I’m new to woodworking and I can’t describe how fortunate I am to have found your channel. Your videos are amazing, inspiring, and easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much, you have touched my woodworking life.
Thank you for inspiring me and my wife to take up woodworking Shara. We just made our first shelved table (almost exactly like you made the table with shelf for your dad except without the drawers). Next on the list: Modern Dining Table!
Great build! I have a friend whose son wants to get into woodworking, and I’m goin to recommend this video. It shows how you can create beautiful pieces with some basic tools and some imagination. Thanks!
Really love your channel. It seems that fewer and fewer woodworking channels feature projects and I understand the reasons. I appreciate you sticking with the projects and providing all the great plans as that is why I, as an old guy woodworker who looks for "doable without high end equipment" projects, appreciate your channel. I am going to use this plan to build a table for a family member's home. Thanks again
I seem to be repeating myself every time I watch one of your videos, but I absolutely love your designs! If there is any problem with the pieces you design for me, it’s that I wouldn’t have enough room in my home for every one of your designs that I’d like to build.
Thank you! I’m really happy with how the dining table turned out. I can’t wait to get it moved in and share the new place! Thanks so much for watching!
If you were wondering if your designs would sell, I think you have your answer: they do. You have exactly the right attitude toward the hand plane: it does something useful and is fun. So many are paralyzed knowing they might not be using it perfectly. Just use it.
The maple sure is beautiful! I like the use of forstner bits and dowels. I need more forstner bits now….lol…. This is a creative design and is unique. It’s definitely a “Shara” project that will be beautiful in your new home. Can’t wait to see your new shop! Keep on building Shara!
I’m loving using forstner bits. Who knew? I bought a set early this year and just started using them and now I’m obsessed 😂 I’m so glad you enjoyed the project and design. I appreciate you watching!
Nice job on the table! It turned out great. I love your design and the thick wood you used on this version. Your skills are growing in leaps and bounds! Keep up the good work.
What a beautiful table! That's just the right amount of 'live edge' too. And to make the whole thing complete, rubber boots and shorts for assembly lol!
Shara, once again you have showcased those creative juices. Love the scene where you are applying the clearcoat as it allows us to see those colors come to life. I really appreciate the amount of effort this project took. I have a couple of live edge planks that have been sitting on the floor for about a year. Maybe your video is enough to inspire me to do something with them. I hope your move works out well for you. My last and final move ended up with a smaller house and a big shop! I spend a lot of time out there. Thanks for Sharing!
Thanks so much! Really glad to hear you enjoyed it! This would look amazing with a full live edge I’m sure! I hope you use that slab to make something you love. We are really excited about the move…a little nervous, but mostly excited. I have so many project ideas already!
@@WoodshopDiaries Watched your video again because I wanted to see you using the dowels in your project. Dowels take a bit more time than screws but they make the project timeless, by that I mean they last forever, like 50 to 100 years. A table as beautiful as the one you just built should be around and admired for at least that long!
Thanks so much! We are excited and nervous about the move. But it’ll be good 😅 I hope ha. So glad you enjoyed the project. Thanks so much for watching!
Moving?! Very exciting. Hope you'll have plenty of shop space at your new location. Can't wait for the tour of the new place. Getting closer to 100k! BTW great looking table build!
Thanks so much! We are very excited to move, but a little nervous, too 😅 the new shop is quite a bit bigger so I’m excited for that! Anyway, thanks so much for watching and for cheering me on! I appreciate it!
Awesome table Shara. That detail between the legs and top is sweet. Congratulations on the new house. I'm looking forward to loads of videos as you fill up the space with projects you get to keep!
Thank you!! I’m planning to do some kind of video of the new place but haven’t decided what all I want to show yet 😅 there will be a lot to do to get it up and running
I love this and it actually looks simple enough as I watch you building this table. I’m thinking about making a table with walnut and I hope to find a design that’s easy enough to not waste material. I loved this one!
