St. Augustine proclaimed that “Man” had free will to act on his own, but, God determined all things. And, Kulee Baba is a dance to honor and remember the elders who have passed. Yet, this song escaped placement on a Steely Dan album. I agree with others here that this song sounds a lot like Teen Town….thanks for listing this great dance track.
The rabid fanatics that cast dissent to the garbage heap are the same ones who toss Can't Buy a Thrill onto the same forsaken pile. That said, Kulee Baba is the greatest song that's ever entered my ear holes and no other sound or vision will come close to the orgasmic heights I flew to in the four minutes and 49 seconds that this video was playing. OH wait, the Schlitz Jingle just came out, never mind this song is trash compared to that masterpiece.
Donald’s lyrics are so amazing. Such a poet. “My suit is a bright Irish green. The color and cut are striking. I’m something of a standout in the crowd”. The storytelling and movement in his verse sections are always so freakin cool
My opinion is that the song feels directionless. The groove is the best part but the melody is aimless and there's no dynamic or story. I'm glad it was left off Aja.
On of their best songs ever? I'm a die hard fan and never liked this tune. The other outtakes from these series of songs are much better in my opinion.
@@Jerry_England1 Yep, this is Bernard on drums. You can so clearly hear it in the drumming, and also in his count in. The version with Jeff on drums never surfaced, I'm afraid. I would have loved to hear it. It would have been significantly tighter, which would have been an interesting thing to hear. Also, Marottas version would have been cool to hear.
Like Ian Dury said in the "Aja special" this music couldn't be recorded anywhere than where it was recorded :that is CALIFORNIA, and he added that when he heard SD he heard the cool sound of Coltrane, Mingus etc etc and of course the mellow sound of SD music. So great music. Diving into the ocean and cooling down with the Santa Ana winds👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Amazing. Definitely the best restoration available. I've been listening to your FLAC file for months now, but never gave a proper thanks! It's amazing how well Anthony Robustelli was able to copy this for his cover without access to resources like these. True shame we'll never get a full version, but I'm sure past generations would be in tears to know something this well mastered would ever be available to the public. Well done, friend, here's a new sub!
This song is FUN! There’s almost a Barry Manilow/Love Boat campiness about the hook, and yet it’s still cool sophisticated Steely Dan all the way! 👍🏼🎸🎼❤️😎
Each time I come across this track I get angry on why it didn't make the cut. Aja was already a masterpiece but this would have elevated it to GOAT status.
Maybe because it doesn't sound like a classic SD song? This tune wouldn't fit on any of their albums, which is probably why they didn't release it. Now, 'you got the bear' is a different story
Sounds very much like Purdie on drums, sounds very similar to the drumming on the royal scam! Marrota has a heavy dirty feel and Porcaro is laid back and very smooth and balanced feel.
Despite my love of LP’s … the decision to cut tracks from a record always bugs me. Although I wonder about the bands decision to cut it from the record - style and tonality considered - and maybe too wrong for Gaucho. But despite all of that… this track flippin rules and is one of my new favorites. ❤. Bear, too
I think it would've been good on some type of album of theirs, not so much Aja but if they didn't temporarily disband after Gaucho's release, I think a more complete version could've found a home in an album from that alternate timeline. It just needs some polishing, a few horn tracks, lyric reworking/finishing, and it'll sound greater than what we have here!
@@BleusAudioArchive this sounds so dope - just wondering if you've heard the Anthony Robustelli album of these tunes? His horn parts for this tune are sick.
That's actually coming up next! Though, it probably couldn't be improved upon all that much since it's already in a pretty high quality by itself. It might not be done for a while though since I'm on vacation at the moment..
Hot take... I can see why they left it off the album. Its just ok. Musically sure theres some cool stuff happening, but it just doesn't hit me. Sounds like something from a few years beforehand. I mean, they left I got the news on there but at least that has the sick Micheal McDonald breakdown section😅
that "unter gtr" is distracting. The charm's in the spareness of the searing single gtr. zstill it suits 2024 zeitgeist .. talking heaps for fear of silence
Forgive me, but we know why SD didn't include it on Aja, it sounds almost like a parody of their work and - to my ears at least - is really not up to snuff. They did the wise thing and forgot all about it.
I don't get the "parody" bit at all. This song has a better chord progression than "The Second Arrangement," and lyrics are funnier too. With a little studio polish, the song could have easily held its own on _Gaucho_.
funny how an outtake is better than about 99% of music ever produced by other acts.
Indeed, better than anything ever produced by any other acts.
@@cameron_fairchild yes much better steely bdan just so good

