    If anything, this is a reminder of Walter and Donald's frightening standards. For one thing, the sound quality is much better than what survived of 'The Second Arrangement'. An amazing groove that would fit nicely alongside the other released 'Aja' tracks and it would be a real treat to have Steely Dan play this live as it is, as there would be no vocal strain or awkward keys to be concerned over.
    It ain't broke so it don't need to be fixed!
    But what do I know, I'm not Donald Fagen.

      Not so much lost in his work, but lost in how his bass actually sounds like that through the console. Yeah, say it's his fingers all you want but there's something else going on. Mutes on the bass....or the year of the bass? An old Fender that just has a special sound. Extremely clear and thumpy.

      @kz1000ps 2 роки тому

      @@telsutton You overthought this waayyy too much. It's a simple sticking pattern that Gadd used with countless artists and still sprinkles into his playing today. By definition if you're paying Gadd to play with you then there's a good chance he'll layer it in. Secondly, considering most drummers end up playing the same basic pop/rock/dance beats over and over (95% of Steely Dan grooves are exactly this), why the heck would they can a track because the drummer they hired--who's considered one of the absolute best in the world--played a beat that has some distinction? Your comment is perplexing.

    • @kz1000ps
      @kz1000ps 2 роки тому

      @@johnvalencia9927 You know if they didn't like the drum part they would've had Gadd play another 70 takes until he plays something they like? I have no idea why they didn't follow through on this track, but I have to think the drummer playing a pattern that wasn't "original" would've contributed to their abandoning this track by what.... .003% ?

    Done in a time when there was no Pro Tools, no computers, no machines sequencing anything. Pure sonic bliss in every sense of the word! But knowing what perfectionists Fagan and Becker were, they knew something wasn’t “right”with the track. Either that or some A & R guy at ABC Records didn’t have his hearing aids inserted that day.

    Too bad vinyl had such limited space for songs. Aja was awesome, and if this song (and others) could have been added, it would have been (pardon my language)... awesomer. All this song needed, with its motion and tight syncopation and fusion-ey elements, were provocative guitar and sax solos, perhaps as a soloing duet?
    The very last flip of the wrist on the old pianner makes me think, intro to Peg?

      Ymous Anon As gorgeous as this is, it seems to be a hodgepodge of musical ideas that became 'Aja,' or they culled the ideas from 'Aja' to make this cut. Either way, I can listen to this every day!

    Wow. First time i have ever heard this and I was listening to Can't Buy A Thrill the year it came out. But strangely, I am unmoved. Unless they had plans to embellish this with "lots of stuff," it's a very ordinary, shall we say (luckless) pedestrian track?

    This sounds very much like "Here at the Western World", or at least the breaks do. They both were being thrown around the composing palette about 1977-78. Anybody?

    • @joecool9978
      @joecool9978  7 років тому +1

      I kinda see what you mean Doug,But with Jim Gordon playing drums on that track it puts the song somewhere around 1974,Closer to Pretzel Logic. Though it sounds like a Katy Lied tune.At least to me.

      I think this song would have been a great transition song from the song "Royal Scam", the last song and title track to the Royal Scam album, and the song "Black Cow", the first song to their next album Aja.
