I absolutely adore this series, Vince. It's a fascinating blend of painting advice, colour theory, and history lesson. I think you've really pinned down a great format. 😁
An offhand comment from someone in my gaming group has led me to seek out intense pink and yellow to paint a full "oh my gosh my eyes the goggles do nothing" Emperor's Children mini. I knew I had to hear what Vince had to say on the topic.
A master class in grey would be a good addition to your series Vince! Everything from Zenithals, Desaturated opaque mixes to how to use muted opposing colors for color harmony in a composition. Great and informative series.
Jon said that you where like, super knowledgeable about alot of things on his podcast. Hearing you go on the mini rant about pink and gender and the pink tax made me realize he is right lol. Also the answer to pink in the middle is "blue"
I painted my tyranids with pink carapace (or rather, starting at black then shading into magenta then pink) as a way of adding more colour to the field. It suits them well.
There is usually a reason for the price markup on pink/women's items. For example the process of creating pink colored plastic requires higher temperatures and longer processing time to achieve proper coloring of the plastic than, for example, blue does. The blue colorant used for plastic is also one of the cheapest.
So two obvious problems there. 1) There are many items that are pink that are not plastic and still suffer this tax. 2) Women's items do not need to be pink or that color. There is a choice being made there. :)
@@VinceVenturella The plastic was just an example that felt relevant. A mans and woman's deodorant from the same brand might seem like they're the same, but contains different ingredients and therefore have slightly different price.
Another great episode of my favorite series. I would like to suggest a future topic. I wonder if you could explain mid tone. why it matters, how to be deliberate about it, is it something we need to plan or establish with shadows and highlights. It could be an opportunity to go over the “1,2,3,4,5” concept you use a lot in the pmp review.
@@VinceVenturella awesome guide also. Your guide on teal set me down a path with painting I had not explored yet. This one feels like it’s doing the same.
So that is me repainting my pink squig. I had a play around and yeah I'm to reliant on white for highlights. Squigs are great for colours. I'm doing the teeth like a yellowy green. But also want to make it feel alive and not to cartoon, woth some earthy elements.
Thanks Vince! I continue to really appreciate this series, the exploration of color that it prompts. I need to find something to paint pink - like, now! :) Happy holidays!
Merry Christmas, Vince. Hope you are fully recovered and have a nice rest over the holidays. I can't thank you enough personally for all your videos that really motivated a beginner like me to keep going.
I just hope you had the best holidays. Your vids are both educative and entertaining... Heck I even replay some parts to teach English grammar to my wife. Thanks for all the material you've put up so far. I'm really looking forward to watch your next collaboration with trovarion ;)
I’m trying to do synthwave necrons - Really struggling with the fluoro paints with coverage through the airbrush, working from a fluorescent violet. With a brush it’s almost impossible. What’s the best way to do vibrant magenta/fuchsia schemes?
So I’ll do a whole video on fluorescents, but the key is to have a bright undercoat. Golden liquid fluorescents are the way to go through the airbrush. It’s really all about the paint, Warcolours, Golden and Scale 75 are all solid, but you have to paint white or something close first then fx.
Don't close the wet palette all the way when not in use. It creates a humid situation that can cause the paint to get too wet. In the end, each brand of paint behaves somewhat differently, there isn't a way to ever completely stop it, but you can certainly remix them in most cases.
I was thinking back to this series and I'd love to hear about greys (not the aliens - the colors) because, although they get a little partial screen time in black and white tutorials, and probably more about terrain and stone, they don't get "their own thing" and their place in my painting mind is probably not as big as they deserve. They are more "default" colors if needed for something else, for me. Maybe I should paint some X-Wing? Just a thought!
Unique shading and highlighting for Pink huh.... Thanks Vince you're still the best. How would you go about making a digit looking camo on let's say a jetbike for Eldar?
Hi Vince, I am currently painting the harem pants on the underworlds hedonite models. I was curious, do you think that the Daler Rowney fluorescent pink ink over a zenithal highlight would be a good base to then highlight up with lighter pinks, and shade down with violet ?
I have mainly fantasy and games and scalecolour paints, have recently brought the fx fluor set, so was curious what colors i could utilize for an intense slaanesh pink cloth :D
I had planned to pick up some of the basic sets at a convention this year, but obviously that didn't happen. I am sure I will get them at some point. :)
Really enjoy this series Vince, the depth of information is always impressive. How long do you spend researching these and what kind of resources do you use? The history you provide is fascinating.
It's a few hours of googling and reading articles. I try to find interesting articles written about the color and it's history and lift a good narrative to piece together. :)
Main points were (I think, haven't rewatched since this morning) 1) start with a good bright undershade that instead of white on top in a zenithal prime, is a nice pinky flesh tone. 2) highlight with sunny skin tone or ice yellow mixed into your midtones. :D
If you're looking for a bright/fluroescent pink like I was The best ive found is Golden's High flow pink. It's so good! Edit: I consider magenta and pink to be the same color. Please dont hurt me, it says pink on the bottle >.>
Just my 2 pence's worth, Molotow do a nice bright pink (and purple) in thin paint acrylic bottles (hint, hint Slaanesh fans). They're a German company but we have a Molotow shop here in Madrid, Spain and they seem to be very geared towards graffiti art (legal of course).
After having watched the whole series so far about colors, I now wonder what's the use of white as a base coat and as a color/value... feels totally useless. You might consider making a video about black and white, sir. Thanks for the very good work!
Oddly the price mark up on pink items is for a reason, there is no low temperature cheap plastic pink pigment, unlike blue or black, so pink items do cost more to make.
So here is a good article on why that's not true - money.usnews.com/money/personal-finance/articles/2016-02-17/the-pink-tax-why-womens-products-often-cost-more The plastic is a little more expensive, but of course, that's alright assuming the end point, we could just as easily not color the items pink. :) There are also a lot of items that have the pink tax that aren't made of plastic. ;) Hope that helps. :)
@@VinceVenturella It is an interesting subject, touches on marketing, psychology, physiology and material science. The more of these exploring colors videos I watch the more I see the similarity between painting and cooking. Yes you have favorites and in the right combo they can work, but, some are just bad. Some nauseating, and some are just plain toxic.
Absolutely, painting is very much cooking, that's why I always push back on specific recipes, because it's really more about how you utilize the ingredients than the ingredients themselves. :)
Always highlight yout tomato soup with coriander! Always put a spot of ginger in any dark gravy! Chocolate is great for chili, cinnamon fir Ragu Bolognese.
“Insert name of color here” is a fascinating color. :D
I mean, in the end, they all are, that's the trick. :)
Same with "insert colour" is a great colour to use for painting.

Well said. I find myself coming back to these for the sheer joy of it
Love this series. Also the answer to “should it be pink in the middle?” Is yes
Oh yes, anyone cooking a steak beyond Medium is wrong.
in my country, when someone overcooks a steak we have a saying "This cow died in vain"
It still trips me out how so many colors can be highlighted with something that isn't just a lighter tone of the base. Great to see it in action.
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
Best thing about pink? You can preshade with it for yellow and orange.
Yep, absolutely true.
For sure, it's my absolute favourite base tone for yellow minis. It looks goddamn awesome.
