great tips.. I actually look forward to transitioning to and from DJ's who are willing to mix in and out of eachothers sets.. I think it's the way to go, music should not stop.. even if you need to play some ambient noise drones between sets.
I don't have an X1 or Traktor, but what I've learned to do is cue the song at the start of a beat, then whenever I hold down the cue button, it plays from the start of a beat, and I can immediately hear if it drifts out of time with whatever's playing. I let go the cue button, adjust the pitch & try again. Retriggering from the same beat each time with the cue button saves me trying to nudge the timing without a jog wheel. From there it's just practice. You could beatmatch to iTunes or something
not sure about plugging it into traktor but you can plug it into a 3rd channel on your mixer (if you have a 3 or more channel mixer) and play samples off of that. If you want to trigger samples from your iphone however, you can get a midi control app such as lemur or touchosc and have it control the sample section in traktor.
Very cool. Thanks for posting. Is traktor as friendly with hot swapping USB cables? I noticed you guys are using serato. I have had my PC freeze when the USB has been unplugged.
I'm not a Traktor user, but I've had other software freeze before when unplugging sound cards. I think the safest bet is to close the software first, or failing that, stop the music first.
Hey there, love your tutorials! can you tell me what kind of usb cabel do you use? is ist a normal one? and what is the special thing about the black thick areas at each end?
Very cool! I wonder if you guys could give some more tips like that when switching between djs using traktor, ordinary mixers (not special ones like Rane) and with lots of controllers and cables ;)
hey ean, i just recogniced that you used traktor with a pioner djm 850 (or something like this)... i just have a couple of questions: how did you map the effect control? and how can i use the effects of traktor AND the effects on the djm -> is this possible?
Excellent! I wondered if could cover something about transitioning in a club from serato dj to traktor pro 2(not scratch) and vice versa? Perhaps even to mix along side each other too where on dj is serato turntablist the other is ableton and traktor controller dj using apc40/x1
hi, but how do you switch between 2 dj's who use HID on traktor and CDJ's? The problem is that it takes to much time to get the settings right. I can do that but i always need an extra cd to make it work. Other suggestions?
But what if, for example, I want to transition from the usual 2cdjs to 2 vinyl turntables/controllers etc? Or from a controller to turntables? Maybe im not looking hard enough, but i cant seem to find a video turtorial on how that is done.
Ohhh, wow, never thought it was that simple. Thanks for answering my question! Sorry for my ignorance, I just had started researching about djing literally just last month. This really helped!
+dennisvergel36 the problem in that is that nowadays like 60-70 % of the Laptop DJ's cant even beatmatch because they dont need it in an digital setup. So my tip for new dj's: learn to beatmatch, it needs like 2-3 months but helps you alot, even in a digital setup because you train your ear. DJ's who cant beatmatch by ear are like racedrivers who cant drive stick.
I am baffled that putting a CD/USB stick/SD card into a CDJ wasn't mentioned. It's like the second easiest thing to do next to the Rane 62. If you're using turntables, having one CDJ would fit in as a 3rd source...or...if you're using CDJs, you could play a track during the switch. Careful though with using interfaces (like the SL1, 2, 3, 4), if you're not powered, removing the USB will disable the Thru signal.
Does Serato auto-detect the sound card or something? I'm not a Serato user, and to get music playing that quickly I'd have had to open the software's audio preferences beforehand.
How about a tutorial about two DJs playing one set? I'm trying this right now with a friend of mine and we could use some inspiration. Not just ping-pong, where exploring different posibilities... ;-) If you'll do that I'll promise to post a video answer!
most clubs use their own pioneer and rane hardware set up to their pa systems. Dont get all defensive about your portable dj midi thing, because it still is the club standard.
Where are the sound cards? If they're built into the DJ controllers, then of course, you can plug the main outputs of both controllers into different channels on a mixer. Just make sure you go into inputs labelled "Line" and not "Phono." Line is for CD players, laptops and basically anything with a headphone socket, while phono is just for record players. The reason the DJ's in this video don't do what you suggested is because they're sharing the same sound card (which is built into the mixer).
what id like to know is.... when someone else is djing with CDs... and i come along with my traktor... (not using cds, just a X1 using syncing) how on earth can you beatmatch to the cds to switch over? .... is the nuding on the X1 good enough?
I'm no DJ but I greatly appreciate dudes like this who share music knowledge. Great stuff!
DUDE..... that scratch transition was SICK
Ah Julia Gomes - Love Song 28! Jam! Big love from Cape Town, you're videos are great. Love the tip about using the noise generator on the djm 900.
great tips.. I actually look forward to transitioning to and from DJ's who are willing to mix in and out of eachothers sets.. I think it's the way to go, music should not stop.. even if you need to play some ambient noise drones between sets.
Who needs a cool transition when you've got a killer mustache like that?
When did Rick from The Walking dead become a DJ?
every video is great... keep em comin Ean and team!
Wauw, amazing transitions between several DJ's! Big thumbs up!
You can rock the club with any equipment u want. Club standard means the most common equipment you see installed when u show up to a club.
That dude's mustache went to a different level when he touched the turntable. Wow!
One of the bests tutorials from DJTT ;D
Nice video. I found it very informative and useful. Thank you.
ahhh that scratching transition is insane
Knowledge = Gained!!! Awesome video...
Thank you southern dj, It's refreshing that someone leave a helpful comment.
