There is Charleston the Historic Holy City packed with Tourist, & there is the Charleston Metro area, I grew up here and moved to NC for better job opportunities. Charleston in general is a wonderful City, but it has major issues, the lack of public transport is little to none. You can find if you are willing to live 45 minutes drive from the Downtown area affordable housing, but be prepared, for culture shock. The Low Country has many smaller towns near by, but if you like to eat out on occasion or Health Care is a concern, please do your research. The Historic City is pretty liberal, however drive 15 minutes out of the City and it’s very conservative. The other issue that you should research is housing insurance, the closer you are to the Beach, the more you will pay.
Bugs, Bugs, I grew up in Charleston and in the spring thru Autumn you will be dealing with bugs giant water roaches, nats, mosquitoes, flies and a lot of dangerous critters. It’s subtropical so don’t expect to many cool crisp days. I would say the winter months can be mild and every few years a pretty darn cold winter. Snow is rare, but if it does snow, be prepared as the entire city will shut down for a day or two. Hurricane season is the worst, because there are no really good interstates north, the local TV stations go crazy, never ever think that staying in a Category 4 storm is a good thing, you will get flooded and those tall beautiful pine trees snap like a twig. So yes in my opinion Charleston was wonderful to grow up in, I had no choice.
Best to visit in July and August and if can handle a couple of weeks in Charleston, then maybe you may want to move there, lastly do your homework on the State and it’s laws.
I would do my research on any place I was going to move to, in my opinion Charleston is a wonderful place to visit in October or November, but I would not move back there, I visit family often and I am glad to get back to the Piedmont area of NC. ☀️🦟😎🌀🍤

Hey, thanks for sharing your opinion! I agree that yes, the insurance is higher the closer you live to the beach. The climate is subtropical and generally warm, plus we do have a lack of public transportation.
A few things may have changed since you moved away. Conservatism is moving further and further out as time goes on. In regards to healthcare, they’re adding more healthcare facilities in Summerville and nearby areas. There’s a new Roper and MUSC there, as well as other medical facilities at Windmill Station, for example.
And you’re right, it’s important to do your research.
      Thanks for watching! 🌴

Some other points from long time resident - Charleston is a great place to retire with its low taxes. The lack of public transportation is becoming an issue - the roadways are in horrible condition and the state does little to improve them, many roads are now choked with traffic all day long. The state is also lacking in social and school services and does little to address it, not a good place to move to with special needs kids. Locals here are nice people but the southern charm being a bit diluted lately. The local county parks are great - take advantage of them!

I appreciate this video a lot! Helping my parents pick a retirement city haha. Would you say that the city is somewhat diverse and welcoming to immigrant folks? Also is there good food from other countries? Haha thank you

@IlyaG I'm unable to speak about crime as a real estate agent. It's against our code of ethics, and I would risk losing my license. If you have questions about crime, search local law enforcement websites. You can also speak to a law enforcement officer for those questions. Thanks for asking! - Kristyn

Would a 24 foot class B RV be able to get around easily? The architecture and nature from youtube videos is attracting me to this place and I am curious if I have to watch out with parking, low clearance, narrow streets and the like. Its about the width of a normal street lane and length of about 1 and half parking spot so takes up 2 spots or 1 with an over hang on grass or something.
I only see southern charm as a con when its being used for being two faced. If you arent actually polite and hospitable then do the northern thing and just say whats on your mind. lol. And the whole "bless your heart" just makes me think people are brushing off my opinion. But other than that, I do love talking to strangers and see this as a pro. I actually was on an amtrak train once and this couple from Alabama I think chatted me up, invited me to play bored games, shared their food. They genuinely were kind people and as far as I could tell not two faced. By that I don't mean different opinions than mine, I mean they said what they meant. It was a breathe of fresh air I had not gotten in a decade. Come to think of it, I met a couple pretty good people living all over on that train.

Hey, thanks for watching! I’m not too sure about class B RV’s. As far as I know, if you avoid downtown Charleston, you should be fine. If you take the major highways, you should be good. There are a few RV Parks throughout the Tri-county. Hope that helps!
