The fact that he can play so many instruments and was a studio musician?... John Paul Jones is an absolute monster and way overlooked I can't believe they did "Unledded" the first couple years without him...
To see Gilbert just play a couple of chords and listening to jpj playing a mandolin solo just tells you about what music is really about not like today’s rappers dissing one another. This is an excellent guitarist who chooses to stay in the dark not drawing attention to let a part of music history shine while he just sits there and enjoys himself
Rappers don't exactly put a lot of skill on display in the first place so riffing each other is all they have. They don't show vocal range, many of them have ghost writers, I mean it really makes sense. There isn't a lot for them to appreciate about each other. And I'm not riffing on rap here, this is just the truth of the matter.
I'm sitting on my back porch right now, after another incredibly difficult and draining day, and feeling it all melt away as this washes over me... I come back here often as it is comfort food to my soul as my mind drifts back over nearly 50 years of life's winding journey since first hearing this song as a young boy. Thank you, JPJ, you are a class act!
One of the real treats of UA-cam for me, aside from the actual content, is reading comments and finding real gems that are worded so eloquently as yours is here, John. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment.
My son used to play piano and violin (he was a classic orchestra musician), after listen Led zeppelin Going to California he fall in love with the mandolin, and told me that was his next instrument. Sadly he pass way too young, but every time I hear this music I close my eyes and imagine him playing.❤️😙
I love when people do this - praise someone for being respectful in a situation where they would be an absolute moron Not to be. “Paul Gilbert’s not an idiot ! He laid back and let it be a mandolin piece! Genius !” Wow
Always thought John Paul wasn’t given the credit he deserves for all the great music he made and his own special contribution to the band Led Zeppelin!!
This is why Zepp, was, is, and will forever be, the greatest band of all time. I can't think of another band, except Floyd, who's music as an instrumental can be equally has beautiful as the recorded version. I hope to live in a world one day when JPJ is no longer under-appreciated.
JPJs is such an amazing musician. With Paul Gilbert here, together sharing with us this masterpiece of music. Paul's expressions watching JPJs play and both leaving a lane wide open for the other to shine. This is how it should be .
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant got most of the notoriety in Zeppelin, but none of either one of their solo efforts could compare to Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin had a magic blend of talent that can never be replicated and all four members were necessary to create the magic. And hats off to Paul Gilbert for being the perfect musical sideman and not letting his ego interfere with this performance.
There is good, there is excellent, there is outstanding, and then you pass beyond the degrees into sublime. Jones and Gilbert have taken this to another heaven. And all my life I thought jones was a great bass player - I realize now that he’s a musician par excellence.
Everything about this 5 minute video is just pure beauty! 2 incredible guys at a pretty damn big venue playing beutiful music, while a big crowd listens and watches in complete silence. Absolutely incredible!!!
all i could think when watching this is he's literally singing through that mandolin, theres no other way to describe it, you just feel it and understand what he's [putting across.
I love how Paul just laid back and supported John Paul Jones… That’s a sign of respect… You could also tell that John Paul Jones turned up his game a notch in the presence of Paul Gilbert… His playing on this one is better than the original! 👍❤️
Too good! Zepp ain't nothing without this low key guy! Zepp is and will ever be my favourite band of the 20th century, and it's looking like the 21st as well.

Excellent moving rendition of the song. Paul Gilbert did a great job of honoring the song. John Paul Jones is more then just a great musician... it’s almost as if he IS music. Any musician in close proximity draws inspiration from him, and their own talent reflects off Jonesy and returns to them in a way that encourages more and more from within themselves. It must be an incredible feeling to be lucky enough to play with people like that. ...and when you have not one, but FOUR musical masters of that caliber come together... you get the might Led Zeppelin!!!
Damn that was sweet! Didn't know Jonesy made such good guitar (or in this case mandolin) faces -- with Zepp the cameras almost never panned to him, what a shame.
J P Jones wasn’t given the spotlight that Jimmie, Robert and Bonham got. What a wonderful performance this is and what a fabulous band we had for too short a time. They’re still my favorite rock band, I’ve been listening to them for 50 years now.
From what I remember the band did agree he was the most naturally talented musician in the group, that's saying something coming from that lot - just glad he's created clips like this for us to enjoy, beautiful track.
Well, considering that his onstage presence was quite muted compared to his bandmates it seems as though he didn't crave that limelight as much, but what do I know?

John never got the true recognition as an absolutely amazing and versatile musician on mandolin, bass and keyboards, overshadowed by Jimmy and Robert.
