I have watched numerous videos on a lot of subjects and can honestly say this is one of the best I've seen. No unnecessary chit chat, just direct and to the point. Thank you for not showing every nail installed and board cut. Drives me crazy. Excellent job. Thank you.
I watched what seems like every video on UA-cam of patio covers being built preparing to build my own, and I must say you did one heck of a job explaining what you were doing and why you were doing it. Fantastic content you put together
Yeah that's how i felt about this. I'm smart but not super smart and really not knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff and I felt like I understood 99% of this. 😅
I have watched a ton of these and I haven’t seen anyone explain the flashing and the cutting into your siding like you did. I am planning to duplicate your efforts at my house. Thanks for the great video .
i live in a apartment for now, but man picking up knowledge such as this will help when i get the ranch, and my youtube brothers will go along with me and all the projects. thanks bro God bless.
Excellent narration and explanation thru each step. Very easy to follow along…and it looks wonderful. The most interesting part was the roof flashing. That was extremely educational!
Looks great! In the future, be sure to use a grommet in the knock outs on those metal boxes for the lights. It secures and protects the wires, while also closing that hole in the box to help keep debris out over time.
Awesome Job my friend!! You are very talented to do this almost all alone! Very well explained and lot of tips provided, especially on installing flashing. Thanks for all the info i will use those tips for my patio project.
thanks for the video and detailing your steps in building this beautiful patio cover.. my main challenge is cutting the sidings and installing the ledger board, I wish you have shown the type of nails/screws used for ledger board... I love the way you used the flashes around the ledgers and the side rafter ...
That was an excellent video. Very nice job on building and also filming and editing . This is one of the best I have seen. Thank you for putting it out.
You are an ANIMAL!! Look at YOU go as a solo project!! I remember having the gumption 20 years ago to install a 7-zone irrigation system on my 1/2 acre lot… not today… too physical for me now. CONGRATS 🎉 Great job.
WOW ! Such a beautiful job and you did this yourself. This is exactly what my wife and I want but I had a brain hemorrhage and a stroke several years ago. Having trouble finding a reliable and trustworthy contractor. God Bless and stay safe
Choosing the right contractor can be tougher than building yourself for sure. Sorry you are unable to do it yourself. I would suggest looking at the contractor's references, lots and lots of references. Read all of the reviews! It is too easy these days with social media to gauge the skill and service of a company. I'd also advise to not pay much, if any, down or upfront. Good ones are out there, just keep looking and trust your instincts and the reviews.
great job. very nice looking porch. my son and I rebuilt the original porch that had a hip roof on his 90 year old house from the foundation up. at some point the original porch was torn down and replaced with an 8'x10' uncovered deck. we wanted to restore the original look to the house. wish this video was available last summer when we built it. it turned out great, though, despite our inexperience and never having dealt with a hip roof before. we've gotten tons of positive comments from people in town who remembered what the house used to look like before we restored the outside. we had originally gotten 4 of those LED lights but that was way too bright. We pared it down to 2 and that was plenty. very easy to install, too. we went with vinyl soffit and we built the soffit level instead of keeping the angle of the roof. It took us 3 months as well, working when we could. we finished the shingles the day before we got 3" of snow at the end of October. glad it's done now! that was a huge undertaking for us.
Impressive! That's awesome. I was shocked at the light output from the cans. We mainly just use the fan lights or string lights really. Good call on using vinyl. Should last and last.
Well done. It looks great. I was thinking of doing something similar but do not know lot about rafters. Your video is encouraging. Thanks for the great tips.
Thank you! There are some really great rafter videos out there (mine's not one of them, haha) they really get into the how and why and what not. You got this!
Houses in US are so easy to work with. In Europe everything is either brick or cement, even interior walls. Love that you can do something like this and it just takes some wood and nails.
Great video, earned a like and sub I've been doing my own DIY patio cover, and this gave great steps for finishing/trimming and running electrical and is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Awesome work!
Man looks like it was constructed with the house! Doesn’t look like an Add On. The way you closed in the eaves was very easy and looked awesome!!! R&R is a great instructor/builder!! Overall fantastic job now enjoy!!! I’m guessing you will do your shed next!! 👍🏽
RR building is a dang magician when it comes to his tin sip skills. The way he cuts here cuts there, angle this cut fold here and youve got a water tight corner with no seems.
