- Today on Modern Builds I'm making a matching DIY metal & wood dining table set. The two benches store directly underneath the table top for convenient storage. A little Woodworking, a little Metalworking.... something for everybody.

Everything you make, I want
TheSuperHero Isi
TheSuperHero you ain't never lied! Lol
He should sell furniture also
That is a needy thing to say lol.
then pay the price
Woodglut has a very large project base.
Thats a lot of faith to put in 6 screws in softwood. That said the look is fantastic.
silveravnt agreed I would have boxed around the table to support it from the bottom
I agree I would gave added a second steel piece underneath just like on top.
I was thinking the same thing and was looking in the comments to see if I was crazy, or if others thought the same as I did. Good to know I'm not crazy.
It's a great looking design, I really dig it, but I would be worried about it holding up over time. Then again, I tend to crazy over-design things, and assume that something like a table is going to need to support the weight of a Mack Truck at some point :)
I wouldn't have used any screws, black duct tape is better
SayWhaat red duct tape or gtfo
nice but i wouls recommend screws on the side too, to lessen pressure on top screws especially on the chairs. nice work anyways
Love this book! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxpCNxqmAkyjN6NPx1fyB7QiEFWyO5mUWL it is simply one-of-a-kind! I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. Amazon was great, they delivered on time. Thank you!
So, are those screws carrying all the downward force?
Maybe dado the bottom of the bench/table and run another metal strip underneath?
Looks like it, I'm wondering how long it will last, especially if it's an outdoor table

You wouldn't need a full 4" wide strip underneath. Simply add 4 small blocks on the inside and at the top of each leg. The way it is now it's definitely going to fail at some point down the line. If there's a dog or small child underneath when it fails it could be very damaging. Might take 10 years and exposed to the elements but it will fail.

Late to the party, but I’m gonna weld a piece of half inch bar stock inside the legs (bench and table) just below the wood to bear the vertical force. Invisible, and probably stronger than the screws.
I am sure you can still buy handbook with all info you need on woodprix. Just google it.
Stopped watching because of all the product placement....Ugh!!
Oh, how the sponsors must love you!
The Michael Bay of woodworking videos!
How do you mean?
Written from my awesome LG smartphone that's connected to Verizon, America's most reliable 4g network, while sitting on my super comfy sofa from Wayfair.com.
This looks great!! Add some support under the wood tops - all the weight of a person sitting on the bench or leaning on the table top is being held by the screws at the moment. Some small welded tabs would be discrete and do the trick.
Simple but effective. Only thing I would do differently is spray the metal as I don’t like how it looks where you’ve used the angle grinder to smooth out the welds. Apart from this I love them. Added them to my ‘to build’ folder... 🙂
Smudgie33 or use a fine flap disc on grinder for the entire outside surfaces
Anyone building this would do well to add a 2" x 2" L-bracket to the inside of each leg of the benches and table for support. Screw the brackets to the legs with a flathead machine bolt, washer and locking nut and also into the wood with a heavy pan head wood screw.
What NIOSH particulate rating does that mask have? I went through their technical information on their website and I couldn't find anything about it.
Also, I would think twice before using this mask in an environment exposing you to welding fumes. Literally says "Do not use for....silica, etc..." in their technical information on the first page...welding fumes contain silicates in the mixture...so I would reevaluate your use and statements as to not mislead people to improper use of a mask just because they sponsor you.
Yeah as soon as I saw how comfortable the mask looked, I had to research it. From what I found it’s not NIOSH (OSHA) approved.
Its rated to .1 micrometers. Too bad I need one for .005 micrometers to handle the silicas I deal with. This mask looked really cool though.
@@JV-ph7en what did it for me what the easy to don Velcro on the back. Immediately thought to myself, there's no way you can get a perfect seal with that type of attachment mechanism
I’m honestly thinking about still getting one just for the wood working hobby. It’s probably good enough for any sawdust or sanding particles.
This looks awesome. I love the look of exposed steel. When I don't have a cutting fluid at hand I take some oil with a high smoke point (peanut, sesame) - it's not perfect but it works better than drilling without any fluid.
Good tip haha!
If you add another metal under bench, it will not only provide strength but also work as reinforcement for wobbling.
Looks awesome, but do you have any problems with the wood drying and shrinking? I have made a few tables with constriction lumber and have found that if you just screw them the wood will shrink and crack apart. I am curious to know if other people have had that same problem or if it is just because of the grade of wood I buy?
thomaswithpie I build with construction lumber a lot as well. I haven't had too much trouble if I let the boards acclimate to my shop or the room the project is going on beforehand. It doesn't stop it completely but it's helped a lot.
