We built a BACKYARD PATIO

- In this video we chronicle, from start to finish, our backyard patio project.
----
FAQs:
1) Is the patio roof flat or sloped? The roof is sloped 6in from the house to the edge of the patio. This is the lowest possible slope in accordance with building codes in our area. Though not shown in the video we install 6in flashing where the patio roof meets the fascia.
2) Why didn't you show how you wrapped the columns in stone? We have a separate video where we show that process. Check it out here: Stone Wrapped Columns Video: • DIY Stone WRAPPED COLUMNS
3) What color is the stain? We use Pecan by Ready Seal
4) Did you pour the concrete pad? The concrete pad was the only thing we contracted out. We had to prep it, grade it, and do the rebar ourselves. My uncle (who lives down the street) was pouring his patio the same day and he was kind enough to let me place an order for extra concrete. It saved us money since we didn't have to pay for the truck, just the concrete and labor.
5) How much did the project cost? We spent around $2K-$2.5K on the project. Most of the materials were purchased before the increase in lumber costs.
Nice scenic view from a new favorite area of your home. Great job on the work and video. God Bless.
The algorithm sent you my way. You look like a guy I used to work with. Great video! Love your style man. Keep up the good work!
So we’ll done. Thanks for sharing
Great video just in time for my next project in about a week or so.
Fantastic work... G'day from down under!!
Great job my friend. You seem to be a very organized person. Loved the hat and the beautiful Pup!!
Wow que bonito quedo great job
You made it look easy man 👍🏽
Thanks! Definitely a fun project but not without its challenges.
Beautiful job! Thanks for sharing the video. I love the design and the stain is perfect!
Great video. I would of loved it, if you would of shown what you were doing in more detail and explanation. More for my knowledge. The patio came out real good.
Thank you! Great idea. I may do some future videos with more explanation.
Very nice.
Nice job.. looks like Texas
Great video
Looks amazing nice job
Looks really good.
I have to thank you i copy your idea but i did XL patio Roof just like your thanks for inspire me to get it done 🎉
Beautiful job. Enjoy
This is awesome !! I’m looking to build something slightly bigger with a ranch style vibe old brings huge beans kind of deal !! Good job man !!
Awesome job. Fantastic !!
Looks great!
Next project should be the flashing from the house to the metal roof and the gable trim
I was wondering that too.
Kudos to you, great looking build!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
😇👍🏼
Are the rafter 2x6 in 10 ft span?
Really good you make me do one
Must not get much snow there? Nice work
I’m jealous. What a gorgeous backyard view. Good job on the porch.
Thank you for sharing!
Enjoy
Very nice!
Your project is really impressive and inspirational. Makes my wonder if I can do something similar.
You did an awesome job,by your self wish I could have Helped ❤️
It is awesome. Thank you for sharing.
It's beautiful! Great job!
This looks amazing!
Nice job 👍
Im gonna try and make one but i have like 50% of your knowledge.wish me luck.
Great job! You didn't need any flashing where the roof and the house met?
So you put the metal roof against the fascia but did you do anything else to keep water from going behind the metal roof?
Only one who bright this up. Your supposed to flash that or something
Good stuff. Keep it up
I love it. But how are you going to keep the rain from getting in at the ledger board, since the roof looks relatively flat?
I was wondering the same.
It looks flat in the video but it is sloped. We did the lowest allowable slope per code in our area. It drops 6in from the house to the end of the patio. It's flashed well and we have had no leaks.
Yes nice video the same question. When you have a patio cover you need a pitch 1/2” fall per foot. This looks like there is no fall not even 1/4” per foot. So when it rains the water will go back towards the house. Also why didn’t you include the wrap around your posts with the nice mason work.?
I was just about to ask why he didn't slope it a little bit? Idk where this is as usual nobody tells the state it is. I'm in lower Michigan and no way would this pass code.
Hahaha very true
Does it leak when it rains? Or is it more sloped than it looks.
It looks flat in the video but it is sloped. We did the lowest allowable slope per code in our area. It's flashed well and we have had no leaks.
I dont remember him saying that he put slope on the rafters either, you need slope 1/4" per foot away from house
He said in the beginning he was but when rafters went on it did not look like its slope at all
Is1/4” the minimum ?
When he cut the ends it was obvious they were sloped, don't know how much though..
I believe a 2/12 roof pitch is recommended.
Is there any angle on that patio. Just wondering because on camera things don't always look the same as in real life. Thanks.
What did you do flashing-wise on the transition from the roof of the house to the porch sheets? It seems like I can see something at 13:41 but would like to know what you did for reference?
Did you angle the roof for rain drainage? Looks pretty flat 🤔
Great video! Thank you for sharing! what kind of slope did you have from the main house? it looked almost flat.
I was wondering he'll reply to you. BC I want to know too. Almost flat roof.
you did not cover the flashing from the roof to the metal roof.. and leaking between the two when raining?
What would you say would be a good estimate on the budget?
just wondering about rain run off. would it be better to have a slight incline so water runs away from the house? does it even matter?
Nice vídeo ! White do you live? Beautiful place !
What stain did did you use, It is exactly what I am looking for after 4 tries!!
Pecan by ReadySeal
Did you pitch the pergola for proper drainage away from the house?
This looks great. How did you go about the concrete pour?
The concrete pour was the only thing we contracted out. I wish I would've recorded them pouring the slab. The only thing we did ourselves was frame it out, grade it, and put the rebar in.