5:00 best dj transition ever lol
Old school trick is to get on the mic and emcee between switch overs. And I really like the Ipod app trick, Gonna have to try that.
this is for pro DJ because the beginer do to play and switch in clubs with others DJ
i love it is awsome!!
Im just like chilling here and listening the cool songs I hear in the background :D
I don't have an X1 or Traktor, but what I've learned to do is cue the song at the start of a beat, then whenever I hold down the cue button, it plays from the start of a beat, and I can immediately hear if it drifts out of time with whatever's playing. at the end of transition to "the roll" I like the vinyl record, one of my favorites for parties, Kenny Dope presents The Bucketheads "The Bomb!"
Nice! Thanks for that vid, I've been looking for tips like these for a loooooooong time :))
Great suggestions! good job Ean!
Track name is 'Love Song 28' from Jullian Gomes. It's the original mix!
@4.50 : that guy is ALWAYS there! haha! "what´s happening?"
Very cool. Thanks for posting. Is traktor as friendly with hot swapping USB cables? I noticed you guys are using serato. I have had my PC freeze when the USB has been unplugged.
Wow nice and helpfully video
#3 was badass.
some sick transition here
I'm not a Traktor user, but I've had other software freeze before when unplugging sound cards. I think the safest bet is to close the software first, or failing that, stop the music first.
Great tune there
You should make a part 2 for DJ's using the club standards, DJM 800/900 with CDJ 1000's/2000's and/or Serato to Traktor changes and vice versa.
hey could you do a vid on how and where to get the best quality songs to dj with ?
Excellent!
That dudes mustache is boss.
All I have to say.
wow nice transition between dj s
1:56 Sounds like this guy never uses Allen & Heath mixers
The Original is "The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats" from the eighties.
Have you tried calling the cops? A well place raid offers a break between sets and even the lights needed to swap more complex set ups.
The safety dance :D
Perfect for two DJ's who need to use the same mixer.
you should lose the Mustache buddy! hahaha sick vid!
What are the tunes used in the Video transitions. I like the donk that's on em!
the scratch solution is the most promising way to fuck up the set. the 8bar roll was quite interesting though.
and it's more common to switch all the equipment. soundcard, controllers and so on. not every dj is running the same stuff.
FML. I never work with DJs that can transition this fast.
Hey i tried to look for that red bull bpm dj app but couldn't find it. Is there another cool app like that?
Same what apps can play one track with pitch bend
hey ean, i just recogniced that you used traktor with a pioner djm 850 (or something like this)... i just have a couple of questions: how did you map the effect control? and how can i use the effects of traktor AND the effects on the djm -> is this possible?
Can u Plz make a vid talking about the new traktor 2.5 (i.e. ur thoughts, tips tricks, etc.)?
Tnx :)
Excellent! I wondered if could cover something about transitioning in a club from serato dj to traktor pro 2(not scratch) and vice versa? Perhaps even to mix along side each other too where on dj is serato turntablist the other is ableton and traktor controller dj using apc40/x1
Have u actually got an external audio interface, or do u use the build in soundcard of your mixer? (For timecode)
Where can I find tht blue USB cable u have connected from the macbook to the mixer?
hi, but how do you switch between 2 dj's who use HID on traktor and CDJ's? The problem is that it takes to much time to get the settings right. I can do that but i always need an extra cd to make it work. Other suggestions?
What cable is that plugged to the iphone and where can i get it?
So what's the easiest way to add zeros before the mik values in rekordbox for 2000 tracks? Can a batch be done somehow?
great vid
he beatmatched that like a boss
But what if, for example, I want to transition from the usual 2cdjs to 2 vinyl turntables/controllers etc? Or from a controller to turntables? Maybe im not looking hard enough, but i cant seem to find a video turtorial on how that is done.
dennisvergel36 Just beatmatching between those two devices? Match up your tempos and swap out the decks one at a time!
Ohhh, wow, never thought it was that simple. Thanks for answering my question! Sorry for my ignorance, I just had started researching about djing literally just last month. This really helped!
+dennisvergel36

Why do you prefer being a contollerist rather than a cdj/vinyl dj?

could you do a video for beginner dj's. something basic but also not to basic?
How about a tutorial about two DJs playing one set?
I'm trying this right now with a friend of mine and we could use some inspiration. Not just ping-pong, where exploring different posibilities... ;-)
If you'll do that I'll promise to post a video answer!
Everyone won't always agree with or how Dj's do what they do. I call them HATERS, anyway great job guys.
Noo, the mustache looks cool
Lols? Why not hook up a synthesizer? it's just the white noise wave form?
redo one of these things, its awesome!!!
Nice Jacket
J espinosa in the building!
song id for the track @ 6:02!?! soo awesome!!!
most clubs use their own pioneer and rane hardware set up to their pa systems. Dont get all defensive about your portable dj midi thing, because it still is the club standard.
Does this transition apply for the Pioneer 900 srt with serato ?
can you create the same echo effect (post) with the DJM-800? I can't seem to be able to it and don't think that there is a setting for it.
6:02 what's the name of the track just been dropped?
Jay Z & Kanye West - Otis
ean, i have a question. I have the "imachine" app on my iphone and i wanna use it as a live sampler. How can i connect it to Traktor?
Where are the sound cards? If they're built into the DJ controllers, then of course, you can plug the main outputs of both controllers into different channels on a mixer.