It's not just construction lumber, it's all lumber. However construction lumber typically has a much higher moisture content then what you'd get from a hardwood dealer, so it will typically move more initially as it dries out. You can avoid this by drying it out yourself (it can also warp while drying, so you should by ~20% more than you need). Could take a week to a month laying around in your house, just depends on a few factors. And if you already have a planer/jointer like he does here, the cost of cheaper rough hardwood isn't much more than construction lumber and (IMO) look nicer. But all solid wood moves. There are sheet goods that are dimensionally stable, like plywood and MDF.
The table top joinery on this channel is often problematic and many of his designs would be greatly improved by simply designing for wood movement.
Like on this design he should make his dado on the side of the tabletop about a quarter to half in deeper than the thickness of the steel. You'd still have a flush look (most of the time) but the groove would allow for more movement. His screws in the middle are fine but the end ones should've been something that allows movement. Such as a elongated slot through the wood for a bolt to pass through to a small piece of metal underneath to act as a sandwich to hold the top up but still allow horizontal expansion.
Do you really endorse rz mask? Had one, pinched nose hard, failed to cover face properly and inhaled dust quite a bit. Invested in a real dust mask and never looked back at these trends
Прикольный комплект! Только жесткости не достаточно, на мой взгляд. Надо с внутренней стороны приварить элементы усиления.
Nice build. I wouldn't use that mask to protect you from welding fumes. Welding fumes are toxic and you need a special mask to stop them. I've always liked the 3M welding mask, they're specifically designed for welding.
I HATE masks. They’re uncomfortable, often painful on the bridge of my noise, don’t fit well with my glasses, and fog up my glasses. After seeing your sponsorship spot and checking some reviews, I’m hopeful for the RZ mask and ordered two of them. One for me and one for my 11yo son who helps me in the shop. So, thanks. The ad worked. Hope your sponsor sees this. :)
0:13 using a literal stop "block" xD
Great design Mike! Wonder how it would look with some maple or oak...
Hey Mike! Just an FYI the code modernbuilds doesn't work. Still got the masks though 😷 😷 😷
Wow, very nice .If you can import metal table legs in China, we will be your best choice. The price and quality will make you very satisfied.
Dude, you fucked up your finger. Was that during that long as commercial for the mask? Nice table BTW!
So many cameos. I especially love the shot in front of four eyes garage. Man I'm pumped for this summer.
Yeah man!! It's going to be killer
You got a little Uyeda assist on this one! Awesome project as usual brother!
Your finished product looks great but had a hard time listening between all your commercials for your sponsors. Hope you are paid well.
Só eu que vi que ele não pintou o ferro
Because the table and benches are essentially hanging from the metal via a few screws, couldn't the wood just pop out given enough time and weight? It's a cool look to have the metal wrapped over the top but with no support underneath it's pretty counter intuitive.
I believe I would have welded the braces to the upper third and not the lower one because the way you did it doesn’t allow the head places of the table to be used because one’s chins will hit the brace. (I don’t know if welding it to the upper third would solve the problem because it could hit one’s knees though..)
But I get you made this to your own specifications and looks like you don’t intend to sit anyone at the head of the table (judging by the two benches) so... nice work. And good looking; I like the legs attaching to the top of the table and not under it.
Should've weld another strip of metal to support the table top from below. Same goes to the benches too.
nice
It looks great, but i don't think this table can last long. The orientation of the screws parallel with the downward weight on a softwoods really bother me. People might get hurt seriously.
Nasty screws , use a slotted heavy screws for a vintage look. Or why not run a thread rod through and some nuts on the ends?? Then the metal stays flat on top with wood. Learn to clamp wood - clamps should be opposite every other clamp to maintain a flat surface.
*what the hell is with the music? why everybody is using an annoying musci on background? can anyone move those nice looking benchs while using it? looks heavy, not practical*
Not sure how long those screws will last, the table may be ok so long as there isn’t a whole lot of weight added to the too. But those benches though...people are heavy and those six screws may not last long. You could weld 4 more strips along the underside of the benches between the legs, that would hold it forever.
I like it. but I'm concerned with the heavy tabletop only attached to the screws. aside from that. nice build
Bad finish, sexy look but wtf 😕 what's up with not painting the metal frames?
just wondering the weight distribution of chair?.. what happen if the screw that holding the chair turn loose?
Like ur video, i am new to metal working, wood and metal working together is intresting, endless possibilities i guess
It is better if you used stainless steel rather than hot rolled steel, hot rolled catch rust when water and air toch.. stainless steel looks more elegant than H.R. Steel
You can actually add up another steel under the wood and screw it from below to fix the sideways wobble
The only thing I'd change is that I would've painted the steel legs in black, just so that you don't distinguish the joints in color... :)
Otherwise loved it 😍
Dope build Mike! I'm in the middle of making a table myself.
Sweet! Looking forward to seeing it!!
should have put a piece of flatsteel under tabletop and benchseat instead of thoose microscrews
Wait... I thought all "modern" furniture has tapered legs. Where's the taper?
Rz mask page not found lol. Looks like he won't be making any money on that.
