  • The family of 41-year-old Denise Smith gathered in a Pierce County courtroom Friday afternoon to learn the fate of her murderer, 29-year-old Army Ranger Spc. Patrick Philip Byrne.
Byrne was sentenced to 20 years in prison for beating Smith to death in 2021. Smith was working as a security guard at a downtown building along Ninth Street.
“I’m never going to forgive him for what he did,” said Dennis Mack, Denise’s older brother in court on May 10. “I hope he catches hell where he’s going. Only problem is, I won’t be there to see it and enjoy it.”
In court on May 10, Smith’s loved ones spoke directly to the judge, expressing anger and grief as they described who Smith was, and how much their lives have changed since her death.

This soldier became intoxicated and then beat a woman to death?? I must be missing something.....thousands of young men get intoxicated but seldom does that result in actions like this, especially considering he was military. And what about the guys with him? Did they fail to intervene? Sooooo tragic. Many questions......

If you thought you would get all of the answers from a video less than 2 minutes long you are mistaken. Do some research if you're that curious into the mind of this murderer.

So his entire excuse is that he got drunk… oh and he had a brain injury (which he knew about before he got drunk).
Instead of taking accountability for his choices, he wishes that he was never there that night.
    Make it make sense.

The judge agreed to the lesser time because he pleaded guilty and felt remorse for what he did. Watched a video online of his sentencing and he addressed the family of Denise and how sorry he was. It doesn’t bring back Denise or lessen what he did, but at least admitted he was guilty and sparing the family of a trial.