I just heard you on Steve Ramsey‘s podcast, not sure how I missed knowing you had a UA-cam channel! I’m excited to do one of your builds… probably this table first. BTW, I think your videos are great. They are real life, not over-edited. You provide good, easy to follow information in an honest & humble way. I totally appreciate that!
Moving, thats great, congrats on the new home. So you are selling this one? What will your shop be in the new house? A video of setting it up would be great. I love using that wood, we call it ambrosia maple. Leaving the live edge was a good touch, makes it an individual piece, custom. It looks really good. Wood that heavy, if you stub your tow on it, its your toe that is gonna give and not the table, LOL.
Thanks so much! We are excited but nervous about the move. We sold our home and my new shop is going to be exciting to set up. It’s unfinished so there will be a lot of work to get it up and going at first. Anyway, so glad you enjoyed the project! If you like the wood, you need to stay tuned for the next project as I used some leftovers to build something else 😉😄 thanks so much for watching!
What a beautiful table there Shara. The maple was a great choice. And a massive congrats on the new place. I hope the move isn't too stressful and im looking forward to seeing the new set up. 😃
Thanks so much! Moves are always a little stressful. I think this will be a good stress though 😊 we have a lot of work to do on the new shop, so I can’t wait to share!
I discovered your channel by a happy accident. And now I want to try to build ALL the things. lol. I've never built a thing in my life. Wow, you're stuff is amazing and I can't stop watching your channel.
I know your pain of parting with one of your creations, but you had the chance to do it over again and make it even better. Good luck on your new location and look forward to you settling into your new shop and all the future builds. Cheers from Texas!
Thank you! We are excited about the move. It’s been a long time coming and I really think we will enjoy the new space. Thanks so much for watching. Have a great weekend!
Wow! What a gorgeous table! Love the wood choices. I really need to invest in a table saw. Also I personally like the character edges and I would like to make this project but w live edge 🤔
Thank you! This for sure would be awesome with the whole edge “live edgy” 😍 table saws have good sales toward the end of the year 😉 may be a good time to invest in one!
Awesome build Shara! And congratulations on the move always an exciting time to one degree or another. Been wanting to build a dining table myself but it's been just me for years kinda seems like a waste of time and material. I bet it would look snazzy in cherry.
I really don’t know why nobody likes sanding…… I love it , I put on some music and I get Zen when I sand it’s my favorite part of any build project. But I guess to each their own right.
This is gorgeous. The table top (wormwood maple?) almost looks like marble. Amazing!! I wish I could convince my wife to let go of our current table :)
Dude this was awesome. It's funny as you we're attaching the legs I thought 🤔 "I'd attach some some dowels there for extra support" then you whipped put the forstner bit 😏
Moving Tip: Forget labels and sharpies. Get several colors of duct tape and use a color for each room. The boxes will get to the right room the first time and then when you need to find something you have a much smaller set of boxes to search. Good Luck.
Thanks! We’ve moved seven times in ten years 😂 hopefully this is the last for a while. Luckily we live in a one room studio home now, so we have very little to move…except for my shop 😅
Great build like always you did trick me though with the thumbnail the "character edge" I thought was a chanford* edge not sure if I spelled that right but hopefully you know what I'm trying to say
You just got lucky on the table with the glued top. If the humidity changes that table can still crack because wood can expand 15% across the grain. This table will last way longer the way you made it this time. Love the design 👌
Maybe. The old table is still perfect three years later despite being attached “improperly.” AND not sealed on the underside 🤷♀️ I believe it’s got plenty more years ahead of it. But, either way, it’s not my table anymore, so I hope this one lasts me a good while instead. 😄
Awesome. I wished I had of known about those tabs 2 weeks ago. After a month long build..my very first...desk...6 ft long..the top was where i had a slight issues on how to attach. if you were NOT using those tabs, how would you attach the top? BTW my first build...horrible..but its solid, it works and i like it. (2 hidden drawers behind cab doors and two other drawers. Also a hutch with 4 cab doors and a center shelf with lighting). I am like you, sanding and staining/top coating is pretty boring. i used only a few small hand tools... and i have no place to build anything. so backyard on a slope using a 3 3/8 hand saw, jigsaw and sander. that was it. OM also...noticing the glue you are using. I use the same one. I had watched a few other videos of guys building things, they were all using the Tilebond. UGH. It's very runny. Gorilla glue is not like that...so Gorilla glue is my fav.
