    So nice to see drifting for walleye. From the late 70s through about 1990 my dad and I spent many great weekends fishing the western basin. I miss my dad and all those times on lake Erie. I won't even go if someone asked me to go trolling. They will never understand the excitement of drifting. Thanks so much.

Let me know if you want to space anytime. I'm in Nashville now getting a bone marrow transplant and won't be able to fish for a while. But let me know. • @jimreynolds9180
    @jimreynolds9180 5 років тому +1

    So are you just casting and letting it sink and just allowing the drift to drag the spinner instead of reeling it in?

    • @RLester331
      @RLester331  5 років тому +1

      Jim Reynolds we do both. Early in the morning we found fish suspended high in the water column so cast and retrieve was the ticket. Then later in the day the walleyes went deeper so cast let sink then just tighten the line and let the boat pull the lure

    • @jimreynolds9180
      @jimreynolds9180 5 років тому

      I'm new to this type of fishing only did it for the first time last season. I guess you would need a pretty good speed to your drift to just drag like that otherwise you would have to cast and retrieve to get blades turning...am I right?

    Hey man nice catches! What size/color Erie were you running? And do you attach a weight to get the lure down to depth? Thanks. Headed out on Sunday so just looking for a couple tips haha

    • @RLester331
      @RLester331  2 роки тому

      I like 3/4 oz purple or gold depending on the day and yes we add an inline weight on snaps in front of the Erie derie to get it down in deeper water. I will use anywhere from a 1/2 to 3/4 oz weight. If drifting in bigger waves and deeper water. Good luck

    Great vid PTF, I'm fishing Central as well. I typically troll as much as possible this time of year and it slows down considerably or, you have a 1/2 ride just as you said (right over fish). I want to drift more this season so I made up some "weapon rigs" I noticed in your video that you are using a deerie with an in-line sinker about 18-24" ahead. Is that right? Is that deerie a 3/4oz? I'm subscribed bro, good vid quality your buds are chill and your gear is 💯.

    • @RLester331
      @RLester331  5 років тому +3

      Joe Smith yes we use 3/4 once deries. So hear is what we come up with. Usually not always at first light the walleyes are high in the water column so no weight as the morning goes on or if ur marking deeper fish add the weight in front. So to determine the amount of weight is really the wave conditions and how fast we are drifting. This particular day I want to so we were I. 3-4 footers and drifting at almost 2 mph. So I put a 3/4 once weight in front and keeping the lure just off the bottom. We have had many days tho where no weight was needed and might only need a 5-10 count and you were in the zone. I keep weights from 1/2- 1 once in my box to adjust for conditions. Glad you enjoyed the video! Oh and the particular lure I was using in this video was a demon eye from bass pro. Just like a derie but better paint jobs. My buddy was using a derie and didn’t have any problem hooking up either.

      @@RLester331 and Joe Smith Last season my buddy had his best catches with a purple Erie Dearie that had a red "demon" type eye. Gotta find some of those as they are unique. I only wish we could get the colored Dearies with gold blades. My best crawler harnesses have gold blades, so I would like to try that color on the Dearies. Great channel and keep 'em coming. Maybe do a pre-season lure/rig setup video?

    Does your GPS give you your drift speed?

    • @RLester331
      @RLester331  5 років тому +2

      richer4poorer yes. That day I believe we were drifting at almost 2mph. Thats why I will add weight in front of the Erie Derie. I run a braid or super line like nanofil then a floro leader usually 2foot. If I add a weight I put it at the floro and main line with snaps. Use the count down method to find the right depth. This day the walleyes were higher in the water column earlier and then went to the bottom so we added 5/8 to 3/4 of lead in front. Throw out let it hit bottom and just tighten up ur line. Pump the rod from time to time and hold on!

    • @RLester331
      @RLester331  5 років тому +1

      Chad W I do believe in this video I was running nanofil 8 or 10 lb. You just want a no stretch line so u can feel the light bites. Sometimes the walleye would smash it and sometimes it was a very little grab.

    • @CW-72
      @CW-72 5 років тому

      Great, thanks.. I haven't fished there since the 90's and my mom used to run charters. I'm taking my wife up for her first walleye trip on one of the head boats out of Port Clinton in June.
      From your video it looks like the old school methods of weight forward spinners (Erie Dearie) is making a comeback.
      I just wasn't sure if they had become line shy because of the water clarity being much more now.
