBC
    'Cause I'm the will
Of the world that's about to be
And you'd like to be in my shoes
    Wouldn't you now
    Wouldn't you now
You'd like to be in my shoes
    Wouldn't you now
    Wouldn't you now
    [III. Mommy Comes Back]
A baby was born in a small town yesterday
He's a magical child with a cosmic death ray
But his mother always wanted to play
    Such a long way down
    But mommy comes back
She always comes back to get me
Mommy comes back, she always comes back
And she never will forget me now
    The baby grows up
    And soon becomes a kid
    Spends his whole life explaining
The things that his mother did
    Then they say she went
    And drowned
    Such a long way down
    But mommy comes back
She always comes back to get me
Mommy comes back, she always comes back
And she never will forget me now
    When she came up
    She'd looked better
"Look, dear, I made you a sweater"
    Now it's all done
    They live up in Monticello
    With some pizza pockets
Some papers and a case of mello-yellow
But don't go in celloe - such a long way
Run when you hear the cello
You're in for a long stay
    Hey, hey
    But mommy comes back
She always comes back to get me
Mommy comes back, she always comes back
And she never will forget me now
    [IV. Lay It Down]
    Children yet to be born
    Don't you mourn me now
'Cause the crows are in the corn
Lay it down, lay it down
    Old man's on his porch
    His house burning down
When he passes you his torch
Lay it down, lay it down
    And the young man comes
    To beat his drums
    And the old man sings
'Here it comes, here it comes'
    And Newsweek's featured
    Everyone by now
Lay it down, lay it down now
    Lay it down
We built this house of cards
    We can tear it down
When it hurts don't take it hard
Lay it down, lay it down
    And the wildman brings
    His wild man things
    While the press keeps
    Pressing on the pressure king
    And the drums are beating
    Everywhere by now
Lay it down, lay it down
    Lay it down
[V. The Healing Colors of Sound Part 2]
    One man said in sign
Don't you want to feel O.K.?
And the sighted man said to the blind
Don't you look at me that way again
Don't you look at me that way again
So they shared a glass of wine
And they started to feel O.K. again
Then one said one more time
Said 'Don't you see there's now way to win
Don't you see there's no way you can win'
But you can turn around to the healing colors of sound
Just turn around to the healing colors of sound
    Old man's ship won't sail
Don't you think they've failed by now?
You can't just turn your tail
No, you can't go home that way again
No, you can't go home that way again
But you can turn around to the healing colors of sound
Just turn around to the healing colors of sound
But you can turn around to the healing colors of sound
Just turn around to the healing colors of sound
    [VI. My Shoes (Revisited)]
    Melt the ice by summer
Turn the grass from green to gold
Live the greatest story ever told
And you'd like to be in my shoes
    Wouldn't you now
    Wouldn't you now
    [VII. Urban Noise]
    [Instrumental]

This album was the first thing I had ever heard from Spock's Beard, back when it was new. Somebody sent me an MP3 of "Crack the Big Sky" over AIM (remember that?), and I purchased the album immediately. They remain my second favorite band to this day, behind only Genesis. These guys are amazing. Oh, and post-Neal SB doesn't exist. True story. You can't convince me otherwise. Stop trying. I tried, I really did, but they sucked after he left. He truly was the soul of the band, and the genius behind the writing. His solo stuff has it's moments for sure, but it's not the same. The real magic came when he played with the other guys in the Beard. Nothing lasts forever, I guess.

I watched them in my home town yesterday. Ted Leonard on lead vocals. He was fantastic. Neal is a great musician but I can promise you that SB are just as incredible now as they always have been. In fact, the audience seemed to respond even better to some of the newer songs.

They're definitely different after Neal left but I have to disagree with you. The Neal era is the most solid but the Nick and Ted era have some of my favorite songs of all time on them. it's not the same but have two spocks albums ever been quite the same? this is worlds from the light or tKoS. Snow is miles apart from BoD. Not saying you should give them a chance but the soul of the band is still there and it isn't in one person and if it ever was that still wouldn't be one but three people: Alan, Dave and Ryo

Day For Night was my introduction to Spock's Beard. On several tracks i instantly heard what they were trying to do. It's a great release but with songs like Gypsy which to me is the first country/prog song ever and Distance To The Sun ( I love both songs ) it's understandable how it went under the radar especially coming after a release like TKOS which kicks major ass. Keep progging, progocto!

I got this cd for christmas from my sister, and it is a great listen, you can tell that the beard were trying to fit into the mainstream somehow on this album, which unfortunately didn't work out, but it also somewhat affected the quality of the album, which is why many this album doesn't have as much attention. However they did massively improve this on V, (one of Neal's highest points in his career in my opinion.) But this album is a great beard album, along with tkos, and bod. prog on! :)