Great video. Thank you for the detail. I'm getting ready to do the same thing. Mine will be 38'x12'. My problem is HOW to attach the ledger board. What size lags? How many? And how did you ensure you were hitting the studs behind the sheer wall? (My elevation is 12'). Thanks, ~Mike
Thanks! I think I used GRK lag screws. They are allegedly stronger than lag bolts. On an exterior wall, studs are generally 16" on center - so if you can locate one stud, generally there will be another one about 16" away in either direction. I used 2 screws per stud. Good luck! You'll love it!
Great video. Nice to see regular person taking on a project like this. The pro's make videos and make it look so easy, but their pros. Great job sir. I'm trying to get the nerve to do a similar project.
I'm not sure of the bug situation in Georgia but have you considered screening in the porch? Be able to sit outside and eat dinner, etc without flying insects bothering you.
I’ve been contemplating doing this job myself. After hearing what you spent versus quotes I know I will receive, it’s undeniably worth it. This is the first and only video I have seen but like everyone else has said, well done and greatly narrated. I feel even more so confident I can do it. Any chance you have a list of all your materials? I know there are some tools I will need to get as well. Thanks for the video!
Thanks! Sorry, no real list to speak of. I just sort of imagined what I wanted to see in a particular place and used the measurements as a guide to order the materials. I usually added about 10% to the total measurements for screw ups and waste. I have more screw ups in some spots and more unused left over materials on others! haha. Tools is a tougher list if you don't already happen to own a bunch of them. Some are worth renting for a day or week or whatever, and some worth owning forever. I guess it all depends on your future needs also. And some jobs, like concrete, to me at least, I don't want to own any of the tools - it's not a job I want to do at all!
This job you did turned out amazing! Super talented. I own a home built by Western Home's. I would like to build a patio like you just did. I think it would be cool to do that around the entire back of the house and the sides. However, to do so myself would not be possible! I will just continue to admire others work on UA-cam.
This is seriously impressive. What do you do for a living? I don't think people will appreciate how much goes into making a video like this let alone actually doing the job.
Thank you! I am sort of a jack of all trades I guess. I'm at a desk job now but I just love hands on and figuring out how things tick. and, you are right, haha, editing video is way more difficult than building! Thank you again.
What a great video. I couldn’t be more appreciative on how detailed your explanation throughout the video. Question. May I ask what the total cost of this project was? I understand you said that it was at the peak of the lumber shortage however it will at least give me an idea on the total cost or a bearing rather. I’m looking at building something very similar and the same dimensions.
Thanks! Ha ha, the studs were a guessing game. Well, sort of calculated guesses. Stud finder wouldn't work through cement siding and plywood under it. I started in the corner and measured about 16" over and used a small nail to punch through and see if it bit into anything. Once I did, there was one about every 16". You could really tell if the lag screws bit or not. There was a couple misses, but relocating them was easy enough.
@@justaddwood thanks! another way I could think is to check stud from other side of wall (Inside the house) using regular stud finder and then mark the measurements
Yeah, builders are super busy and pricing things extremely high right now because they don't need the work. Wait till the economy really slows and see what they are charging when they have no other work scheduled. Materials fluctuate too so take that into consideration. But good job researching builders in your area and not just going with the first one!
I have watched numerous videos on a lot of subjects and can honestly say this is one of the best I've seen. No unnecessary chit chat, just direct and to the point. Thank you for not showing every nail installed and board cut. Drives me crazy. Excellent job. Thank you.

Nice job ,, did you need a city permit to build it ?
Yeah that's how i felt about this. I'm smart but not super smart and really not knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff and I felt like I understood 99% of this. 😅
Sweet flashing. Most underrated aspect of a project like this.
Thanks! I appreciate that. I really really didn't want to discover years from now that it had been secretly leaking the whole time.
The occasional humor and highlighting all of the important things made this a great video! I love how it turned out.
I have watched a ton of these and I haven’t seen anyone explain the flashing and the cutting into your siding like you did. I am planning to duplicate your efforts at my house. Thanks for the great video .
Thanks!
Wow, just wow!! I need a man like you in my life! Great job. Thank you.
So far this is the only patio cover with an Inside Corner that I can find. I appreciate the parts of it that you added to this video.
Looks awesome finally a video I can use for my own project. Can’t wait to get started in spring