I discuss this a little more in the tutorial here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-build-a-diy-contemporary-dining-table/ But there are lots of ways to attach the top. Some are “wrong” but I’ve done them before and some are “right” and they didn’t work. So it’s really something you need to just try and see. You can use L brackets, screws, glue. Theoretically, glue and screws are bad options because ether don’t allow for wood movement. However my last table like this three years ago, I used glue and it’s been fine. My thoughts are that it depends on what you’re making. For example, this table, if anything happened, the worst is the top develops a small crack. Nobody dies, gets hurt, and there’s no major damage. The table still functions fine and is useful. There’s just a crack. So you have to determine the worst case and then weigh the risk and do what seems best.
@@WoodshopDiaries oh wow..never thought of the wood expanding or contracting...ugh. I actually used screws...maybe 4 or 5 total. lets hope it doesnt crack. I dont think it will with how i did it...LOL... I didnt want to use glue because if i needed to move it, i wanted to remove the top to do that. NEVER thought about L brackets either. ok..next project. LOL Thank you Shara. You are great!
That thing is so cool, love that offset leg design. The wood is beautiful. Do you have a link, or know what plane you have? I am still at that stage where I use a lot of cheap pine for my builds and that sure would beat hours of sanding 🙄.
Great job and beautiful table. Wood movement on indoor furniture is not that big of a deal because living spaces are climate controlled. The changes in relative humidity and temps are not that great indoors. I would estimate the most that a top that size would move is about 1/8 of an inch. That said, wood moves across the grain, so the tabs are more effective if you install them on the narrow sides and allow for that direction of movement.
My brother has a dining with storage when you lift the head and rear part of the table. The dining table came with a bench with table. Is that something you can build? It doesn't need to be exactly like that but I thought it was cool to have a dining table or table in general with storage.
Oky! Please please please respond!!! I’m wanting to make a fold down table but idk where to start. I want it to be able to hold 6 people, but able to attach it to the wall and fold it down when not in use. How would I go about this??

Thanks so much! Yes, I linked the hand plane in the description 😄
@@WoodshopDiaries doh! I forgot how youtube worked for a minute :-~. Thanks!
It happens 😂😂
Great Video. May I ask , How much you spent on this table ? Thank you for sharing ^_^
Thanks so much. Prices will vary greatly by location, but I bought $400 of lumber for this and had enough leftover to make a coffee table.
Pretty lady thank you for the updates
My brother has a dining with storage when you lift the head and rear part of the table. The dining table came with a bench with table. Is that something you can build? It doesn't need to be exactly like that but I thought it was cool to have a dining table or table in general with storage.
Bonita mesa
Thank you!
Hey do you mind sharing what all the lumber cost? just lumber...
Sure. I paid $400 and had enough leftover to build a coffee table too.
@@WoodshopDiaries wow that’s great. Including the surfacing? Where are you in the US? I’m moving to NC. Hopefully there are nice lumber yards there
I’m in Kentucky. Options are slim around here. That included surfacing 👍
Oky! Please please please respond!!! I’m wanting to make a fold down table but idk where to start. I want it to be able to hold 6 people, but able to attach it to the wall and fold it down when not in use. How would I go about this??
How is the glue hold up on the table top? Is there any separation etc?
Nope still looks just like day one. I have it in my dining room
Neat.