That's YOUR opinion. Not a fact.
This should have NOT been an outtake!!
The chord progression Gm7 to Eb7 for the “i preserve great moments” and “sweet holy Jesus” parts are amazing.
Makes me
Cream
For sure. And what’s the progression round 1:09. It’s got a nice mysterious feel to it. Actually, it begins at 1:04.

Thank you John for explaining this. I've enjoyed this song for many years, but did not pinpoint the specific proclamation from St. Augustine.
The fidelity and correction is striking.
It's something of a standout in the crowd, isn't it? Glad you enjoyed it!

This is SO GOOD! Steely Dan's outtakes are better than some bands' greatest hits.

I was thinking THIS might be my favorite SD song, but actually ALL their songs are my favorite as are all of Matisse's paintings my favorites
Steve Khan - git, Don Grolnick - Rhodes, Chuck Rainey - bass, Jeff Porcaro - drums, Donald Fagen - voc
Bernard on drums on this one. The Jeff version has never surfaced, unfortunately. Also, the Marotta version also never surfaced.
If you ask me, this has one of the best Fagen vocals on record
The chords are just so amazing
Similar to the title track from The Nightfly. But not the same.
Yes, very lush and with lots of suspensions and that Rhodes piano... it feels minutely layered. :)
I love the uploader and everyone who is watching. Love you all.
Thank you, man. It really means a lot and makes me more glad to have put this project up for you all. Nice username by the way.

reminds me of 'Not The Same Without You'...i'm evolving at at a really astounding rate of speed ....then...'my mind is sharp, and my spirit sound'
But most Steely Dan lyrics were by Walter Becker. That was his role the Becker/Fagen songwriting team.
Bro did not write this. Had to be Walter
my fav lyric is bring my voice up a little bit now
this track has always been considered a Gaucho outtake.
One of my favorite songs from Steely Dan, drums intro is highly reminiscent of Teen town
The chords too
Yes, agree, the drumming has a kinshiup with Teen Town - and the entire groove feels close to Glamour Profession.
Absolutely incredible, it doesn't sound like he's peaking the mic anymore!
That original recording actually had some intense clipping in those sections lol
To think I'd be able to hear this song so clear, ah the wonders of technology! Great restoration my dude

My pleasure, man. My pleasure.
Fact that we still get updated/upgraded versions of outtakes/unreleased of the band from 40 years ago is lovely
Absolute masterpiece.

How did this badass song not make it on the album?? The chords are fantastic.
My opinion is that the song feels directionless. The groove is the best part but the melody is aimless and there's no dynamic or story. I'm glad it was left off Aja.
@@oranjuly Yeah it's hard to find a place for it to fit on Aja, though if it replaced I've Got the News, I wouldn't be complaining lol
They found something better? Plenty of good Steely Dan stuff.
Just found this in conjunction with your remaster of "The Bear". Two of my favorite Dan throwaways finally sounding nearly perfect!
Glad you like them! It really means a lot! These two songs really meant a lot to me as well.
The Bear is delicious, can't understand why it didn't make the album

This song is so good it makes me want to puke. Honestly a little better than the Second Arrangement
Agreed. For me, the best outtake/demo/unreleased SD by a mile or five

Probably the only mention of the country of Cameroon in all of rock music (outside of Cameroon of course).
