Totally agree. Doesn't get enough recognition. Not to say A-Ha are obscure by any stretch, but for me, Morten belongs in any debate about who the greatest ever male pop vocalist is, and I don't feel he gets mentioned enough in these conversations.
I always laugh when people say Ah-A is a one hit wonder.🤣
Everything Morten sings is magic.
And he can still sing today.
I bought two of their albums and they are magic front to back.
I didn't know they kept singing until recently.

Take on Me isn't even their highest charting single in the UK! (They've had 9 top-10 hits there and loads of others.)

True. For most A-ha songs the backing vocals are subtle, but they bring to much to the sound.
Morten has one of the best vocal ranges out there

He did this in a duet with Allison Moyet for their MTV Unplugged set...just incredible.
Great reaction Beth! I hadn't seen this video before. Indeed, Morten Harket has one of THE most spectacular voices (even still!). This such a beautiful song.
I highly suggest more a-ha - you'd likely know their hit 'Take On Me', but they did an unplugged acoustic version in 2017 that is amazing - and really highlights how Morten has taken care of his voice.

That’s a guitar, not a uke. It has six strings and a longer neck. Although, the body is as small as a uke, so it’s a fair question. I was actually taking a close look at it when you asked that, because I’m really intrigued by it and was trying to see the logo on the headstock.
It's a G-Sharp OF-1. It's a Musical instrument in the guitar family, invented in 1997 by the Norwegian luthier Øivin Fjeld: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-sharp_guitar

The best singer in the world from the best band in the world - A-HA live. Such a criminally unappreciated band who i have loved since in 1985 when take on me was out. I was 16 then and i’m 53 now and still love them just as much. This is what real music is about for all you out there who gave up on A-HA after the take on me days i hope this makes you realise just what you’ve been missing. A-HA have a huge back catalogue of music. Take on me is just the tiniest tip of their musical iceberg and another thing that’s cool about A-HA is that none of their songs sound the same each one is different and has its own personality . Summer Moved On was about them splitting up.

Especially considering that he had a break in his voice in the recorded version. I've never understood why they released it like that.

@@JustMyOpinion1010 wouldn’t call it a break, but I know what you mean, he has done it live without any change. One reviewer I read at the time of the single accused them of artificially extending the note on the studio version. I was a few feet away from the front of the stage when he performed that note live without any little wobble.

You should listen to their albums. Big in Europe. Also, unknown in the states except for one song. This one is from Minor Earth Major Sky. The entire record is fire.

@@markwebster7435 In a 2020 interview when in Australia, he spoke briefly about the note - saying he was bored with it being the focus and they chose not to include it in their set. He also did a single note during the Hunting High and Low concerts at the end of Stay On These Roads for about 17 seconds. I think he could still do it.

@@matlig885 La France a cessé de s'intéresser à a-ha à l'époque d'East of the Sun-West of the Moon, au début des années 90.
Les filles qui bavaient jusque là devant Morten et Magne les ont trouvés "moches" avec les cheveux longs et la barbe (il y a eu beaucoup de cœurs brisés chez la gent féminine dans mon lycée à l'époque), et les médias qui les avaient catalogués de boys band pour midinettes prépubères se sont trouvés fort embarrassés de voir que le groupe avait évolué vers un look moins poster boy et une musique plus rock, plus organique et avec moins de synthé.
Et comme en France on aime bien mettre les gens dans des cases et les y maintenir...
Morten is an unbelievable singer, is like “come on dude, that’s impossible”. And he does…
One of my absolute favorite songs. Both melancholy and uplifting because of the soaring notes.
And this isn’t even his best performance of this song, for sure. I don’t think he nailed THE note as solidly as in other performances.

I was drawn to that voice from the first time I listened to Take on me, in the 80's So I'm a lifelong fan. His voice is very unique.

Great analysis. A-ha it's a so undermined band. They made great songs but with no too much publicity. I have a lot musicians friends and a few more in my family. The most of them told me (and these are not my words) they say Morten Harket is better than Freddie Mercury. They gave me many reasons why, but they know more than me. What I can say and I've seen A-ha live three times, live I've seen Morten doing things that Freddy never did. But for me they're different.
This guy, as you said do many difficult things to do as a vocalist. You should hear Take on me live on Vallhalla, I wish I care (studio version), Shadow Endeavors, Dark is the night. Rolling Thunder live in Buenos Aires, Scoundrel Days, Living a boy's adventure tale, White Canvas, Solace....
Yes!! Freddie Mercury, who? lol...Morten can sing circles around Freddie Mercury! Freddie always just sang it straight, the same, mundane stuff, the same way. But as you said, LOOK at what millions of things, and sounds and styling, and effects, and hold, vibrato, tremelos, etc etc, on and on, Morten comes up with, to ad nuances and passion to each and every song!! They all sound so different!!! No one is like Morten!!! He is amazing and the most unique voice ever to be!!!!

Fun and true story:
Teemu Brunila, then in Finnish band The Crash, once played at the same festival as A-ha. He approached Morten Harket and told him: - "I think you have one of the best voices in pop", to which Morten replied - "I know".

Pål Waaktaar - the guy playing the guitar - was the main composer in A-Ha. He also wrote this song.

Every a-ha concert I've ever been to, has been a massive singing experience involving the entire audience. It's been a while, but I used to be able to hold that note, too. Days of wonder, they were.

I've always been able to hit and hold that note for the same amount of time and then hit the next falsetto or high note without any effort, but I'll never have a voice as beautiful and melodious as Morten's. Very exciting coach react from one of the best bands in the world.

I don't think so. I've read about his vocal range but there's something special in his performance. Technically you can have the same vocal range but not the same talent to use it. That's what I meant.👋

I’m so glad he went on the Masked Singer as this bought him out of his shell to perform again.
An absolute marvel seeing Morten still being able to carry this note for so long. He's knocking on now and you can clearly see it takes a lot out of him. Very impressive.

Thank god you discovered him. One of the most underrated singers alive. Absolute one of a kind. Was in Prague when I first heard an early Russian bootleg of the album but, traveled to LA to see what was to be a one of the final concerts in 2010 or so. Used my iphone to stopwatch the held note with my musician friends joining in as well. Morten did it live too and BEAT his own record, it was unearthly. Hairs in places I didn't know I had hairs stood up. Tusen Takk Beth.
Morten will always be in my heart as the BEST singer, BEST LOOKING and the best character. Dig deep. I wished men are like these nowadays. A-ha can move audiences to tears in many of their songs. There is a magic frequency with Morten's voice. He just takes us to another emotional bliss. ❤️❤️❤️
