What makes this version of the song so sad and somber for me is how you can draw a parallel between the original and this version to real life. This is an old song, and if you notice, the crowd is full of people well into their adult years, they've grown old along with it. The original is fun, exciting, and full of energy, just like when you're a young teenager. This version is slowed down, the energy and "youth" of it is gone, but in its place is a tenderness and an almost haunting and melancholic tone to it, which is indicative of getting older. You slow down, you've expended your energy, you're less upbeat and reckless, but you're more aware, sensitive and tender, and what was once the youthful thoughts of invincibility and now replaced with a growing realization that you don't get to live forever, and time is short, growing shorter every day. So needless to say when i look at this song in that way, it adds this extra sad depth to it for me.
Hi, Ken. When you say people's singing along..... we were not singing actually. I was very fortunate to be there and we were kindly asked not to sing/shout/clap at the end of each song cause they were recording the album live. They cut, restarted and replay some of the songs during the two gigs, on two consecutives nights. They were amazing. And yes, plenty of Goosebumps moments. It was Summer of 2017. What you see behind the stage is not a screen but real Norwegian midnight sun and nature.
Amazing to hear how close Morten's 60 year old voice is to his 24 year old one when he first recorded this in '84. He can have little "crackle" and "hesitation" in his voice when going for the money notes. In my opinion - one of the best pop songs ever recorded along with a truly memorable comic book presentation.
you know when you know a song so well, you've heard it so many times, that you really prefer to hear it with passion like this, you want to hear the ''imperfections'' as some would call it, I'd call it real.
I agree with you. It makes the song stand out much better in this stripped down version. Awesome performance by the band. And it's a one take, live performance.
This video came out the same year I did...of the womb lol, so i grew up with this song and video on MTV and VH1 and I always loved the song and the incredible video. Each of these versions are spectacular in their own special ways. The riff is really fun in the original and Morten's voice hits a different part of my soul in this version.
I was dancing to this song when I was young. GenX here. It's very memorable. But listening to this version, wow. It's like a GenX's love letter to the next generations. I suddenly found myself in tears listening to this version.
Brilliant contemporary/ballad/jazzy type sound. The vocals were identical to the Masked singer take. If... any judge were a you Tuber or a voracious researcher, then they would have had him pegged on the spot when he sang the song. That said, the soul and emotion in this rendition, is with the right marketing/publishing a MORE age old vintage number than the Pop version. Do note that the Take on Me of the 80's is ICONIC - period.
I think this version sounds really good after thirty something years especially for a wiser and (slightly) older audience like me. The lack of the usual highest notes has made this one a little ... I don't know... sadder.
Mad World - Gary Jules : "Mad World" has since been covered by various artists, including a 2001 version recorded by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules for the soundtrack of the film Donnie Darko; a 2003 single release of the song reached number one in the UK for three consecutive weeks and won Orzabal. I really love this version. And this version from a-ha, I really like it.
This brings memories. I saw them at Magic Mountain when I was like 15 or so. I would be interested in you listening to Nightwish - Ghost Love Score live at Wacken. I think you'll love them.
Nice reaction Ken, I agree, this stripped-back version is great! BTW, you're thinking of Gary Jules, who covered Mad World for the movie Donnie Darko. Also, please take a look at Snarky Puppy, featuring Lalah Hathaway - "Something", Lalah is incredible!
Speaking of stripped down versions - have you seen Marc Martel's vox & piano cover of Bohemian Rhapsody ? It's obvious why they used his voice for the movie.
If you like the song Mad world you should watch Adam Lambert's cover of it when he was a contestant in American Idol. A cover can't get better than that. BTW One of my favourite old artists Richard Marx is still active and doing concerts and his voice is just as good now as it was back in the 80's. You should check him up.
Love these reactions! Man! I would love to see you do King's X "Goldilox" or "Summerland". Studio would be easiest to find. Also, Skid Row's "Wasted Time" always blew my mind how he (Sebastian Bach) would go from singing, into screaming, and back into singing in one solid breath and measure... crazy.
Morten Harket has admitted to be a bit addicted to the in-ear system. So much so that he forced himself to be on The Masked Singer UK to shake the addiction off.
@@asbjrnl.srensen3781 in-ear er det artister har i ørene for å kunne høre seg selv eller inspillt lyd for å hjelpe og holde seg til rett noter, for å klare å høre noe i det hele tatt når publikum er ville.
@@asbjrnl.srensen3781In-ears let you customise your own sound mix in the terms of hearing some instruments more and others less. It also lets you hear a “click” or metronome which musicians use frequently during concerts to stay on the same tempo during performing. Talking about the 80s vibe, would be interesting to see a reaction to some synthwave (a nu-retro genre), like The Midnight. They've done some stripped down stuff live, but usually they're a duo (singer/guitar+drummer/synths) with a guitarist and a sax player when they do live shows. examples: ua-cam.com/video/M8QZKoS57eI/v-deo.html or FM-84 ua-cam.com/video/cHaZRJHRKLw/v-deo.html But really anything from either is fantastic IMO.

Please do some reactions of one of the greatest vocalists of all time: Steve Perry. You can do all the popular ones but I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts on the live 1981 concert in Houston of "Mother, Father." Amazingly he sounds even better live than in the recordings. Second request would be to react to the live cover version of "Sound of Silence" by Disturbed on Conan's show.
Please react to Katrina Velarde and Sam Mangubat "Turn to You" ua-cam.com/video/OA9NCt-N6Uw/v-deo.html. Filipino singers. You will really be blown away!
Which is exactly why they should rearange the vocals on some songs, but they don't. Only this accoustic tour the did in a few places but still not enough. There is a fantastic opportunity to focus on his rich lower range and they're missing the mark.

I'm so jealous. It's great to have your moment immortalized, being recorded.
I am so jealous, this was an amazing performance and concert. The way this song was performed gives a whole new perspective on the lyrics.
Yeah, I woudnt want to "sing along", just mouth my words and listen to the magic, every crack and hesitation, and pure note of memories

Nostalgic!!!!! This song was in my prime. Very nice to hear the original singer sing his song live after 30+ years( this was in 2005 though).
What do you mean this was in 2005 ?
This performance was 2017
Yes I really enjoy these stripped down versions of stuff.
He didn't go into the really high part but I honestly didn't miss it.
