My father in law grew up in El Salvador during the civil war, he watched his friends get strung up in trees, and at 14 illegaly came to the U.S., on foot. He never finished middle or highschool, worked in kitchens his whole life. Didn't stop him from buying a house and providing for his wife and his kids, who are all now doing great and college educated. A bad childhood is NO excuse to be evil.

    • @SoteOsrs

He said "throw the book" idiot, not abandon. Try not making words up and it might make sense, because "throwing the book" in this context would mean his parents would want him to be held accountable and receive the max sentence. My parents would never beg the judge to show me mercy. That doesn't mean you don't love or support your child.. or that you've abandoned them. Why does this have to be explained to you?

Luckily, I realized I didn't want to escalate further and end up like them, so I broke away. I became a loner, went to school, and served in the military. It's just in your character what kind of person you are. This teen needs to go to prison. This was his choice. He could have broken away or not escalated it further by trying to kill that woman. That's not an attempt at reforming him, it is taking the best years of his life in return for having shot this woman. I'm not here to dispute if that is a good or a bad thing, those are merely the facts. An attempt at reform would direct him to undertake a mandatory program of reform and demonstrate that he was making changes to his life, sentencing him to whatever confinement would permit him to undertake this and nothing else in his life until complete. You do not reform people by sending them to prisons full of the worst types. If he had fallen in with the wrong crowd before, he will now be exclusively in the company of bad people. Well, let's see: it doesn't actually deter murders, for one. It is extremely costly to try and to battle on appeal and costly to warehouse people on death row, for two. It's barbaric for the state to take a life, for three. It can't be undone when there is a wrongful conviction, for four. I'm sure there's more but this is the UA-cam comments section for a news video so nevermind.

Because that never worked in human history. Crime rates are down across the board from historical data, yet the punishments are far more lenient then they were. That implies there is zero correlation with the sentencing and prevention of crime. If anything, based on historical trends, it ironically would suggest a negative correlation (more severe punishments leads to higher crime rates).