Did you add a pitch to the roof? It looks pretty flat. I dont know where you live, but snow might be a problem???
What size is the cross beam ? Same size as the posts ?
How you build the stone pillers
Doesn’t look like there’s a slope. Hope it doesn’t rain much
I need make patio cover, do you take orders from customers. I like it the way you did work
Are the rafters 2x6x10?
What type of wood did you use?
What size is the patio and slab
Did you pour your own concrete?
What kind of post screws did you use?
How thick did you pour the 2nd pad?
Can I get an exact material list
Beautiful job!!!
What is the slope of the roof?
That’s what I’m wondering. Doesn’t look like much
No roof flashing? Gonna leak.
👍
How much did you spend??????
Total cost was around $2K. We bought all the lumber way before prices skyrocketed.
Is that pressure treated ?
The posts are the only thing that is pressure treated. We didn't need to go with pressure treated for the rafters since they were sealed and covered.
Missed the column base grout step :(
That's your backyard? damn
Great job, it is very modest from you to say "We built". 😄
Is that ledger board held up with cabinet screws? Pretty sure you need either lag screws or lag bolts to hold that up.
this video should have alot more views. Solid simple way to build a porch i have been looking for
How did you do the stone wrap around? That came out great!
Whole thing looks excellent
yes! would've been nice to see that
Click on his profile name and you’ll see the other videos he created. One of them is a video on the stone wrap around.
Wow! What's the chance that im looking at pergola builds for my house. I found your video and realized that I was next door helping clean Patties pool with my father in law Omar, the day you were starting this project. I remember seeing you out there. Small world!! The little garage and tower gave it away. Looks great btw. Og tx!
What a great porch, I’d love to build one exactly like this for our home. Thanks for the great tutorial video!
Sorry to break up the motivation but he made it look too easy!!
Beautiful, you did a excellent job on the patio. I am starting one soon and I learned a lot. Thank You
He didn't do it right ...he supposed to lean up 4 or 5 metal sheets and then pull them up to tack them down
Nice job Dude, diy saved you a ton of cash and you got the satisfaction of your own labor. Those pergola builders want to get rich of one project.
I had two quotes from "pros"..one for 1400 the other for 1200....did it myself for less than 250.
What is sized of the quote?
Question for you. With your screw pattern on the tin roof and the fact you did this vertically from the house do you end up with leakage or damage to your rafters? I have seen a couple types of tin roofing where when done this way they aren’t as wide and overlap the previous panels screws to avoid this or obviously if done horizontally from bottom to top and a slight over hang from the natural roof you end up with no leakage. Just wondering if you used any type of caulking or sealant? Looks great and that back yard is going to be even more amazing when that tree you planted really grows in! Beautiful country
That is Awesome! Love it! Going to have my husband watch this video. Hopefully he'll get inspired. I've been wanting one. We also live in Texas 😊
Could you give the sizes of all the wood you used please
Cool video. However, I wouldn't wrap the base of the post in foil tape, or anything. If it gets wet (and it will) it can't air out and dry. Good work though, nice job
Thanks so much! Great video! I am thinking of tackling a couple of homefront projects and this really helped me plan. I have never done any of this kind of improvement. Please keep putting out videos! I love everything about how you film them!
It’s great and all, but I’d like to know what boards you’re using, how you attach them to each etc the details would be really great for us greenhorns
Great video tho 👍🏽
I’m really enjoying this extension of porch to stop the rain from damaging. I need to do the same. Great 👍 Job!!!
Great job, simple and clean and cozy. Gives me inspiration that I can build one in my backyard as well. I have a spot in mind. That board that was out on the home where the rafters sit. What did that rest on? thanks
Nice project, wished you included the column rock build details. Beautiful job.
Agreed, that would make for another awesome video.
He has a great video on that too
How did you secure the cross beam to your posts? Around 6:55 it shows you drilling the holes but can you explain what you used to secure them together?
I love it!! My gf and I love it! We have the same 10x10 of concrete like you did. We want to build the same porch. How much ball park did it cost overall?
We spent about $2500 on the project. This was before the increase in lumber costs so I imagine the price would be significantly higher today.
Right. It looks like it almost slopes back towards the house. That could cause a lot of destruction later. I like the look though. Good luck.
Thanks! Definitely don't want it towards the house. I made the pitch the lowest possible that the building code in our areas allows. It drops 6 inches from the house to the end of the patio.
Hi. Great job on the porch. I would have liked to see the new slab pour and the surrounds you put in around the posts. But, I still enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Do you have a total price of this project ? Looking to build something similar soon.
Total cost was around $2K. We bought the lumber before prices skyrocketed and we already had the stone from our build.
What was the cost of materials? I’m looking to diy something similar.
One of the most important parts of the build, and you didn’t even show it…how you flashed the metal butting up to the gutter board!
Very nice tho u didn't showed how you did the pad extension or the beautiful stone around the 3 support beams
Good work. Can you tell me the stain color and brand name . Thanks
Pecan by ReadySeal
1st...the hateful smartass comments need to go.
2nd..if less of you who wrote the critical comments had read all the comments, you would have realized he did everything he was suppose to do for his area,
3rd...if you have nothing nice to say, why bother commenting??
4th.. you did a fantastic job. By the way, what size did the finished product end up being?
This is a great video. Loved it
But i would like to know how much you spend on this project? Thank you
Total cost was about $2K. We bought all the lumber before the prices skyrocketed and we had the stones leftover from our build.
