Chinatown is one of the most fascinating and tourist areas of New York City for decades. This is where this very atmospheric home movie by a traveler from Austria was made in 1979 - atmospheric also due to the cloudy and rainy weather. Shops, restaurants, market stalls, telephone booths, passers-by and traffic result in an old picture of Chinatown, which in many respects has hardly changed until today.
Chinatown is a quarter of the Manhattan borough and with 100,000 Chinese inhabitants (total 665,734 inhabitants) one of the largest Chinese communities in North America. In Chinatown, less than 55% of residents speak English and the streetscape is dominated by Chinese characters and shops. The fact that this trend is continuing can be seen in the expanding Chinatown district, as large parts of the former Jewish or Italian district are in Chinese hands today.
In order to preserve the Italian heritage, the Italians and the Chinese have agreed on a limit beyond which Chinese characters are not attached to facades. Today, Little Italy can still be found on Mulberry Street and Grand Street. The center of Chinatown stretches along Canal Street, but Mott Street is also a street that is strongly influenced by Chinese shops and bars and is well worth seeing.

Eines der faszinierendsten und für Touristen seit vielen Jahrzehnten anziehendsten Viertel von New York City ist Chinatown. Im Jahr 1979 entstand dort dieser - auch durch das trübe und verregnete Wetter - sehr stimmungsvolle Privatfilm eines Reisenden aus Österreich. Geschäfte, Restaurants, Marktstände, Telefonzellen, Passanten und Straßenverkehr ergeben ein doch schon altes Bild von Chinatown, das sich in vielen Punkten bis heute aber kaum geändert hat.
Chinatown ist ein Viertel des Stadtbezirks Manhattan und mit 100.000 chinesischen Einwohnern (gesamt 665.734 Einwohner) eine der größten chinesischen Gemeinden Nordamerikas. In Chinatown sprechen weniger als 55 % der Bewohner Englisch und das Straßenbild ist von chinesischen Schriftzeichen und Läden geprägt. Dass dieser Trend anhält, sieht man am sich ausdehnenden Stadtteil Chinatowns, so sind große Teile des ehemaligen jüdischen oder italienischen Stadtviertels in chinesischer Hand.
Um das italienische Erbe zu erhalten, haben sich Italiener und Chinesen auf eine Grenze geeinigt, ab der an Fassaden keine chinesischen Schriftzeichen angebracht werden. Heute findet man Little Italy noch in der Mulberry Street und in der Grand Street. Das Zentrum von Chinatown erstreckt sich entlang der Canal Street, aber auch die Mott Street ist eine durch chinesische Läden und Lokale stark geprägte und sehenswerte Straße.