Всё конечно классно, но металл бы в чёрный цвет покрасили бы!
I know it may aouns weird but what are the brand of your boots at 1:35! I love your style BTW
nice work but those welds looked horrible should of tried to fill the voids for a cleaner finish,
Small over sight, you're holding the weight of everything up with a small amount of screws. That could lead to the benches or table tops breaking.
they mustve gotten that facemask design off the jock strap design
You shouldn’t weld on concrete. The heat can cause it to expand and explode.
I would just add bolts and nuts instead screws besides that it looks pretty good
This looks so easy, until you realise yiu don't have the proper tools.
Nice idea but I would put the steel frame under the top for a cleaner look, otherwise nice job.
What kind of shirt are you wearing? Looks soft...
Can 4 screws on each side sustain the weight of the table top?
you should put some support to the wood as it might go down in prolonged use.
At some point someone is going to end up on the ground with only six screws holding the wood UP to the metal. You will be better off had you used a nut and bolt or even better welded a strap under the wood.
I don't think so.. the legs are a really snug fit and its holding really well. then again, if it does happen, I'll be sure to post it on instagram haha
How much did you end up spending on materials?
If you put a diagonal piece of steel on each end, there would be no wobble, other than the one generated between the clearance of the floor and the table. But your aesthetic would be changed...
Yep, that'd work, but I like the horizontal piece quite a bit
What is the machine at 1:16 called and where can I buy one from? I’m from the uk. Any idea where I can get a used one from?
Thanks called a planer. they should be available at any kind of woodworking store or online
Nice project. Looked like a foureyes garage on your 20% off call. A teaser perhaps?
It just might be :)
Great video. You have a great way of explaining!
Anybody know what kind of boots he’s wearing ?
nice
You never gave the the table an on-video wobble test after the improved bracing. Did it not work that great? I has doubts.
the mask is a good mask , as long as there is no facial hair, sorry
Six screws to hold that heavy table top!!! 🤔 great design nonetheless.
Am I the only one that noticed that he is at the foureyes shop?
wow.. nice bench brother.. i subscribed already
Do you have an alternative for people that don't weld hehe
Задумка супер, но исполнение очень не аккуратное.
I'm going to save so much money... all i need is 40.000$ worth of tools!
The cost of tools on this project are way less than what the table would cost.
I know you can get solutions for that on woodprix instructions.
G'day guys. I'm curious to know what weight those three screws in the stools will hold i can't see how that would hold two large people or have you come in from the sides as well which we don't see.
The other question is what do you use to prevent surface rust on the hot rolled. I used your conference table style for a 3.6 meter slab table for my son.
I have had the slab for a few years and bought it back to the eastern side of Australia from W.A. waiting for it to become accustomed to the different climates .
Love your work
My thoughts as well. Because the metal is above the wood, there is great force down when someone with over 100kg seat on the bench and just few screws to hold the surface. I have similar design at home, but the metal is rectangular profile and screwed under the wooden surface. I guess those three screws will hold for a while.
For fucks sake, that's an infomercial
Nice build Mike! Turned out really cool. It’s great how you show how attainable building cool projects like this is for people who might not have a big fancy workshop chalked full of super expensive tools and years of knowledge. Good job sharing the craft bud!
Thanks Brother! I appreciate it
(it's CHock full, lol. But his tools do look pretty nice, and new)
is the table top being held to the legs only by the screws?
how acurate results can you get from a power planer
how acurate results can you get from a power planer
That looks really good. One of your most aesthetically pleasing builds in my opinion.
I basically just want you to come to norway and build everything in my flat.
That’s ridiculous Diy? No. Lol
I really like the design, it looks amazing. But i am a little concerned about the screws, they will catch a lot of dirt and it will may be hard to clean them.
Like si no entiendes ingles porque hablas español pero igual ves todos sus videos.
Is this Bmw in the garage yours Mike?
Man the steel must of cost around 300$ alone
U r tools verry prity looking and all are in a set ?
I bet those masks are sold out right about now
WHERE DO I TYPE THE CODE? DIDNT SEE WHERE TO TYPE IT IN CHECK OUT..
in check out on right side
Talk about a stop block..
LITERALLY A BLOCK..LOL
GOOD stuff as always Mike! Like the stell and wood look
Early congrats on 600k bro that's awesome and much deserved
20% woohoo count me in.thanks mike!
Thanks Joe!! haha!
Nice work how much? Cada una cuanto cuesta
Nice work Mike :) ॐ
Leaving OKC today... back to NY. The weather was cruddy, not sunny all week. When did you film this?? Anyway, great vid. Really like when you build with metal and wood together.
which welding machinge are you using?
can you please create a fordable furniture?
Claroooo HACELO VOS MISMO...siempre y cuando tengas un cepillo eléctrico manual, un cepillo de banco, una sierra de mesa...etc...
How does it look after a year, when wood dries? Does it warp or crack?
